Effect Of Domestic Effluent On Two Spring Surveys Of Fishes In Lost Creek, Craighead County, Arkansas, John K. Beadles

Lost Creek is representative of deltonic streams of the St. Francis Basin possessing characteristics of being turbid. It has a low flow velocity except during the annual spring rains. Lost Creek meanders approximately 18 km. before receiving effluents and empties into Big Creek approximately 4 km. west of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Five collecting stations were studied in 1966 while six stations were sampled in 1970. Some fishes have been found to tolerate moderate amounts of domestic effluents and it is probable that the two species Lepomis cyanellus and Ictalurus melas, collected within the effluents, were more resistant than the other species …

RECENT surveys indicate that in the medium and high rainfall cereal and sheep areas as much as half the new pasture sown is sown with a crop.

In the drier wheatbelt areas the figure is 20 to 30 per cent.

Little work has been done on the ecology of alpine and subalpine small mammals. They are included in faunal surveys, but little is known of their habits. In the summer of 1969 this study was undertaken in subalpine Huckleberry Park, Mount Rainier National Park, to determine the species of small mammals in the area and some of their relationships with the environment and each other. The relationships between E. amoenus and E. townsendii were of special interest.

Curry County merits study for several reasons. Very little work has been done on its mammalian fauna resulting in a limited number of specimens. In turn there is a sparsity of literature; that written is chiefly concerned with the genera Arborimus and Phenacomys. The location of the county places it in an area of scrambled geological history resulting in a diverse mixture of faunal and floral elements. Logging, agriculture, and grazing activities have altered and continue to alter the natural habitats. These interests have permanently changed both the floristic and faunistic composition of the county.

Provides an overview of the field of chiropteran systematics in a way that will introduce the non-chiropterologist to the subject. By way of example, we have alluded to several aspects of taxonomic research at different levels in the hierarchy. Recourse to the publications cited at the appropriate places in the text will amplify our remarks and provide a solid background in the current work of the discipline.

Basically, taxonomic characters are where the taxonomist finds them; some, but not all, will prove useful also in elucidating relationships and evolutionary descent of taxa. Much remains to be done in these areas, …

Food Habits Of Dicamptodon Ensatus And Associated Fish Species Of Maratta Creek, Washington, Authur L. Antonelli

Three cold-blooded vertebrates, Dicamptodon ensatus, Cottus tenuis, and Salmo gairdneri were investigated as to food habits for a period of one year. The existence of competition between these animals for food was determined by means of stomach analysis. The results were compared relative to each vertebrate and the bottom fauna procurred from the stream. It was shown that the food habits of D. ensatus and S. gairdneri were diverse enough to warrant partial exclusion on the basis of food. C. tenuis demonstrated selectivity and was shown to be under competitive stress from the other two species.

The rates of algal production and Sphaerotilus assimilation in the lower Logan River benthos were investigated in 1966 and 1967.

The rate of annual gross primary production (3,416 Kcal/m²/yr) was estimated from the relation of pigments to the photosynthetic rate of benthic communities in a submersible, metabolism chamber. The photosynthetic rate was predicted with high precision when a measure of the accessory pigments (D480/D665 and/or chlorophyll-c) was considered with the chlorophyll-a. The pigment density estimates were obtained from the community present on paraffin-coated, concrete hemispheres after immersion in the river for periods ranging from 11 to 20 …

A study of the microclimate of erosion control treatments was carried out in two habitat types in a semiarid southeastern Utah, salt desert shrub area. The soils are highly eroded Mancos shale and support a low density of salt desert shrub species which offers little protection against high intensity summer convectional rainstorms.

Gully plugs and contour furrows had been installed by the Bureaus of Reclamation and Land Management to prevent runoff of soil laden water which results from these summer rainfalls. Formerly this sediment was carried to the Colorado River and deposited in Lake Powell.

THE wildflowers of Western Australia which have aroused such interest throughout the world are found largely in the south western corner of the State.

Within this area, and indeed in the drier areas also, certain districts are richer than others.

A new species of rhinoceros, Menoceras marslandensis, is here proposed. It is based upon a nearly complete skull from the upper part of the Marsland Formation, Hemingford Group (Miocene), of Box Butte County, Nebraska. The new species was probably derived from Menoceras arikarense (Barbour), collected from the Agate Springs Quarries (Arikaree Group, Harrison Formation) of Sioux County, Nebraska, with which both Diceratherium niobrarensis Peterson and D. cooki Peterson are likely synonymous. From Menoceras arikarense, the presumed ancestral stock, Menoceras marslandensis differs in possessing the following characters: (1) very long, fused but slightly cleft, nasals, with flattened, rugose areas …

RESEARCH in the Geraldton area has indicated that seeds of the saffron thistle (Carthamus lanatus) spread their germination over some seven years but most germinate in the first two years.

Factors influencing the rate of germination and the survival of seeds are the depth of burial and the presence of termites in the soil.
