Participative Leadership: A Study Of Faculty And Administrators In A Lutheran Liberal Arts College, Tekeste Teclu

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Despite the numerous reference to and importance of the term "participative leadership" in various leadership and organizational theories and practices, the term itself remains ambiguous. While it is often used synonymously with terms such as collaborative, autonomy, influence, participative decision making, collegiality, and team, many people questioned whether these terms are truly synonymous. Moreover, because those who advocate this approach to leadership have many purposes in mind, the practice of participative leadership manifests itself in different forms. Hence, a need exists to clarify as to what practices are actually participative.

This study examines the meaning of the concept in theory …

Formal And Informal Educational Activities Of Transformational Nurse Leaders In Urban Hospitals, Sue Waltrip Young

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

Absence of educational programs designed to develop a specific leadership style has prompted educators in nursing administration to consider designing such programs. As the cost of hospital care escalates and the recruitment and retention of individuals into hospital nursing remains problematic, it is essential that methods be developed to address these issues. This study described the educational processes experienced by transformational nurse leaders employed in urban hospitals. By discovering the relative importance and amount of these activities for nurses identified as transformational leaders, data are provided for the design and testing of educational programs created to enhance a transformational leadership …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article presents a competency-based perspective on academic leadership, focusing on the role of department chairs in higher education. It critiques traditional trait, style, and functional approaches to leadership for their limitations in explaining how chairs contribute to departmental effectiveness. The study reports faculty perceptions of nineteen competencies necessary for effective leadership, which cluster into four categories: resource management, climate management, image management, and faculty development. Findings indicate that these competencies are generalizable across different academic units and strongly predict perceptions of leadership effectiveness. The discussion emphasizes the chair’s role as a mediator between faculty and administration, requiring skills that …

As an extracurricular activity. The Odyssey of the Mind program was offered to any student whose needs transcended the academic program, who needed more creativity, higher level thinking skills, and group interaction. The Torrance Test of Creativity, (1974) administered at the inception and conclusion of the four month program, indicated that students increased their creativity in originality and elaboration. Informal questionnaires completed by coaches and students reflected improvement in the affective domain. Students demonstrated …

All Master's Theses

The need to understand group processes in the classroom and to use them to develop more effective learning is growing among educators. The group and its dynamics comprise significant conditions for learning and work either for or against the individual's development. One of the most significant learning developmental characteristics that is readily influenced by group variables is the individual's ability to solve problems.
