Exploring Kouzes And Posner’S Exemplary Leadership Practices Of Presidential Assistants In Higher Education, Sheila M. Strong
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the frequency in which presidential assistants in higher education institutions engaged in Kouzes and Posner’s five practices of exemplary leadership and in the managerial functions performed daily to meet the needs of the strategic goals and objectives of their institutions. There is limited research on the position of presidential assistants, which has existed for more than 40 years, and it is important to learn about this critical role and its impact at colleges and universities. Due to the complex challenges facing higher education institutions, presidents of colleges and universities need to …

Superintendent And School Board Relations: Impacting Achievement Through Collaborative Understanding Of Roles And Responsibilities, Greg Weiss, Nate Templeton, Ray Thompson, Joshua W. Tremont
School Leadership Review
One of the most important and influential persons in the governance structure of the local school district is the Superintendent of Schools. Functioning as the CEO of the district, the superintendent is responsible for a myriad of functions. Examples include daily operations inclusive of transportation and finance, curriculum and policy implementation, media relations, and empowering leaders. However, as Meador (2014) contends, a crucial role is that of board liaison. The Superintendent is responsible for keeping the board informed, making recommendations regarding district operations, and setting the board agenda. It is interesting to note that the superintendent does participate in board …

University Identity Change Through A Psychological Sense Of Community Framework: A Case Study Of The Elimar Model, Elizabeth F. Turesky, Mary Anne Peabody
International Journal of Leadership and Change
Leading through identity change is a highly emotive experience. When leadership is understood as an emotional community development process, the benefits for repurposing identity are greatly enhanced. This article introduces a change model that embeds emotional awareness throughout a four-phased process, adapting concepts originally presented in McMillan and Chavis’s (1986) psychological sense of community (PSOC) theory and Scott and Jaffee’s (1989) change curve model. In this case study, we focus on a four-year multi-campus northeastern United States public university as a model to investigate how individuals in leadership positions consider the role of affect in creating positive identity change to …

How Nonprofit Organization Founding Executive Leaders Assign Meaning To Their Experience With Succession Planning: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Tanya M. Eastman
Education Doctoral
Most nonprofit organizations face a succession of leadership during the life of the organization if the nonprofit organization is going exist past the founding executive leader. Nonprofit organization leaders acknowledge the importance of succession planning; yet, succession planning in most nonprofit organizations is nonexistent. This study utilized interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore the meaning that seven nonprofit organization founding executive leaders assign to their experience with succession planning. The following themes emerged: (a) the creation and sustainability of the organization were driven by things greater than them, (b) there was an interdependent relationship between the founder’s identity and the …

Using Teacher Prompts To Increase Leadership Skills In Preschool Children, Sarah Elizabeth West
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of the present study was to determine if teacher prompting could increase the frequency of leadership behaviors exhibited by preschool children during play and if teachers increased their level of prompting of leadership behaviors. Parten’s original 1933 framework defined the categories both directing and following; reciprocally directing or sharing leadership with another child; or directing the group in which the preschool children’s leadership behaviors were recorded. A review of the literature revealed prompts teachers could use to promote leadership skills in young children, which included modeling, helping others, completing tasks, praise, decision-making, and problem solving. …

It's A Dangerous World In There: Leadership Methods And Actions Of School Administrators During Emergency Situations And Times Of Crisis, James J. Drake
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Over the past twenty years, shootings and other violent incidents, acts of terrorism such as the attacks of September 11, 2001, and natural disaster events such as hurricanes or floods have occurred with increasing frequency. Situations like these pose significant challenges for school administrators when a normally-peaceful educational environment is quickly transformed by significant acts of aggression from within, or by external threats that impact the educational domain with little or no advance warning.
Contingency-based, situational leadership has proven to be effective when used in both educational and non-educational settings during normal, non-emergency periods. The purpose of this study is …

Developing A Resilience-Thinking Leadership Mindset Scale, Lloyd Duman
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this study was to develop a resilience-thinking leadership mindset construct and scale. Although literature exists on developing resilience and relational leadership theories, very little research and literature address a resilience-thinking mindset as a leadership strategy. This study represents an initial step in filling this gap. This research project was the initial phase toward the development of a resilience-thinking leadership mindset (RTLM) scale. I used a mixed-methods approach which was divided into three stages. Stage 1 involved the development of the scale items and assessment of both face and content validity to revise the original scale. Stage 2 …

Mexican-American Female Leaders In Public Education: A Regional Study Of The Effect Of Parenting Behaviors On Motivation And Leadership Style, Yvette Silva Ramos
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Women in positions of leadership in education are still underrepresented. Although the majority of classroom teachers continue to be women, in leadership, that is not the case. Specifically, the number of Mexican-American women in educational leadership positions lags behind the number of male counterparts. A qualitative case study was carried out to find how parenting style affected Mexican-American women’s leadership style, how Mexican-American heritage affected Mexican-American women’s self-perceived leadership style, and how parental influence affected Mexican-American women’s desire to lead. The study used a demographic data form, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, and a one-on-one interview with Mexican-American women in middle …

A Case Study On Leadership Identity Development Of Tutors In A Learning Center, Samantha L. Crandall
A Case Study On Leadership Identity Development Of Tutors In A Learning Center, Samantha L. Crandall
Dissertations
The effectiveness of a tutor training program is often only measured by student results rather than tutor outcomes (CRLA, 2016). Experiences in college, such as on-campus employment, greatly contribute to the development of students (Savoca, 2016). However, little research exists on the leadership development of tutors (NADE, 2016). Having a better understanding of how tutoring experiences, learning center environments, and leaders of tutor programs influence tutors’ leadership identity development offers the potential to help learning center professionals and other on-campus employers as they design programs to impact employees as future leaders. In this study, leadership identity development of tutors working …

"The apostle Paul’s advice to Timothy also provides a clear message for teachers in relation to living a spiritual life: “Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:16, NASB).6 For that purpose, I want to present two ways teachers can strengthen their walk with God so they can have confidence about their salvation and represent God effectively and efficiently to their students. This model is based on a principle found in spiritual-leadership literature. …

A Mixed Methods Study Of Collaborating Teacher Leadership In Professional Development Schools (Pdss), Nedd James Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Professional Development Schools (PDSs) provide teachers with multiple new opportunities for leadership. As teachers are encouraged to assume new roles outside of the classroom and beyond the school, it is important to examine the concept of teacher leadership in practice--specifically, how it is perceived by those most closely associated with it. This study identifies a shared understanding of teacher leadership from collaborating teachers, using a sequential explanatory mixed methods design in PDSs within a large, diverse southern New Jersey school district-university partnership. The two-phase study examines perceptions about teacher leaders through data collected from the Teacher Leadership Inventory (TLI) (Angelle …
