Bringing Japanese Manufacturing Systems To America: The Feasibility Of Implementing Just-In-Time Production In The United States, Magda Lacharite May 1991

Bringing Japanese Manufacturing Systems To America: The Feasibility Of Implementing Just-In-Time Production In The United States, Magda Lacharite

Senior Scholar Papers

This paper addresses the feasibility of implementing Japanese manufacturing systems in the United States. The recent success of Japanese transplant companies suggests that Just-In-Time (JIT) production is possible within America's industrial environment. Once American workers receive proper training, they have little difficulty participating in rapid setup procedures and utilizing the kanban system. Japanese transplants are gradually developing Japanese-style relationships with their American supplier companies by initiating long-term, mutually beneficial agreements. They are also finding ways to cope with America's problem of distance, which is steadily decreasing as an obstacle to JIT delivery. American companies, however, encounter Significant problems in trying …

The Spurious Effect Of Unit Roots On Exogeneity Tests In Vector Autoregressions: An Analytical Study, Hiro Y. Toda, Peter C.B. Phillips May 1991

The Spurious Effect Of Unit Roots On Exogeneity Tests In Vector Autoregressions: An Analytical Study, Hiro Y. Toda, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper analyzes whether inclusion of a statistically independent random walk in a vector autoregression can result in spurious inference. The problem was raised originally by Ohanian (1988). In a Monte Carlo simulation based on the VAR’s estimated by Sims (1980b, 1982), Ohanian found that block exogeneity of the genuine variables with respect to an artificially generated random walk variable was rejected too often. In the present paper we attempt a full analytical study of this problem. It can be shown that if the genuine variables are nonstationary, the Wald statistic for testing the block exogeneity hypothesis does not have …

Testing The Null Hypothesis Of Stationarity Against The Alternative Of A Unit Root: How Sure Are We That Economic Time Series Have A Unit Root?, Denis Kwiatkowski, Peter C.B. Phillips, Peter Schmidt May 1991

Testing The Null Hypothesis Of Stationarity Against The Alternative Of A Unit Root: How Sure Are We That Economic Time Series Have A Unit Root?, Denis Kwiatkowski, Peter C.B. Phillips, Peter Schmidt

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The standard conclusion that is drawn from this empirical evidence is that many or most aggregate economic time series contain a unit root. However, it is important to note that in this empirical work the unit root is set up as the null hypothesis testing is carried out ensures that the null hypothesis is accepted unless there is strong evidence against it. Therefore, an alternative explanation for the common failure to reject a unit root is simply that most economic time series are not very informative about whether or not there is a unit root; or, equivalently, that standard unit …

Time Series Modelling With A Bayesian Frame Of Reference: I. Concepts And Illustrations, Peter C.B. Phillips, Werner Ploberger May 1991

Time Series Modelling With A Bayesian Frame Of Reference: I. Concepts And Illustrations, Peter C.B. Phillips, Werner Ploberger

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper offers a general approach to time series modeling that attempts to reconcile classical and methods. The central idea put forward to achieve reconciliation is that the Bayesian approach relies implicitly a frame of reference for the data generating mechanism that is quite different from the one that is employed in the classical approach. Differences in inferences from the two approaches are therefore to be expected unless the altered frame reference is taken into account. We show that the new frame of reference in Bayesian inference is a consequence of a change of measure that arises naturally in the …

Vector Autoregression And Causality, Hiro Y. Toda, Peter C.B. Phillips May 1991

Vector Autoregression And Causality, Hiro Y. Toda, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops a complete limit theory for Wald tests of Granger causality in levels vector autoregression (VAR’s) and Johansen-type error correction models (ECM’s) allowing for the presence of stochastic trends and cointegration. Earlier work by Sims, Stock and Watson (1990) on trivariate VAR systems is extended to the general case, thereby formally characterizing the circumstances when these Wald tests are asymptotically valid as chi-square criteria. Our results for inference from unrestricted levels VAR are not encouraging.

The Soviet Union And The Gatt: An Impossible Combination?, Gregory L. Waddoups May 1991

The Soviet Union And The Gatt: An Impossible Combination?, Gregory L. Waddoups

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In considering the relationship between the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs and any given state, one must examine not only the economic reasons for acceptance and participation, but also the political. This is especially true when dealing with the Soviet Union. In researching this topic, I have found that economics and politics are deeply interwoven into the fabric of international dealings with the Soviets on any level and at any given time.

Soviet participation in the GATT goes back to the very beginnings of the Bretton Woods institutions and of the International Trade Organization. While this participation runs contrary …

A Simulation Of The Economic Effects Of Alternative Soil Types And Nitrogen Sources On Nitrate Leaching On Irrigated Agriculture In Utah, Gilbert D. Miller May 1991

A Simulation Of The Economic Effects Of Alternative Soil Types And Nitrogen Sources On Nitrate Leaching On Irrigated Agriculture In Utah, Gilbert D. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The economic impact of reducing the amount of nitrate leached out of the root zone under irrigation in the arid West was examined. A general introduction into the nature of the problem and a review of the literature was provided in chapter I. In chapter ll the economic incentives of irrigation management were evaluated under the assumptions of both profit-maximizing and utility-maximizing (in reducing cost and effort expended in irrigation) decision-making criteria. The results indicate that there is a coincidence of interests of the farmer and the environment. Both behaviors result in less nitrate leaching than less profitable or less …

Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill May 1991

Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the nature, composition and determinants of Singapore's early stage technology exports. The pattern of these exports reflects the quite unique mix of policy and institutional features in Singapore's environment - remarkably high growth, very open economy, rapid structural change, particularly intense economic relations with neighboring Southeast Asian nations, and a pervasive and paternalistic state role. The bases of Singapore's comparative advantage in these service exports are identified, and some general implications from its experience are analyzed.

In The Shadow Of Oriental Culture: A Study Of The Impact Of Confucianism On Japan's Economic Development After World War Ii, Xuedong Xu May 1991

In The Shadow Of Oriental Culture: A Study Of The Impact Of Confucianism On Japan's Economic Development After World War Ii, Xuedong Xu

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Japan's fast economic growth after World War II can be ascribed to different factors. This study seeks to determine whether the cultural factor, more specifically Confucianism in Japanese version, has constituted the dynamism behind the success stories of Japan. The study approaches the problem by examining the Confucian doctrine and original works of important Japanese philosophers concerning the Confucian ethics and values, which are recrystallized into new organizational patterns in industrial corporation. While the period after World War II is the focus of the study, the unique features of Japanese industry like "Life-time Employment" and "Groupism" are reviewed to determine …

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The 1990s will be a critical decade for Africa. The world is in the midst of fundamental change and the ideological blinkers which so greatly hampered economic development for so long have been taken off. Africa too is in the midst of change, political as well as economic. This change is characterized most fundamentally by the loud and persistent calls from people in Africa for more participation in the decisions which affect their lives. This is a very positive development. We at the World Bank feel confident that we are in a position to respond to these far-reaching changes. This …

Specification Tests Based On The Heterogeneous Generalized Gamma Model Of Duration: With An Application To Kennan's Strike Data, Sanjiv Jaggia Apr 1991

Specification Tests Based On The Heterogeneous Generalized Gamma Model Of Duration: With An Application To Kennan's Strike Data, Sanjiv Jaggia

Economics

In this paper, tests for neglected heterogeneity and functional form misspeciftcation of some commonly used parametric distributions are derived within a heterogeneous generalized gamma model. It is argued that the conventional test of heterogeneity may not be valid when the underlying hazard function is misspecified. Hence, if the estimated hazard function is deemed restrictive, tests for functional form misspecification should accompany any test of heterogeneity. An empirical illustration based on Kennan's (1985) model of strikes is used to show that incorrect inferences may be drawn, as in a number of previous analyses, if the relevant restrictions are not tested jointly.

Exactly Unbiased Estimation Of First Order Autoregressive/Unit Root Models, Donald W.K. Andrews Apr 1991

Exactly Unbiased Estimation Of First Order Autoregressive/Unit Root Models, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper is concerned with the estimation of first-order autoregressive/unit root models with independent identically distributed normal errors. The models considered include those without an intercept, those with an intercept, and those with an intercept and time trend. The autoregressive (AR) parameter alpha is allowed to lie in the interval (-1,1], which includes the case of a unit root. Exactly median-unbiased estimators of the AR parameter alpha are proposed. Exact confidence intervals for this parameter are introduced. Corresponding exactly median-unbiased estimators and exact confidence intervals are also provided for the impulse response function and the cumulative impulse response. An unbiased …
