Time Course Of Vascular Function Changes Following An Acute Maximal Exercise Bout In Obese And Normal Weight Males, R. Lee Franco
Time Course Of Vascular Function Changes Following An Acute Maximal Exercise Bout In Obese And Normal Weight Males, R. Lee Franco
Theses and Dissertations
One of the earliest sub-clinical stages associated with atherosclerosis is endothelial dysfunction (ED), which has been shown to predict future cardiovascular events. Chronic exercise is thought to improve endothelium-dependent vasodilation; however, few studies have evaluated the effects of acute exercise on vascular function (VF). Moreover, studies evaluating ED following an exercise training program lack a standardized time frame in which to measure VF. Although most studies require subjects to abstain from exercise for 24 hours prior to any VF measure, no study to date has assessed VF longer than 24 hours after the cessation of exercise. Additionally, no studies have …

An Assessment Of Athletic Training Educators' Knowledge And Calibration Of Evidence-Based Diagnostic Concepts, Cailee Elizabeth Welch
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a phenomenon that has transitioned into various medical and allied health professions over the past several decades. The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge and calibration levels of evidence-based concepts in athletic training educators, as well as determine the effectiveness of an EBP single-day workshop. All educators attending the 2009 Athletic Training Educators' Conference (N=498) were solicited to participate in this study; 62 male (41.32 ± 8.92) and 79 female (36.08 ± 7.91) responded for a response rate of 28.3% (years of AT teaching experience = 9.81 ± 7.19). A twenty question multiple choice …

Impact Of Flash Animation In Learning Concepts Of Matter Among Elementary Students, Rhodora S. Santos
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study examines the instructional effect of flash animation on students' achievement in learning specific concepts of matter. The subjects used in this study were 5th-grade students of the researcher from Dan Ramirez Elementary. Each class or section of these students was randomly assigned as the control group (n = 20) and the experimental group (n =20). The subjects in the control group were exposed to traditional textbook reading while the subjects in the experimental group were exposed to flash animation. To measure the students' achievement from the concepts learned, a pre-test and a post test were both administered to …

Interrater Reliability Of Psychomotor Skill Assessment In Athletic Training, Jason Craddock
Interrater Reliability Of Psychomotor Skill Assessment In Athletic Training, Jason Craddock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Assessment in athletic training education is an evolutionary process that is determined by each individual Athletic Training Education Program. The autonomy authorized by national accreditation standards allows academic programs to determine the appropriate assessment practices that facilitate the meeting of student learning outcomes. Even with autonomy, formative and summative techniques are to be employed in both the didactic and clinical arenas of athletic training education programs. The major objective of athletic training education is to prepare students for entry-level practice in athletic training. The purpose of this study was to assess interrater reliability of athletic training faculty and approved clinical …

All Problems Are Not Equal: Implications For Problem-Based Learning, David H. Jonassen, Woei Hung
All Problems Are Not Equal: Implications For Problem-Based Learning, David H. Jonassen, Woei Hung
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional model that assumes the centrality of problems to learning. Research on PBL has focused on student learning, student roles, tutor roles, problem design, and technology use (Hung, Jonassen, & Liu, 2008), but little attention in the PBL literature has been paid to the nature of the problems that provide the focus for PBL. In this paper, we articulate a model for evaluating problem difficulty. Problem difficulty is define in terms of complexity, including breadth of knowledge, attainment level, intricacy of procedures, relational complexity, and problem structuredness including intransparency, heterogeneity of interpretations, interdisciplinarity, dynamicity, or …

Health-Culture And Social Justice: What Challenges Do They Present In Today’S Diverse And Globalized World?, Dr. Francis Musa Boakari Ph.D.
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
In matters of health and culture, For some, uncertainty is the motor of life; For others, anything only is because it is explainable; Not just any explanations, but those that are “data-based.” Still for some individuals, phenomena can be both certain and uncertain. For this third class, “believables” are found in-between what is and what can be. Subjectivity and context may be primordial in many things HUMAN, but Equity in opportunities and access to social goods and services, Dignity for all human beings under every circumstance, and Respect for self and others at all times, are even much more basic. …

Meeting The Challenges Of Integrative Learning: The Nexia Concept, Jane Love
Meeting The Challenges Of Integrative Learning: The Nexia Concept, Jane Love
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Integrative learning challenges faculty developers to facilitate integrative and connective experiences not only for students, but for faculty as well. For many faculty, curricular requirements impede connective teaching, and the widespread assumption that connectivity must be taught on the course level also limits their ability to enrich students’ learning through diverse perspectives and interactions. Nexia is an approach to this problem based on the concept of ad hoc connectivity, or small-scale, focused, short-term connections that allow students from two or more courses to interact around points of interest to both classes. By releasing connective teaching from expensive curricular constraints, the …
Caffeine Consumption Patterns And Beliefs Of College Freshmen, Gary Eugene Mcilvain
Caffeine Consumption Patterns And Beliefs Of College Freshmen, Gary Eugene Mcilvain
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Recently, energy drinks that contain high caffeine content without any age restrictions for purchase, have been introduced into the U.S. market. Caffeine consumption in the U.S. has increased dramatically, resulting in an increase in emergency room visits and calls to poison control centers. This increase in energy drink consumption, along with the traditional coffees, teas, and soft drinks that people consume regularly, have pushed caffeine consumption to new highs in a multi-billion dollar market.
The purpose of this study was to determine (1) the amount of caffeine consumed by a sample of freshmen students at Marshall University, (2) their beliefs …

The Effect Of High-Fidelity Manikin-Based Human Patient Simulation On Educational Outcomes In Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Courses, David L. Rodgers
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The use of high-fidelity manikin-based simulation has been studied in many healthcare education areas. However, the use of this education technology in the American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) course has not been well examined in the literature, despite this education program being one of the most widely taught standardized medical courses in the United States. This study examined high fidelity manikin-based simulation versus low-fidelity manikin-based simulation in the context of an actual ACLS course. Four outcomes were measured: learning outcomes as judged by an expert rater panel reviewing videos of subjects performing a simulated cardiac arrest event …

An Analysis Of Intuitive Eating Among College Students, Danielle Marie Vsetecka
An Analysis Of Intuitive Eating Among College Students, Danielle Marie Vsetecka
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In response to the world's increasing obesity rates, the use of traditional dieting and weight loss techniques is at an all time high. Although dieting rates have rapidly increased, the world's rising obesity rates show no sign of slowing and the effectiveness and effects of dieting have long been questioned. As an alternative to dieting and exercise, a non-dieting approach to weight regulation has emerged. Intuitive eating is one of its main tenants and is defined by allowing individuals to listen to internal body cues to determine hunger and fullness levels to meet nutritional and physical needs. However, few studies …

Health Attitudes, Knowledge And Literacy Of Primary Caregivers With Elementary School Children, Susan Stuib
Health Attitudes, Knowledge And Literacy Of Primary Caregivers With Elementary School Children, Susan Stuib
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has indicated that physical activity and healthy eating in elementary school children are the exception rather than the norm. Increased attention to the rising rates of childhood obesity, coupled with the recognition that changes in the school environment are critical to reducing this trend, has intensified the need to adopt better practices in school nutrition, physical activity and physical education. Apart from being physically active, children need to learn fundamental motor skills and develop health related physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition). Primary caregivers play an important part in developing and teaching …
