Help Keep Hawks In Hawkeye Land, Steve Duecker Jan 1981

Help Keep Hawks In Hawkeye Land, Steve Duecker

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many people have watched a hawk soar on a warm spring day. As the hawk turns lazy circles in the sky, he is riding currents of air that push him up. Not much hunting is done from this soar. Hawks are equipped with strong feet and sharp claws called talons. These are for capturing and killing their food. Their hooked beak is used to tear the food up for swallowing. Hawks have ear openings and can hear fairly well. The eyes of the hawk are about eight times more powerful than a human's and are especially built to detect movement …

Heg81-143 Meat Storage Guidelines, H. Dwight Loveday, Sheri Horn Jan 1981

Heg81-143 Meat Storage Guidelines, H. Dwight Loveday, Sheri Horn

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Because meat is a highly perishable food item, extra care and attention are needed to ensure that a high quality, wholesome product is served.

Unwholesomeness and spoilage of meat are caused by bacteria and other microorganisms. This contamination generally occurs during cutting and processing. These bacteria require three conditions for growth:

low acidity (near neutral pH) level within the meat;

an available supply of water or other moisture, such as meat juices;

a warm temperature -- generally between 45° and 127°F.

Therefore, to prevent spoilage and the possibility of food borne illness, precautions must be taken to control these three …

G81-548 Organic Gardening In The Backyard (Revised June 1990), Dale T. Lindgren, Don Steinegger, Frederick P. Baxendale, John E. Watkins Jan 1981

G81-548 Organic Gardening In The Backyard (Revised June 1990), Dale T. Lindgren, Don Steinegger, Frederick P. Baxendale, John E. Watkins

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Successful organic gardening requires consideration of many factors, including resistant cultivars, crop rotation, sanitation, incorporation of organic matter, garden location, and insect and disease control.

Organic gardening is growing in popularity. Although this technique traditionally has been limited to backyard gardens, commercial organic farms now exist in Nebraska. The phrase "organically grown" generally refers to produce grown and processed without the use of synthetic organic chemicals in pesticides, fertilizers, preservatives, or flavorings. The main arguments for organic gardening are that food is less likely to contain potentially harmful chemicals and that fewer chemicals are released into the environment. Arguments against …

G81-538 Brooding And Rearing The Home Meat Flock, Earl W. Gleaves Jan 1981

G81-538 Brooding And Rearing The Home Meat Flock, Earl W. Gleaves

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses raising chickens for meat.

The objective of owning and raising a home flock should be to satisfy needs other than income production. For example, many people prefer fryer-type chickens of heavier weights to the lighter weight ranges available in many stores. Product freshness is the objective of some home flock owners; others are interested in the small flock in much the same way that some people are interested in a garden. A well-managed home flock can be a good source of fresh poultry meat. However, home flock producers should not plan to raise more birds than their …

G81-563 Grazing Management Of Irrigated Grass Pastures, James T. Nichols Jan 1981

G81-563 Grazing Management Of Irrigated Grass Pastures, James T. Nichols

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses factors and principles of plant growth that influence irrigated pasture production; suggests management practices that allow irrigated pastures to express their production potential; and suggests stocking rates for various levels of production and classes of cattle.

Grazing management has a major impact on the production potential from irrigated pasture. Proper management practices can maximize pasture production -- poor management ultimately results in unacceptable production levels.

Study To Determine The Effect Of Graduation Requirement Changes On Student Performance, Attitudes, And Retention In School, David R. Betzing Jan 1981

Study To Determine The Effect Of Graduation Requirement Changes On Student Performance, Attitudes, And Retention In School, David R. Betzing

All Graduate Projects

On July 31, 1979, the Yakima School Board of School District 7, Yakima, Washington, approved a graduation policy change increasing the total number of credits required from forty-eight to sixty-six. This change required that eighteen credits be transferred from grade nine of the junior high school setting. This study attempts to assess the impact of the change upon the performance and attitudes of ninth grade students. Indications are that students accepted the changes positively, felt they were working harder, and, in two schools showed a decrease in the failure rate. A look at the general achievement level of students and …

Creative Arts Activities For Elementary Students, Linda Rozella Linn

All Graduate Projects

A study has been made to select arts activities that will help enhance creativity. All children possess some amount of creative ability. Children, if encouraged, can develop this potential; if they are discouraged they tend to draw inward and thus their creativity is stifled. Ways for teachers to help increase and encourage creativity are discussed. Activities in the areas of art, music, and drama are presented in the project portion of this paper and will be used as a handbook for elementary teachers.

The Effects Of A Modified Language Experience Cloze Approach Upon The Comprehension Scores Of Seventh Grade Developmental Reading Students, Nancy Dykstra Russell Jan 1981

The Effects Of A Modified Language Experience Cloze Approach Upon The Comprehension Scores Of Seventh Grade Developmental Reading Students, Nancy Dykstra Russell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was conducted to detennine if a modified language experience cloze approach is an effective means of teaching reading to seventh grade students. Researchers and specialists in the field have indicated that the use of the cloze procedure is a valid technique for improving comprehension for two reasons. First, cloze forces the student to manipulate the semantic and syntactic cues of the language. Second, the cloze procedure material more closely approximates the reading process than the traditional questioning fonnat used with reading materials. The language experience approach was suggested for use in teaching reading since the approach eliminates the …

South West Aboriginal Studies Bibliography : With Annotations And Appendices, Anna Haebich, Lois Tilbrook

Research outputs pre 2011

The south west of Western Australia was the first region of the state to experience the impact of European settlement, when the Swan River Colony was founded in 1829. Yet the Aborigines of this unique area have remained largely obscured in its history for almost a full 150 years. This is ironical, as their counterparts of the Pilbara, Goldfields and Kimberleys, feature prominently in literature, and have captured the imagination of artists, writers and academic researchers alike.

There are several reasons for the neglect of the original inhabitants of the south west by observers of the day, and later by …

Space To Play: Games And Activities For Spatial Concepts In Primary School Children, Helen Mansfield (Ed.) Jan 1981

Space To Play: Games And Activities For Spatial Concepts In Primary School Children, Helen Mansfield (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Spatial concepts are amongst the most important mathematical concepts that young children develop. Ideas of shape, size, and position are part of the young child's mathematical world from the very beginning. The spatial environment of the child is always changing. Objects move around in his environment, just as he moves around and observes them from different positions. The relationships between objects and their relative shapes, sizes and positions are constantly changing.

In our teaching of the Space strand of the primary mathematics syllabus, we are trying to develop in children the understanding and skills associated with spatial relationships that are …

Teaching Children With Special Needs: A Western Australian Perspective, Kevin Casey Jan 1981

Teaching Children With Special Needs: A Western Australian Perspective, Kevin Casey

Research outputs pre 2011

The education of children with special needs in Australia gained considerable impetus from the report of the Interim Committee for the Australian Schools Commission under the chairmanship of Professor Karmel when, in 1973, it made strong recommendations for a substantial increase in the government expenditure on special education. It highlighted inadequacies in the existing services in special education both in terms of facilities and manpower and suggested greater responsibilities for the education of handicapped children be taken by the State Education Departments. The upgrading of qualifications of teachers in Special Education and the necessary establishment of suitable courses in Australian …

Overtly-Reinforced Cloze Procedure Versus Conventional Instruction In The Teaching Of Selected Science Facts In The Fourth Grade, Mary Janis Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

"They just can't read the material" is an expression which can be heard in almost any teacher's lounge. Often it is a science, social studies, or mathematics teacher who is complaining about the inability of students to comprehend what is read in textbooks. Media coverage suggests that children are experiencing difficulty with all the basic skills (Howe, 1979).
