A Study Of Inhibition Development In Young Children, Ai Thi Thanh Hoang Sep 2024

A Study Of Inhibition Development In Young Children, Ai Thi Thanh Hoang

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

Child inhibition can be learned consciously and unconsciously, and it is highly dependent on the quality of interaction with adults (i.e., parents and teachers). However, little is known about the impact of teachers’ emotional management and sensitivity on the development of inhibition skills among students in early childhood classrooms. This dissertation takes an integrative approach to explore whether teacher-child relationship and teacher self-efficacy have a bidirectional connection and how they work to impact child inhibition, directly and indirectly. The present research utilizes the large nationally represented Early Childhood Longitudinal Study 2010-2011, sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics in …

Autoethnographic Experiences Of A Disabled Teacher In The Public School Setting, Deanne Motz Sep 2024

Autoethnographic Experiences Of A Disabled Teacher In The Public School Setting, Deanne Motz

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This autoethnography considers accommodations and modifications through four different genres: journal entries, biography, fiction, and autobiography. It discusses autoethnography, disability and health studies, and the healing power of storytelling. It finds that those with disabilities thrive with positive self-talk and personality traits, compassionate mentors, and a supportive community. In addition, although some accommodations are universal, many are dependent on individual needs.

Sweating The Small Stuff: Exploring Consequence Assignments And Academic Outcomes In A No-Excuses Charter Network, John G. Stevens Sep 2024

Sweating The Small Stuff: Exploring Consequence Assignments And Academic Outcomes In A No-Excuses Charter Network, John G. Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

Schools utilize a range of consequences to maintain order and safety. Some employ zero-tolerance policies accompanied by exclusionary tactics like suspension (Martinez, 2009; Muschert et al., 2014). Suspensions are criticized for their disproportionate assignment to students who are Black, male, assigned an IEP, and receiving lunch assistance (Cholewa et al., 2018; Skiba et al., 2002), as well as their deleterious associations with academic achievement (Chu & Ready, 2018; Morris & Perry, 2014; Noltemeyer et al., 2015). Charter schools espousing a no-excuses philosophy often adopt a “Sweat-the-Small-Stuff” (STSS) approach focused on correcting minor (mis)behaviors to prevent more egregious ones (Whitman, 2008). …

Perceptions Of Low-Income Parents On Kindergarten Readiness: A Qualitative Study, Farrah Woodberry Owens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a significant amount of research documenting the importance of school readiness and its implication for life-long consequences (Jarrett & Coba-Rodriguez, 2017, 2018; Kang et al., 2017; Malsch et al., 2011). Parents play a critical role in supporting the acquisition of all skills needed to prepare children for school readiness. Readiness refers to being prepared with the necessary skills to access learning (Saracho, 2023). The purpose of this study is to explore the practices and perceptions of low-income parents on kindergarten readiness skills in the Hollywood School District (HSD) as measured by the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA). Students in …

Attitudes When Taking Assessments Using Proctoring Software And Academic Honesty Between Students With Disabilities And General Population Students, Erin Carter

Education Doctorate Dissertations

This quantitative study explores student attitudes and academic dishonesty in online assessments using proctoring software, focusing on differences between students with disabilities and general population students, and ensuring academic integrity in online assessments. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), requires any college or university that receives federal funds to provide accommodations for students who disclose they have a disability, with the stipulation the accommodations or services do not fundamentally alter the nature of the course or program of study. The research is rooted in Kohlberg’s moral reasoning and development stages and …

Play In The Undercommons: The Transformative Power Of Fugitive Practice In A Multiracial, International Teacher Inquiry Collective, Kushya Sugarman Sep 2024

Play In The Undercommons: The Transformative Power Of Fugitive Practice In A Multiracial, International Teacher Inquiry Collective, Kushya Sugarman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Though scholars have begun to position youth’s fugitivity, refusal, and disengagement as logical responses to hostile environments, and as part of a larger legacy of Black speculative planning and action, most teachers do not. Elementary teachers, especially in urban contexts, notoriously struggle with “classroom management” and teachers across contexts cite behavior challenges, such as “disruptive” behavior, as the number one challenge facing our schools. In fact, up to 50% of novice teachers leave the profession in the first five years due to students’ behaviors. This dissertation interrogates the common trope of the wayward student who must be controlled. I consider …

Differences Are Not Deficits: Women Introverting While Black Through The Ascent To Executive Leadership In Higher Education, Jeri A. Bingham Sep 2024

Differences Are Not Deficits: Women Introverting While Black Through The Ascent To Executive Leadership In Higher Education, Jeri A. Bingham

Dissertations

Diversity of personality type in the workplace can lead to improved morale and productivity when organizations acknowledge and support the attributes and differences of employee behaviors and characteristics. Black women executives identifying as introverted who lead with their authentic personas and intersected marginalized identities, benefit employers, employees, students, and the institution’s brand and bottom line. Introversion and extroversion, ways to describe diversity of personality type, and each having different connotations in office culture, are relevant to this exploration as literature suggests that the population of both personality types is almost evenly distributed. The implications of judgement and the association to …

Were The “Best Made Better”? A Content Analysis Of South Carolina 4-H Programming, Lauren B. Hood, Christopher J. Eck, K Dale Layfield, Joseph L. Donaldson

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Since 1902, 4-H Youth Development programs have been implemented by Cooperative Extension agents or educators for teaching, influencing, and leading youth to new life skills that can positively impact their futures. The 4-H motto is “learn by doing” and is practiced with a hands-on learning approach. Unfortunately, during the COVID-19 pandemic, 4-H programs and clubs around the nation were confined to home or distance learning and no group interaction, limiting this hands-on learning approach. This study analyzes how 4-H, specifically in South Carolina, was implemented without meeting in person and how it affected retention rates during the pandemic. Analysis of …

A Chance To See Me: Exploring Black Males’ Perspectives On Public Education Regarding The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Renee Duffaut Sep 2024

A Chance To See Me: Exploring Black Males’ Perspectives On Public Education Regarding The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Renee Duffaut

JWU Dissertations & Theses

In the United States, race undeniably remains at the heart of the educational experiences of Black males. For decades, researchers have studied how schools systemically “push out” and reroute Black males to prison at a disproportionate rate by enforcing inequitable discipline policies and practices (Annamma et al., 2019; Leung-Gagné, 2022; Scott et al., 2017; Skiba et al., 2011). Black children are disciplined for minor infractions at higher rates than any other ethnic group which increases their likelihood of becoming caught up in the School-to-Prison Pipeline (Amemiya et al., 2020). Forty-two percent of youths in juvenile justice placement are Black, even …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to understand the factors influencing the leadership development of Hispanic/Latino principals in elementary public schools in Texas. As the Hispanic/Latino population of students rises, understanding the underrepresented Hispanic/Latino principals’ experiences from adolescence to middle adulthood is critical to unveiling factors that influence their leadership identity development. Using a life story narrative approach to examine leadership development across the lifespan, the study provided themes regarding the pivotal environmental, contextual, personal, and intrapersonal factors influencing the principals’ leadership development. The thematic analysis of the life stories uncovered three prominent themes associated with the most influential factors in leadership development: …

Integrating Authentication Schemes In Augmented And Virtual Reality Classrooms, Naheem Noah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) technologies are revolutionizing educational experiences, but their widespread adoption hinges on addressing critical security and usability challenges, particularly in the domain of user authentication. This research presents an investigation into the security landscape of AR/VR and explores a graphical authentication scheme called “Things” that enhances both security and usability in immersive learning environments. Through a systematic evaluation of popular AR/VR devices and applications, potential vulnerabilities and limitations were identified, such as high usage of pin/passwords which are susceptible to shoulder-surfing attacks, lack of multi-factor authentication, and unclear data-sharing practices. A review of existing knowledge-based …
