Term Structure Of Interest Rates In The Singapore Asian Dollar Market, Tom K. Y. Lee, Yiu Kuen Tse Apr 1991

Term Structure Of Interest Rates In The Singapore Asian Dollar Market, Tom K. Y. Lee, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper investigates empirically the term structure of interest rates in the Singapore Asian Dollar Market. We consider extended versions of the ARCH-M model of Engle, Lilien, and Robins (1987). The extended models permit autocorrelation, skewness and leptokurtosis in the residuals. The robustness of the empirical tests with respect to alternative specifications of the ARCH process is examined. It turns out that there is significant time-varying term premium, and this conclusion is independent of the hypothesized ARCH model.

Effects Of A Reemployment Bonus Under Differing Benefit Entitlements, Or, Why The Illinois Experiment Worked, Carl Davidson, Stephen A. Woodbury Mar 1991

Effects Of A Reemployment Bonus Under Differing Benefit Entitlements, Or, Why The Illinois Experiment Worked, Carl Davidson, Stephen A. Woodbury

Conference Papers

Fifty-eight percent of the workers enrolled in the Illinois Claimant Bonus experiment were eligible for 38 weeks of Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits--26 weeks of state-regular benefits plus 12 weeks of Federal Supplemental Compensation (FSC). The other 42 percent were eligible for only 26 weeks of state-regular UI benefits. We find that the Claimant Bonus treatment--an offer of $500 in cash for rapid reemployment--reduced the duration of insured unemployment by about 1.8 weeks for workers who were eligible for 38 weeks of UI benefits, but by only about 0.75 week for the workers who were eligible for 26 weeks of UI. …

Public Opinion In Poland's Transition To Market Democracy, David S. Mason Mar 1991

Public Opinion In Poland's Transition To Market Democracy, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Public opinion research has changed dramatically in the last ten years in Poland, in terms of its methodology, scope, and role in political change. During the "first" Solidarity era (1980-81), the genie of public opinion was let out of the bottle, and even martial law could not entirely put it back. Public opinion polling in the 1980s became more sophisticated and more common, and began to tackle increasingly sensitive political issues. Public opinion came to play a role in the political process, and to give the Polish population a sense of its own purpose and values. It also revealed the …

Perestroĭka, Social Justice And Public Opinion, David S. Mason, Svetlana Sydorenko Mar 1991

Perestroĭka, Social Justice And Public Opinion, David S. Mason, Svetlana Sydorenko

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In its struggle to reform, the Soviet leadership faces a major dilemma in attempting to reconcile economic efficiency with a commitment to social justice. The economic reforms of perestroika call for a greater role for market mechanisms and even private enterprise. However, these policies often run up against a public opinion that is staunchly egalitarian. Public attitudes that are, on the one hand, critical of elite privileges and distrustful of the state distributive apparatus are also, on the other hand, supponive of centralized distribution of resources, limitations on high incomes, and restrictions on private propeny.

The issue of social justice …

Strictly Fair Allocations In Large Exchange Economies, Lin Zhou Mar 1991

Strictly Fair Allocations In Large Exchange Economies, Lin Zhou

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we introduce the concept of a strictly fair allocation and investigate the set of strictly fair allocations in large exchange economies. We prove that when agents’ utility functions are differentiable, the set of strictly fair allocations coincides with the set of equal-income Walrasian equilibria. This is shown using both the “limit theorem” approach the “limit economy” approach. We also extend the analysis to economies that have both atoms and an atomless sector. These results substantially improve upon the existing characterizations of equal-income Walrasian equilibria in terms of both economic efficiency and economic equity.

Dual Distribution In Franchising, Nancy Gallini, Nancy A. Lutz Mar 1991

Dual Distribution In Franchising, Nancy Gallini, Nancy A. Lutz

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we offer an explanation for the practice of dual distribution. the simultaneous use of franchises and company owned outlets for distributing new products. Our explanation rests on the observation that franchisors often acquire private information, not available to franchisees, on product demand through marketing efforts. Under this assumption of asymmetric information, we show that a franchisor will use both direct ownership as well as the franchise contract to convey information about a new product. This explanation for dual distribution relies neither on capital market imperfections nor upon location-specific factors, in contrast to alternative explanations advanced in the …

Foreign Exchange Policy And Management, Olukole A. R.

The interdependence of countries in terms of trade has grown so much that, perhaps, "no country can lay absolute claim on self-sufficiency in its resource requirements or lay absolute claim on a perfectly balanced supply of resource" . By extension, since resources are limited and scarce, the need for policy formulation and management of the resources be comes inevitable. Accordingly, Part 1 of this paper highlights the foreign currency management tools. Part II discusses the policies in external economies. Part Ill deals in details with the foreign currency policy in Nigeria while Part IV gives the conclusion.
