Gypsum deposits are widespread geographically and are in many geo­logic formations. Ordinarily their character and origin, for the most part sedimentary, are not difficult to ascertain. Near Lewis and Clark Caverns, east of Whitehall, Montana, occurs a deposit of gypsum unique in many re­spects.

It is the object of this paper to present a method for classifying and evaluating the soils as mapped in regular soil surveys on the basis of land types, which are here defined as areas having reasonably similar productivity and use suitabilities. The standards used to differentiate land types will vary according to the desired objectives, but any material difference in yield, or in practices necessary to maintain a desirable level of productivity will justify recognition of land types. Morrison Cave is located about 50 miles southeast of Butte, Montana. It was named after the man who discovered it. Later it was taken over by the State and renamed Morrison Cave State Park. Recently the government with the aid of the Civilian Conservation Corps has built a new road to the cave and has made the interior more accessible. The name of the cave is now Lewis and Clark Cavern National Monument.

The primary purpose of this paper is to present specific data as a means of explaining the sedimentation conditions at the time of deposition of the Oriskany Sandstone. The data were obtained through the use of laboratory methods upon specimens taken from several outcrops in the vicinity of Monterey, Virginia (see Darton's U.S.G.S. folio No. 51). In addition to the presentation of objective results, the author has attempted to make tentative interpretations of them, based primarily upon textural and shape analysis of the sediment. The investigation here reported, which covered a period of about 5 years, 1929 to 1933, was made for the purpose of determining the available supply of ground water in south-central Nebraska, the origin and discharge of the ground water, and the relation of the geologic and ground-water conditions in the Platte River Valley to the conditions occurring under the plains to the south. The area was found to be underlain by permeable Pleistocene and Tertiary sand .and gravel, much of which is saturated and yields relatively large quantities of water to wells. Bidding for acceptance as fact, and for its place in the sun of fame and notoriety, we come now to the newly discovered fossil rhino animal mold of Blue Lake in Grand Coulee, central Washington. Not that fossil rhinos are rare or that their abundance in the Tertiary of America has waited until the present for revelation, is this fossil important. The feature in the Blue Lake rhino which taxes our credulity is the existence of the thing in what unquestionably must pass as once liquid basaltic lava.
