Introduction
The purpose of this survey was to obtain information concerning existing wells and springs and the quantity and quality of water they yield, and to put down test holes where additional information was needed.
This project was part of a statewide Works Progress Administration project known as a "Statewide Inventory of Water Wells," sponsored by the [Texas] State Board of Water Engineers. The Division of Ground Water of the United States Geological Survey cooperated in the technical direction of the project and the Bureau of Industrial Chemistry of the University of Texas furnished laboratory space and equipment and supervised …

It has been proven that cadmium forms a very satisfactory plate on steel, which has to withstand severe corrosion, especially the corrosion of sea water and spray. The metal is now successfully plated electrolytically from cyanide solutions, but wherever work is carried on with cyanide, there is great danger of poisoning to the workers.

Rhenium properties offer many interesting possibilities, therefore any ores containing rhenium would be of considerable value. Its close relationship to manganese in the periodic table led to the belief that manganese ores would be an excellent place to search for the metal. Investigation of the literature of rhenium revealed that no ore was known to contain more than 0.001 per cent of rhenium.

The purpose of this research was to continue the work of Thomas Parker, who worked on the recovery of copper and zinc from brass during the school year l934 - 1935. Investigators in soils have long recognized the importance of the colloidal fraction of soil, and also the almost inseparable problem of replaceable bases. It is generally accepted that the replaceable base fraction of a colloid controls to a large degree the physical properties exhibited by it. Volumes of work have been written on the problem of controlling the reactions of this fraction and on studies of the properties exhibited by it when it is saturated with various cations. Each worker has proceeded in his own individual way or followed the example set by some previous worker with specific modifications.

These three woods undoubtedly ranged over Western America in Tertiary and were well represented in the Ginkgo series of forest during Miocene. Fossil walnut wood is the more abundant of the three species, while hickory is not common.

However foreign they may seem to us the camels are one of our oldest American stocks. Our Western plains once supported large herds of them, humped and humpless, large and small, giraffe-necked and normal-necked. For some 35 million years, from Oligocene to the Pliocene, the camels were confined to North America and it was not until recently, geologically speaking that we shared the race with the Old World.

The oaks, unlike the sacred ginkgo or temple tree, are thriving throughout the northern hemisphere today. Not only is the oak an entirely familiar and abundant element in existing landscapes, but its history goes back into the centuries and ages. Its leaves and woods are generously represented in fossil forests as far back as the early Tertiary and closely allied forms penetrate as far back as the Cretaceous.

During several months of each year, soil and bodies of water in high latitudes are separated from the enveloping atmosphere by a layer of snow and ice of varying thickness. The effects of this insulating layer are not well understood, having received relatively a rather surprisingly small amount of attention by ecologists. It is known that snow cover influences the heat exchange between the surface of the earth and the air. Soil Nutrient losses have followed closely in the paths of advancing frontiers in agriculture. Remedies for depletion as the result of overcropping were sought by George Washington, whose interest and investigation of soil nutrient losses probably represent the earliest attention given to land exploitation in the United States, which at the present time has become a problem of national concern. Soil losses have been attributed to a number of causes , among which are cropping, erosion, leaching, burning, and rapid oxidation of organic matter in the soil. The most interesting single fossil tree, but at the same time the most difficult to determine in the Ginkgo Petrified Forest (Washington), is the tree after which this unusual petrified forest takes its name. The ginkgo is not only the world's oldest and most remarkable living tree, but it has long been regarded as holding the most striking fossil record of any living thing, plant or animal.

The collector and student of petrified woods cannot long be satisfied to merely place these colorful and interesting specimens in the cabinet with the mere label, "petrified wood." Frequently determining the types of wood which once thrived in a given area is of importance to give a clue to climatic conditions of past geological ages. The collector should at least be qualified to recognize the more common woods and distinguish one family of trees from another.

DURING the course of a field conference on the Pleistocene geology of western Nebraska, carved sediments were found in the headwater drainage of White River near Crawford, Nebraska. A reconnaissance of White River Valley revealed them to be present also in the mid-course, near Interior, South Dakota, and at the mouth, near Chamberlain, South Dakota, where the White River joins the Missouri (Fig. 1). These isolated occurrences of varves, over a distance of 240 miles, are so similar that a correlation seemed possible. In many deposits of silver ores the grade of the ore decreases considerably a few hundred feet below the surface. It is believed that in many cases the better ores owe their richness in part to the process of sulphide enrichment. It is recognized, however, that many rich silver ores are hypogene deposits that have been affected very little, if any, by processes of enrichment.
