Differences In Special Education Teachers' Applied Behavior Analysis Scores: A Causal-Comparative Study, Delilah Mae Fernandez
Differences In Special Education Teachers' Applied Behavior Analysis Scores: A Causal-Comparative Study, Delilah Mae Fernandez
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative, causal-comparative study aimed to determine if there was a difference in applied behavior analysis scores from the applied behavior analysis test between traditional and non-traditionally certified teachers and veteran and new teachers. This research also aimed to identify if there was an interaction effect between experience level and type of certification when considering understanding of applied behavior analysis. This study is important as the findings contribute to the education system within the central Texas area as it uncovered the level of knowledge specific special education teachers in self-contained classrooms have and determined if educators are implementing the best …

Teacher Observations On The Success Of Hard-Of-Hearing Students In The Middle School Mathematics Classroom: A Case Study, Hannah Abbott Mcpherson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this case study was to describe how deficits in foundational language among hard-of-hearing students influence mathematics instruction for general education middle school classroom teachers working to educate this student population in the South. The theory guiding this study was Paivio’s theory on dual coding, as it supports learning the necessary concepts needed to perform successfully in mathematics. The central research question for this study was: What are the experiences of middle school mathematics teachers working with hard-of-hearing students? Methodology defined as a descriptive case study included individual interviews, a focus group, and journal prompts to collect data …
General Education Teachers' Perceptions Of Low-Intensity Behavior Management Strategies: A Phenomenological Study, Jessica D'Orazio
General Education Teachers' Perceptions Of Low-Intensity Behavior Management Strategies: A Phenomenological Study, Jessica D'Orazio
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore general education teachers’ successes and challenges implementing low-intensity behavior management strategies while teaching in a public school setting. Guiding this study was Bernard Weiner’s attribution theory, as the theory relates to teachers’ perceptions and use of behavior management strategies. The central research question was, “How do general education teachers describe their experiences implementing low-intensity behavior management strategies?” Fifteen teachers participated in the study, and all teacher participants previously received training in low-intensity behavior management strategies from the district Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Data collection involved three approaches: open-ended surveys, individual interviews, …
Measuring Technical Super-Efficiency Of Christian Faith-Based International Humanitarian Organizations, Barbara G. Price
Measuring Technical Super-Efficiency Of Christian Faith-Based International Humanitarian Organizations, Barbara G. Price
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
COVID-19 left a wake of destruction upon its descension, pervasion, and diffusion across the continents. Not only did this happen at individual, household, and corporate levels, but also the nonprofit world. Christian ministries, faith-based organizations, and faith-based charities are among some of the largest international relief and development agencies that are on the front lines of humanitarian and disaster relief efforts (MinistryWatch & Smith, 2023). Understanding the effects of COVID-19 or phenomena with similar magnitudes on faith-based organizations is critical to understanding the impact at the level of their international humanitarian development and relief programs. There is a need for …

Critical Conversations: Supporting Elementary Teachers In Instructing With Inclusive Children’S Literature, Susan Flis
Educational Studies Dissertations
ABSTRACT
The present study investigated how an instructional coach supported elementary classroom teachers in critically analyzing interactive read-aloud texts and facilitating critical conversations with students about inclusive picture books. Extant literature highlights the importance of the representation of all identities in children’s literature. This qualitative collaborative inquiry research study was framed by critical literacy theory. Six classroom teachers in grades kindergarten through 5th grade participated in this research. Children’s books are a valuable instructional tool for a variety of reasons, but educators must think critically when choosing books for their classrooms. Many teachers are unaware of the effect that …
In Kinship With The World: Developing A Novel Instrument To Assess Human-Nature Relational Values, Kimberly Post
In Kinship With The World: Developing A Novel Instrument To Assess Human-Nature Relational Values, Kimberly Post
Educational Studies Dissertations
In the nascent field of human-nature relational values, there is a growing body of literature suggesting their transformative potential in sustainability education. The ability to analytically distinguish relational values from other valuations can both inform pedagogical approaches and help to identify how people understand and value their relationships with the living and more-than-living biospheric inhabitants. To address this need, an overarching question was posited: Can a relational values-specific assessment instrument be designed and validated for use in post-secondary sustainability education? Through a survey of the literature, thematic analysis of validated human-nature connection instruments, and multi-method qualitative research, a pilot instrument …
Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Determine Urban And Suburban Homeowners' Fertilizer Management Practices, Natalie Levy, Michael Burnett
Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Determine Urban And Suburban Homeowners' Fertilizer Management Practices, Natalie Levy, Michael Burnett
Journal of Extension
A fundamental strategy for reducing nutrient runoff from lawns and landscapes is the implementation of recommended fertilizer management practices (FMPs). Our study evaluated Louisiana urban and suburban homeowners’ current FMPs using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constructs. We measured homeowners’ attitude, perceived norm, perceived control, intention, and past behavior regarding 12 salient FMPs. The results of our study identified which recommended FMPs to adopt and which non-recommended practices to change. To effectively modify homeowners’ FMPs, we recommended designing tailored Extension educational programming to target the TPB constructs most strongly related to homeowners’ decision to perform these practices.

Adoption Of Podcasting As A Tool For Extension Educators, Samantha Bennett, David Martin, Jason Sawyer, Soren Rodning, Don Mulvaney
Journal of Extension
The current study fills a gap in the current literature by measuring current CES personnel and stakeholders’ attitudes toward the use of Podcasts as a tool for information dissemination. By identifying perceived barriers to podcasts by CES personnel and how receptive CES stakeholders are to CES-based podcasts, this study helps to identify important barriers to the development of podcasts, as well as how such podcasts can be best positioned to fulfill the needs and expectations of CES stakeholders. Podcasts have the potential to play a key role as an avenue for information exchange between the CES and its stakeholders. Two …

Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
In conjunction with the USU STEAM EXPO, USU Math and Stats faculty, graduate students, collaborators, and teachers in rural Utah districts came together for a cultural-exchange event. In collaboration with Jessica Benally (UC Berkeley) and Sindura Kularajan (USU), we facilitated a two day workshop for educators as part of this event. The purpose of the workshop was to address the need for teacher supports in rural districts of Utah (Bundock, 2023), respond to Coles et al. (2024) calls to make "gestures" towards socio-ecological practices in mathematics education, and promote epistemic pluralism-multiple ways of knowing and doing mathematics. The professional development …

Human Capital At Home: Evidence From A Randomized Evaluation In The Philippines, Noam Angrist, Sarah Kabay, Dean S. Karlan, Lincoln Lau, Kevin M. Wong
Education Division Scholarship
Children spend most of their time at home in their early years, yet efforts to promote human capital at home in many low- and middle-income settings remain limited. We conduct a randomized controlled trial to evaluate an intervention which encourages parents and caregivers to foster human capital accumulation among their children between ages 3 and 5, with a focus on math and phonics skills. Children gain 0.52 and 0.51 standard deviations relative to the control group on math and phonics tests, respectively (p<0.001). A year later effects persist, but math gains dissipate to 0.15 (p=0.06) and phonics to 0.13 (p=0.12). Effects appear to be mediated largely through instructional support by parents and not other parent investment mechanisms, such as more positive parent-child interactions or additional time spent on education at home beyond the intervention. Our results show that parents can be effective conduits of educational instruction even in low-resource settings.

Coyote Play: A Critical Inquiry Of Power At A Nature-Based Preschool, Timothy Mckenzie
Coyote Play: A Critical Inquiry Of Power At A Nature-Based Preschool, Timothy Mckenzie
All ETDs from UAB
The distribution of power in the educational institution exists as a hierarchy from governing bodies to the masses. This causes children within the institution to align themselves with the institution rather than the institution meeting the needs of the children it serves. The purpose of this study is to examine how children engage with power at a nature-based preschool. The researcher used data from field observations and programmatic resources to analyze the power enacted by children. The researcher found that the children enact power through structures, to define place, care for themselves, and care for others. The implications of this …
Comparing Participant Recruitment Methods For Statewide Needs Assessment Surveys, Amy Harder, Diane D. Craig, Karlibeth Leitheiser
Comparing Participant Recruitment Methods For Statewide Needs Assessment Surveys, Amy Harder, Diane D. Craig, Karlibeth Leitheiser
Journal of Extension
Contracting with a paid survey vendor can be costly; are free and low-cost survey recruitment methods a sound option for Extension? The purpose of our study was to assess the feasibility of using free or low-cost recruitment methods as a substitute for contracting with a paid survey vendor when conducting a statewide needs assessment. The demographic characteristics and responses from paid survey panelists were compared with the same data from participants recruited via Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Observed differences suggest that Extension professionals should carefully consider whose perspectives are needed for a needs assessment and make survey recruitment decisions accordingly.

Early Childhood Educators’ Perceptions Of How Leadership Relates To Their Workplace Well-Being, Joanna Skourletos
Dissertations
The early childhood workforce faces many unique challenges which have exacerbated educators’ already high levels of workplace stress and turnover. Despite such system-wide issues, there are many thriving early childhood programs that cultivate environments that promote positive professional well-being for early childhood educators. This mixed methods sequential explanatory study examined the experiences and elevated the voices of early childhood educators to explore their perceptions of how their administrators relate to their workplace well-being. Using an online survey and semi-structured interviews, findings indicated that teachers’ perceptions of administrators’ leadership style, trust level and congruence to ideal relate to educators’ workplace stress …
Jingle’ And ‘Jangle’ Fallacies
Jingle’ And ‘Jangle’ Fallacies
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Systematic approaches (theories and applications) from early founders of the social sciences and education, even in their early history, paid meticulous attention to the many pitfalls encountered when neglecting to clarify and specify what one means when using words which imply “constructs” and their purported cause and effect dynamics. ‘Jingle’ and ‘jangle’ fallacies, when finally spotted and addressed, turn out to be the naiveté of a person not understanding the terms/words they were using. They failed to notice, according to Thorndike and Woodworth that words are (1901), “… mythological, not real entities. The words do not mean any existing fact …

An Ecopsychological Reading Of Susan Fennimore Cooper’S “Rural Hours”
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Ecopsychology explores the relationships between the mind (psyche) and the surrounding environment. As Andy Fisher puts it in Radical Ecopsychology (2013), ecopsychology, “would approach the psyche in relation to its earthly or natural home, its native abode” as well as the “the basic shifts in our patterns of identity and relationship that occur when we include our connection to the web of life around us as essential to human well-being.” Fisher considers ecopsychology as a project that paves the ground for changing the role of humans from exploiters to members in the biotic community. If eco or ‘oikos’ refers to …
