It is estimated that 90 to 95% of the world’s consumption of manganese is used in the steel industry in the form of either ferromanganese or spiegeleisen. The remainder is used in the form of either salts or oxides, chloride, dioxide and monoxide.

The accepted chemical reactions in the dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions require the presence of gold, cyanide, water, and oxygen. The importance of dissolved oxygen in cyanide solutions as a factor is recognized by those familiar with cyanidation. Manufacturers of cyanidation equipment realize the necessity of oxygen, as shown by the appliances they have developed which are attached to the agitators in order to saturate the cyanide solutions with air.

The use of zinc as a structural metal has been militated against by two of its properties, namely, its low tensile strength and its susceptibility to grain growth. The importance of these factors can be appreciated when it is realized that the tensile strength of coarsely crystalline cast zinc is 4,000 pounds per square inch, while finely crystalline cast zinc has a tensile strength of 12,000 pounds per square inch.

On the southern margin of the Boulder Batholith, about twenty miles south of Butte in the Highland Mountains, there are many miles of contact between the igneous and sedimentary rocks. As two kinds of igneous rocks and many different kinds of sedimentary rock are present, it is an excellent place for the study of contact metamorphism.

The structure of the western three or four miles of the Bear River range east of Logan, Utah, has many times been alluded to in papers written locally on Cache Valley and the related ranges. Inorganic bodies known as minerals make up, either in whole rock-masses or in isolated form, the material of the upper crust of the earth. Through the evidence furnished by this study of meteorites, we also infer that other bodies in the universe are made up of minerals, or at least those portions of them which are represented by meteorites.

There has been much discussion recently relative to the geologic age of Yuma and Folsom artifacts. The writers submit the following palaeontological and geological data which may aid in a better interpretation of the subject. This paper deals with three localities in Nebraska where Yuma and Folsom implements have been found with extinct mammals; namely, the Scottsbluff Bison Quarry, the Sand Hill blow-out sites, and the Sioux County artifact sites.

Amherst township was selected as the area to be studied because it was believed to be as nearly representative of the aspects of land and life in north central Ohio as any small area that could be found. It is located on a section of the Lake Plain which has somewhat parallel lines formed by three beach-ridges, and on the northern edge of the Glaciated Plain. Then, the quarrying of the world famous Berea sandstone gives somewhat of an individual aspect to the small towns within Amherst township.

The recent discovery that even very small concentrations of fluorides in drinking waters are sufficient to cause the serious dental dystrophy commonly known as mottled enamel, has around widespread interest and concern. Federal and State surveys have been conducted to determine the geographical distribution of the malady, and the fluoride contents of water supplies.
County dental surveys, conducted by the United States Public Health Department with the cooperation of local dentists, have located the regions throughout the country where mottled enamel is endemic and among these localities is an area in southeastern North Dakota and adjacent territory in South Dakota …

Such an overwhelming majority of the floral and faunal remains of the earth's crust have been yielded by rocks of sedimentary origin that generalized statements concerning the occurrence of fossils often neglect their more rare appearance in metamorphic and igneous rocks. In fact there is the temptation, after volcanic tuffs have been excluded as more or less sedimentary, to venture the positive assertion that by their very character igneous rocks are incapable of recording the presence of the life which may have existed at the time of their extrusion. The domestic water supply of Warren County, outside of the city of Bowling Green, is obtained from deep wells and springs. The county is about evenly divided into a southern section of cavernous limestone and a northern section of mixed sandstone and limestone formations.
The wells of the southern cavernous limestone region receive water from unfiltered underground streams and lakes. Most of the wells of the northern region are drilled in sandstone and the water, in a majority of cases, is filtered through porous sandstone and shale.

The Cardwell Mining District is part of the greater Whitehall Mining District. The district is situated about four miles to the east and northeast of Whitehall in the southern end of the Bull Mountains which are near the Continental Divide. The first reported production was in 1896 after the discovery of the Mayflower Mine. Mining has been carried on intermittently and on a small scale since that time.

Careful examination of the literature available shows that the electrodeposition of manganese from various aqueous solutions has not been attempted to any great extent. The best method for the electrodeposition of pure manganese consists in the electrolysis of a solution containing manganous and ammonium sulphates.

The object of this work has been to devise a method by which the different phases in the chalcocite-stibnite-galena ternary system may be identified. The largest known deposits of tungsten ores occur in the continuation of the Indo-Malayan Mountains, which extends through Burma, Malaya, China, Japan, and Chosen. Production of tungsten concentrates was started in 1910 in Burma, and in 1911 this country was the world's largest producer. China produced but little until 1916, but has since supplied over fifty per cent of the world's requirements.

A microscopic investigation of the Montana silver minerals was conducted. This study consisted mainly of identifying the silver and silver-bearing minerals and of determining their paragenetic relationships. The increasing amount of research in which the reflecting microscope is employed is evidence of the great value of this method of approach in the solution of problems of paragenesis of the opaque minerals.
