A Course Of Study In History Of The Wausau Schools In Third, Fourth, Fifth And Sixth Grades, Gertrude Mcguine Aug 1932

A Course Of Study In History Of The Wausau Schools In Third, Fourth, Fifth And Sixth Grades, Gertrude Mcguine

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to assemble a workable course of study to be used in the teaching of social studies in the intermediate grades of the schools of Wausau. At present, only a limited amount of time may be given to the teaching of the social studies, exclusive of Geography, which is treated separately. Hence a carefully worked out plan is absolutely necessary if we are to obtain the results for which we hope.

The Home Room Of The Junior High School, Gertrude M. Dean Jul 1932

The Home Room Of The Junior High School, Gertrude M. Dean

Bachelors’ Theses

It is my purpose, in this paper, to discuss the unit of the junior high school, the Home Room.

I have consulted the leading authorities on secondary education, junior high schools, and home rooms, in order that I may quote from the material that they have written on this subject.

I have found that much has been published in the last five years concerning the importance of the home room. I have obtained my material from books written about junior high schools, from books which discuss extra-curricular activities, from magazines, and from pamphlets.

I shall present my subject by giving …

Correlation Of Art With The School Subjects Of The Upper Grades, Irene E. Cappon Jul 1932

Correlation Of Art With The School Subjects Of The Upper Grades, Irene E. Cappon

Bachelors’ Theses

Art pervades every phase of life. Beauty is universal in its appeal. All children seem to delight in form and color from infancy. There seems to be a natural impulse in all to express· thoughts and feelings creatively and constructively through pencils, crayons, paints, clay, wood, and other media. All children find pleasure in seeing their efforts take visible form.

Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Ethel M. Fox Jul 1932

Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Ethel M. Fox

Bachelors’ Theses

The fundamental origin of all students' activities not covered by the curriculum is really a physical urge, round even among primitive people; namely, the element or
play. Play activities are characteristic of primitive people, especially during the adolescent period. Ceremonials and mysteries, the basic features of the lodge, are derivations of this natural urge. It is the ritual idea that helps to keep alive many secret orders, and it is this same ritual idea that makes a dynamic appeal to adolescence. Successful leadership of youth requires an intimate knowledge or the basic appeal of adolescence.

Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker Jul 1932

Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker

Bachelors’ Theses

For a century arithmetic has been a popular subject in the elementary schools, and has consumed more time than any other subject. The war had an effect in reducing this time on arithmetic, largely due to the war-time emphasis on health, food production, back-of-the-line morale, and kindred subjects. More recently, school activities and playground work have come in for a reasonable share of the school time. The Twenty-ninth Yearbook recognizes the child as the center of interest, and the final criterion of all values being the effect any technique of teaching or any content of instruction has on the child. …

The Teaching Of Art In The Public Schools, Emma Dorothy Hamann Jun 1932

The Teaching Of Art In The Public Schools, Emma Dorothy Hamann

Bachelors’ Theses

We are in the midst of a vigorous and widespread reform movement in educational methods. The great aims of the new trends are creative self-expression and development of a tolerant adaptation to environment. In contrast to uniformity, standardization, and conformity to ideas of others, the twentieth century philosophy emphasizes confident affirmation or the importance of self, uniqueness and originality. Development of technique becomes a means toward an end, not an end in itself. The new education seeks to evoke and to build upon the urge to create. Hughes Mearns so fittingly stated, "It cannot be summoned. It can only be …

Is Formal Grammar Necessary In The High School?, Edward Ray Jun 1932

Is Formal Grammar Necessary In The High School?, Edward Ray

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study does not attempt to decide which is the better method of presenting grammar to the high school pupil; that is a question which would require much more extensive research to answer. We are interested primarily in determining and evaluating the success in college formal grammar of students who have had formal grammar in high school as compared with the success of those who have not had high school formal grammar. The study, therefore, is an attempt to show the differences existing in preparation for college formal grammar on the part of the students who have had high school …

Play In Education, Mary Gratiana Mcparland Jun 1932

Play In Education, Mary Gratiana Mcparland

Bachelors’ Theses

There is always occasion for stressing the necessity of more physical exercise and recreation, especially of the kind that makes for developing body and mind alike. In these pages the compiler endeavors to show that ’’the old order changeth,” because life continually grows more complex, and an ever-increasing number of people seek the cities in order to make their homes there. Methods must change with changing times, and pro¬ vision must be made for the healthful recreation of the masses.

Pre-Primer Reading, Meta Terlinden Jun 1932

Pre-Primer Reading, Meta Terlinden

Bachelors’ Theses

I shall attempt to show, in this thesis, the importance and· feasibility of pre-primer reading as an adequate foundation for primer reading. While pre-primer reading has taken an important place in the curriculum during recent years, there has been an ever-increasing interest taken as to its value, especially to children of low intelligence and to foreign children. I have obtained my references, to a large extent from William S. Gray and Laura Zirbes in their article on Primary Reading which appears in the Class Room Teacher Volume II, and also from articles on reading which are given in The Twenty-Fourth …

Little has been written on the subject of "The Value of Art Education in Life," because art education has been until recent years and still is to some extent considered one of the frills of education and has not been given the place of an essential.

Children's Reading, Mildred Mary Grosskopf May 1932

Children's Reading, Mildred Mary Grosskopf

Bachelors’ Theses

Probably the subject in the curriculum which has been most thoroughly studied and investigated by educators during the last few years is reading. There has been "a search for easy methods, philosophic methods, all sorts of methods by which a child may be inducted into its delights and mysteries. --- The subject has not only been covered, it has been immersed." (Cf. "A Guide to Lit. for Children" by W.T. Field. p. 60.)

The Value Of Play In Education, Helen F. Madden May 1932

The Value Of Play In Education, Helen F. Madden

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of this thesis is to show that play is a necessary part of a system of education,. It aims to show that the training of play is so fundamental, so necessary, and so educative that the child, as Froebel suggests, cannot grow to the full measure of his manhood without it, and that a deep seated love of play is not something that has to be opposed and suppressed, but rather encouraged and developed.
