A Gis Approach For The Abandoned Mine Inventory With Haul Roads Of The Monongahela National Forest To Provide A Comparative Analysis Of Usfs/Usace Collection Procedures And Image Basemap Selection For Cartographic Representation, John R. Ferguson Ii

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Monongahela National Forest spans 10 counties in eastern central West Virginia. It has been an area of high mining and timbering activities throughout much of the early to mid twentieth century. As a result, the United States Forest Service (USFS) has focused reclamation and remediation efforts on the abandoned mine land areas. Much of the area has been subjected to mining after effects such as acid mine drainage, structural remains, gob/spoil piles, garbage piles, mine portals, and highwalls. In 1998 the USFS contracted with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to locate these mining remains and provide a …

A New Megalonychid Sloth From The Late Wisconsinan Of The Dominican Republic, Elizabeth Rega, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Keith Christenson Jan 2002

A New Megalonychid Sloth From The Late Wisconsinan Of The Dominican Republic, Elizabeth Rega, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Keith Christenson

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

An unusually well preserved skull, mandible, and indisputably associated post-cranial elements of new sloth, Acratocnus (Miocnus), were recovered from a cave in Jaragua National Park, Dominican Republic. The animal died lying in a rimstone pool and was rapidly coated with a thin calcite patina. We have documented a late Wisconsinan age for this specimen by inorganic 14C radiometric dating of the patina, with supporting data on the carbon systematics of the speleothems in this cave. This sloth is described as a new species on the basis of the distinctive morphology and relative size of cranial and mandibular features. We consider …

Aftershocks And Pore Fluid Diffusion Following The 1992 Landers Earthquake, William Bosl, A Nur Jan 2002

Aftershocks And Pore Fluid Diffusion Following The 1992 Landers Earthquake, William Bosl, A Nur

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

We model the evolution of regional stress following the 1992 Landers earthquake in order to test the importance of pore fluid flow in producing aftershocks. Rising fluid pressure due to pore fluid flow and the resulting Coulomb stress changes were found to be strongly correlated with the time and location of aftershock events. Regional aftershock frequencies computed by integrating pore pressure decay rates also agreed quite well with aftershock data. Calculations show that regions of rising postseismic poroelastic Coulomb stress overlap considerably with regions of positive coseismic Coulomb stress. Thus pore fluid flow, which affects pore pressure within faults and …

Basal Conditions And Glacier Motion During The Winter/Spring Transition, Worthington Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., Joel T. Harper, Neil Humphrey, Mark C. Greenwood

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Observations of the motion and basal conditions of Worthington Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., during late-winter and spring melt seasons revealed no evidence of a relationship between water pressure and sliding velocity. Measurements included borehole water levels (used as a proxy for basal water pressure), surface velocity, englacial deformation, sliding velocity, and time-lapse videography of subglacial water flow and bed characteristics. The boreholes were spaced 10-15 m apart; six were instrumented in 1997, and five in 1998. In late winter, the water-pressure field showed spatially synchronous fluctuations with a diurnal cycle. The glacier's motion was relatively slow and non-cyclic. In spring, the …

Soil Leachate Responses During 10 Years Of Induced Whole-Watershed Acidification, Pamela J. Edwards, James N. Kochenderfer, Dean W. Coble, Mary Beth Adams

Faculty Publications

Soil solution was collected from zero-tension lysimeters for 10 yr on two small central Appalachian watersheds in West Virginia, U.S.A. Ammonium sulfate fertilizer was applied to one catchment 3 times per year during each year. The other watershed was used as a reference to account for ambient baseline conditions. Ca and Mg concentrations collected below the A- and B-horizons of the treated watershed increased and then decreased over time as a result of the treatment. By contrast, Ca and Mg concentrations in the C-horizon continued to increase throughout the study period.

Vocs, Pesticides, Nitrate, And Their Mixtures In Groundwater Used For Drinking Water In The United States, Paul Squillace, Jonathon Scott, Michael Moran, B. T. Nolan, Dana Kolpin Jan 2002

Vocs, Pesticides, Nitrate, And Their Mixtures In Groundwater Used For Drinking Water In The United States, Paul Squillace, Jonathon Scott, Michael Moran, B. T. Nolan, Dana Kolpin

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Samples of untreated groundwater from 1255 domestic drinking-water wells and 242 public supply wells were analyzed as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program of the U.S. Geological Survey between 1992 and 1999. Wells were sampled to define the regional quality of the groundwater resource and, thus, were distributed geographically across large aquifers, primarily in rural areas. For each sample, as many as 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 83 pesticides, and nitrate were analyzed. On the basis of previous studies, nitrate concentrations as nitrogen ≥3 mg/L were considered to have an anthropogenic origin. VOCs were detected more frequently (44%) than …

Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, And Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants In U.S. Streams, 1999-2000: A National Reconnaissance, Dana Kolpin, Edward Furlong, Michael Meyer, E. Michael Thurman, Steven Zaugg, Larry Barber, Herbert Buxton Jan 2002

Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, And Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants In U.S. Streams, 1999-2000: A National Reconnaissance, Dana Kolpin, Edward Furlong, Michael Meyer, E. Michael Thurman, Steven Zaugg, Larry Barber, Herbert Buxton

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

To provide the first nationwide reconnaissance of the occurrence of pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs) in water resources, the U.S. Geological Survey used five newly developed analytical methods to measure concentrations of 95 OWCs in water samples from a network of 139 streams across 30 states during 1999 and 2000. The selection of sampling sites was biased toward streams susceptible to contamination (i.e. downstream of intense urbanization and livestock production). OWCs were prevalent during this study, being found in 80% of the streams sampled. The compounds detected represent a wide range of residential, industrial, and agricultural origins …

Holocene Multidecadal And Multicentennial Droughts Affecting Northern California And Nevada, Larry Benson, Michaele Kashgarian, Robert Rye, Steve Lund, Fred Paillet, Joseph Smoot, Cynthia Kester, Scott Mensing, Dave Meko, Susan Landström Jan 2002

Holocene Multidecadal And Multicentennial Droughts Affecting Northern California And Nevada, Larry Benson, Michaele Kashgarian, Robert Rye, Steve Lund, Fred Paillet, Joseph Smoot, Cynthia Kester, Scott Mensing, Dave Meko, Susan Landström

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Continuous, high-resolution δ18O records from cored sediments of Pyramid Lake, Nevada, indicate that oscillations in the hydrologic balance occurred, on average, about every 150 years (yr) during the past 7630 calendar years (cal yr). The records are not stationary; during the past 2740 yr, drought durations ranged from 20 to 100 yr and intervals between droughts ranged from 80 to 230 yr. Comparison of tree-ring-based reconstructions of climate change for the past 1200 yr from the Sierra Nevada and the El Malpais region of northwest New Mexico indicates that severe droughts associated with Anasazi withdrawal from Chaco Canyon …

Depositional History And Neotectonics In Great Salt Lake, Utah, From High-Resolution Seismic Stratigraphy, Steven M. Colman, Kerry R. Kelts, David A. Dinter Jan 2002

Depositional History And Neotectonics In Great Salt Lake, Utah, From High-Resolution Seismic Stratigraphy, Steven M. Colman, Kerry R. Kelts, David A. Dinter

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

High-resolution seismic-reflection data from Great Salt Lake show that the basinal sediment sequence is cut by numerous faults with N–S and NE–SW orientations. This faulting shows evidence of varied timing and relative offsets, but includes at least three events totaling about 12 m following the Bonneville phase of the lake (since about 13.5 ka). Several faults displace the uppermost sediments and the lake floor. Bioherm structures are present above some faults, which suggests that the faults served as conduits for sublacustrine discharge of fresh water. A shallow, fault-controlled ridge between Carrington Island and Promontory Point, underlain by a well-cemented pavement, …

Determination Of Melanterite-Rozenite And Chalcanthite-Bonattite Equilibria By Humidity Measurements At 0.1 Mpa, I-Ming Chou, R.R. Seal Ii, B.S. Hemingway Jan 2002

Determination Of Melanterite-Rozenite And Chalcanthite-Bonattite Equilibria By Humidity Measurements At 0.1 Mpa, I-Ming Chou, R.R. Seal Ii, B.S. Hemingway

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Melanterite (FeSO4•7H2O)-rozenite (FeSO4•4H2O) and chalcanthite (CuSO4•5H2O)-bonattite (CuSO4•3H2O) equilibria were determined by humidity measurements at 0.1 MPa. Two methods were used; one is the gas-flow-cell method (between 21 and 98 °C), and the other is the humidity buffer method (between 21 and 70 °C). The first method has a larger temperature uncertainty even though it is more efficient. With the aid of humidity buffers, which correspond to a series of saturated binary salt solutions, the second method yields reliable results as demonstrated by very tight …

The Ophiolitic Molasse Unit Of Ikaria Island (Greece), Adonis D. Photiades Jan 2002

The Ophiolitic Molasse Unit Of Ikaria Island (Greece), Adonis D. Photiades

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Ikaria Island can be divided generally into two composite tectonic units, namely the lower and upper. The lower unit comprises paragneiss basement with local orthogneiss bodies that is overlain by a platform-type marble sequence, passing upward into a sequence of intercalated schist and marble that is intruded by Miocene granites. The upper unit has not experienced Alpine high-pressure metamorphism, and is restricted to the central (Kefala unit) and northeastern (Faros area) parts of the island, which host ophiolitic associations similar to those found in the upper unit of several Cycladic islands. The Faros area consists of an Oligocene-Early Miocene age …

Resistivity Distribution In The Gediz Graben And Its Implications For Crustal Structure, Aysan Gürer, Alaatti̇n Pi̇nçe, Ömer Feyzi̇ Gürer, O. Meti̇n İlkişik Jan 2002

Resistivity Distribution In The Gediz Graben And Its Implications For Crustal Structure, Aysan Gürer, Alaatti̇n Pi̇nçe, Ömer Feyzi̇ Gürer, O. Meti̇n İlkişik

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Preliminary results of resistivity distribution in the crust around the Gediz graben by the magnetotelluric (MT) measurements along two 73- and 16-km-long MT profiles (M1 and profile M2) are presented. Bostick depth transformation of the resistivity component of the MT data denoted a conductive zone at a depth of ~ 10 km. This zone may be related to crustal extension and high regional heat flow (50% higher than the world average). Preliminary interpretation based on one dimensional (1D) inversion result show that the thickness of sediments over the resistive basement changes from 950-3800 m along the profile M1. The relations …

Sonar And High Resolution Seismic Studies In The Eastern Black Sea, Günay Çi̇fçi̇, Derman Dondurur, Mustafa Ergün Jan 2002

Sonar And High Resolution Seismic Studies In The Eastern Black Sea, Günay Çi̇fçi̇, Derman Dondurur, Mustafa Ergün

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Black Sea is one of the largest inland seas in the world. Off the shelf, the water depth quickly plunges to an average depth of 2 km. The Black Sea sediments are rich in calcite and organic carbon, the latter showing a high degree of preservation due to anoxia in the waters below 100-150 m. Slope failures and sediment instability related to immense gas and gas hydrate accumulations are serious problems that can lead to the failure of offshore installations. Marine geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Eastern Black Sea basin using state-of the-art technology to produce …

Tectonostratigraphic Evolution Of The North Anatolian Palaeorift (Napr): Hettangian-Aptian Passive Continental Margin Of The Northern Neo-Tethys, Turkey, Ali̇ Koçyi̇ği̇t, Demi̇r Altiner Jan 2002

Tectonostratigraphic Evolution Of The North Anatolian Palaeorift (Napr): Hettangian-Aptian Passive Continental Margin Of The Northern Neo-Tethys, Turkey, Ali̇ Koçyi̇ği̇t, Demi̇r Altiner

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Jurassic-Early Cretaceous stratigraphical, sedimentological and structural evolutionary history of the northern branch of Neo-Tethys is recorded and preserved within an average 6-km-thick basin fill. The basin fill is well-exposed as discontinuous inliers of varying size and thickness within, and to the north of, the Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary İzmir-Ankara-Erzincan Suture throughout northern Turkey. This basin fill unconformably overlies a substratum comprising the deformed rock assemblages of the Triassic Karakaya palaeorift and its Hercynian basement. Detailed studies based on geological mapping at a 1/25,000 scale and stratigraphic sections measured at 14 type localities show that this infill includes stratigraphical and sedimentological …

Upper Cretaceous Diatom Biostratigraphy Of The Arctic Archipelago And Northern Continental Margin, Canada, Pedro M. Tapia, David M. Harwood Jan 2002

Upper Cretaceous Diatom Biostratigraphy Of The Arctic Archipelago And Northern Continental Margin, Canada, Pedro M. Tapia, David M. Harwood

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Strata in the Canadian Arctic contain diverse and moderately well-preserved Late Cretaceous siliceous microfossil assemblages. One-hundred-twelve samples were analyzed from a composite stratigraphic section (1094m-thick) of the Smoking Hills, Mason River and Kanguk formations. Four sections were examined: (1) Slidre Fjord on Ellesmere Island; (2) Hoodoo Dome on Ellef Ringnes Island; (3) Cape Nares on Eglinton Island; and (4) Horton River on the Anderson Plains, Northwest Territories. Two hundred- three diatom taxa were identified in forty-nine productive samples. Four Upper Cretaceous diatom zones are proposed for the Canadian Arctic based on the biostratigraphic distribution of diatoms: (i) the Upper Cenomanian …

Effects Of Surface Run-Off On The Transport Of Agricultural Chemicals To Ground Water In A Sandplain Setting, Geoffrey N. Delin, Matthew K. Landon Jan 2002

Effects Of Surface Run-Off On The Transport Of Agricultural Chemicals To Ground Water In A Sandplain Setting, Geoffrey N. Delin, Matthew K. Landon

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

An experiment was conducted at a depressional (lowland) and an upland site in sandy soils to evaluate the effects of surface run-off on the transport of agricultural chemicals to ground water. Approximately 16.5 cm of water was applied to both sites during the experiment, representing a natural precipitation event with a recurrence interval of approximately 100 years. Run-off was quantified at the lowland site and was not detected at the upland site during the experiment. Run-off of water to the lowland site was the most important factor affecting differences in the concentrations and fluxes of the agricultural chemicals between the …

Precursory Transient Slip During The 2001 MW = 8.4 Peru Earthquake Sequence From Continuous Gps, Timothy I. Melbourne, Frank H. Webb Jan 2002

Precursory Transient Slip During The 2001 MW = 8.4 Peru Earthquake Sequence From Continuous Gps, Timothy I. Melbourne, Frank H. Webb

Faculty Scholarship for the Cascadia Hazards Institute

Two-hour position estimates from a continuous GPS station located at Arequipa, Peru, document precursory deformation beginning 18 hours prior to an Mw = 7.6 aftershock of the June 23rd 2001 Mw = 8.4 earthquake. This preseismic signal appears on the north and east components as a slow displacement with an amplitude twice that of the subsequent coseismic. Analysis of three years of 18-hour rate measurement shows this signal to be unprecedented and beyond four standard deviations from the mean rate. The best fitting centroid is directionally consistent with slow slip along the plate interface and suggests the preseismic …

Rates Of Sedimentation In The Central Arctic Ocean, Jan Backman, Martin Jakobsson, Reidar Lovlie, Leonid Polyak Jan 2002

Rates Of Sedimentation In The Central Arctic Ocean, Jan Backman, Martin Jakobsson, Reidar Lovlie, Leonid Polyak

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The Arctic Ocean is presently undergoing geoscientific investigations of the type that occurred during the late 1940's through 1960's in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Seismic reflection and refraction data are scarce in the Arctic Ocean and large areas are virtually unsampled with respect to piston or gravity coring. The vast majority of available cores are less than10 m in length and largely lack biostratigraphically useful calcareous and siliceous microfossils. No drill cores exist from the ridges or deep basins in the central Arctic Ocean. Considering the limited geophysical and geological data available, it is not surprising that current …

Direct Sequential Simulation Algorithms In Geostatistics, Robyn Robertson Jan 2002

Direct Sequential Simulation Algorithms In Geostatistics, Robyn Robertson

Theses : Honours

Conditional sequential simulation algorithms have been used in geostatistics for many years but we currently find new developments are being made in this field. This thesis presents two new direct sequential simulation with histogram reproduction algorithms and compares them with the efficient and widely used sequential Gaussian simulation algorithm and the original direct sequential simulation algorithm. We explore the possibility of reproducing both the semivariogram and the histogram without the need for a transformation to normal space, through optimising an objective function and placing linear constraints on the local conditional distributions. Programs from the GSLIB Fortran library are expanded to …

Land Use Change And Modification Of Near-Surface Thermal Records In The Northern Great Plains, Rezaul Mahmood, Ken Hubbard, Christy Carlson Jan 2002

Land Use Change And Modification Of Near-Surface Thermal Records In The Northern Great Plains, Rezaul Mahmood, Ken Hubbard, Christy Carlson

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

The North American Great Plains have experienced a rapid overturning of natural grasslands to agricultural land use over the last century. Moreover, in some areas more than 80% of the land use has changed from dry land to irrigated agriculture during the second half of the twentieth century. It is speculated that these changes have modified near-surface atmospheric condition and our modeling study seems to support this. To identify changes in land surface- atmospheric modifications we have applied a soil moistureenergy balance model at three locations in Nebraska: Mead, York, and McCook. The model was applied for three land uses …
