Survey Of The Arkansas Campanulaceae (Including The Lobeliaceae), Edwin B. Smith

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

This paper is a summary of the Campanulaceae of Arkansas, based on the material on file in the University of Arkansas herbarium. A key to the species is included, followed by an alphabetical listing by genus and species of the taxa in the Campanulaceae known to occur in the state. After each taxon, the following information is included in this order: blooming period (as indicated on our material), known distribution in general terms (NW-northwest, E-east, G-general, C- central, etc.), habitat, chromosome number (as reported in Darlington & Wylie, 1955; in the Index to Plant Chromosome Numbers, Vol. I.II, and Supplement; …

Biometrical Study Of Morphology And Development Of The Pennsylvanian Trilobite Ameura Sangamonensis (Meek And Worthen), Roger K. Pabian, J. A. Fagerstrom

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Biometrical study of morphology and development in a sample of 100 cranidia, 94 pygidia, 26 free cheeks, and 9 complete specimens of the trilobite Ameura sangamonensis (Meek and Worthen) from the Bonner Springs Shale (Pennsylvanian; Missouri Series) in eastern Nebraska indicates that the dominant growth pattern was isometric. Evidence supporting this conclusion consists of rectilinear size relations among eight pairs of cranidial dimensions, three pairs of pygidial dimensions, and three pairs of dimensions of the free cheeks. Qualitative changes in pygidial morphology during development include a progressive decrease in prominence of the border, increasing width of the posterior border relative …

Notes On The Fern Family Matoniaceae From The Western United States, Samuel R. Rushforth

Theses and Dissertations

A Cretaceous fern flora haas been recently discovered near Westwater, Grand County, Utah. Among specimens collected from Westwater are many forms related to extant members of the fern family Matoniaceae. This family was widely distributed geographically throughout most of the Mesozoic Era, and matoniaceous ferns have been collected from several fossil localities in the United States. The Matoniaceae was especially important in the United States during Lower Cretaceous times. Five species, Matonidium brownii Rushforth, Matonidium lanceopennis Rushforth, Matonidium galleyi (Miner) Rushforth, Matonidium americanum Berry em. Rushforth, and Matonidium sp., and one variety, Matonidium brownii var. extenda Rushforth, are considered in …

Occurrence And Distribution Of Invertebrates In Lower Logan River, Nancy A. Erman May 1968

Occurrence And Distribution Of Invertebrates In Lower Logan River, Nancy A. Erman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study of bottom invertebrates on the lower Logan River, Logan, Utah was conducted from June 1966 to July 1967. One objective was to evaluate on a qualitative and quantitative basis the invertebrate populations above and below a sewage entry in the river. Another objective was to study the year-round fluctuations in the invertebrate population.

The greatest variety of invertebrates was found in the summer. Chironomidae and Baetis were the only two groups found in abundance over the entire year.

Populations were reduced during autumn when water levels rose, and they declined even more sharply during the spring flood.

Three Physical Measurements Of Male White-Tailed Deer In West Virginia Correlated With Soil Fertility And Population Density, Charles C. Coffman Jan 1968

Three Physical Measurements Of Male White-Tailed Deer In West Virginia Correlated With Soil Fertility And Population Density, Charles C. Coffman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Differences in the physical size of male white-tailed deer from varying parts of West Virginia were known to exist a considerable number of years before any sophisticated attempts were made to explain them. Prior to 1940, the state's deer herd had been making a slow, but increasingly steady, comeback from a period of extreme scarcity around the turn of the century. To supplement the original remaining stock, shown in Figure 1, page 2, a deer restocking program was initiated in 1923. In 1937, federal legislation, in the form of the Federal Aid to Wildlife Restoration Act, gave added support to …

West Midlands Development : Pastures For Sandplain Soils, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TRIALS at the Badgingarra Research Station have indicated that many pasture species will grow in the West Midlands area.

Choice of the species most suited to any particular locality will be influenced by soil type, rainfall, grazing characteristics and possible ill-effects on stock.

The following species have been recommended.

Ecological Study Of The Effects Of Strip Mining On The Microbiology Of Streams, Ralph H. Weaver, Harry D. Nash Jan 1968

Ecological Study Of The Effects Of Strip Mining On The Microbiology Of Streams, Ralph H. Weaver, Harry D. Nash

KWRRI Research Reports

The microflora of Cane Branch of Beaver Creek in McCreary County, Kentucky, which drains an area that was strip-mined between 1955 and 1959, was studied and compared with that of Helton Branch which drains a comparable area where there has been no mining. Differences include: the establishment of Ferrcbacillus ferrooxidans, for which procedures were developed for direct colony isolation from the stream; fewer saprophytic bacteria; more numerous and more diversified filamentous and unicellular fungi; and characteristic differences in algal flora. Representatives of 42 genera of filamentous fungi were identified. Of these, 21 were isolated only from Cane Branch. Representatives of …

Prairie Plants And Their Environment, J. E. Weaver Jan 1968

Prairie Plants And Their Environment, J. E. Weaver

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

When, in 1916, the writer came to the University of Nebraska as a young instructor, he came with a background that well fitted him for studies in the field. His research in the grassland and adjoining forests of southeastern Washington and adjacent Idaho had been completed and a fine acquaintance had been made with methods of examining the prairie both above and below ground level (Weaver, 1915, 1917). Similar studies in the area between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains were now to be made, and these have resulted in many new investigations that are of both scientific and …

Grasshoppers And Locusts In Western Australia, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

GRASSHOPPERS and locusts are among the most ancient enemies of the farmer, for they figured prominently in Biblical times, and periodically throughout the ages have devastated crops in all parts of the world.
