Identification Of Subsonic P-Waves, Paul Michaels
Identification Of Subsonic P-Waves, Paul Michaels
CGISS Publications and Presentations
A field trial was conducted to test the existence of subsonic (Vp <331 m>/s) P-waves previously reported in the literature. A 1-m-long reverse profile was acquired with three-component (3C) geophones on a sandy silt (unified classification ML). The silt had a porosity of 54%, a degree of water saturation of 63%, and a plasticity index of 10. No subsonic P-waves were observed, although high frequency (up to 1200 Hz) Rayleigh waves were identified by hodogram analysis. These surface waves were observed with horizontal velocities that varied from 40 to 200 m/s. Hodogram observations and theory suggest that …331>
Depth Characterization Of Shallow Aquifers With Seismic Reflection, Part I—The Failure Of Nmo Velocity Analysis And Quantitative Error Prediction, John H. Bradford
Depth Characterization Of Shallow Aquifers With Seismic Reflection, Part I—The Failure Of Nmo Velocity Analysis And Quantitative Error Prediction, John H. Bradford
CGISS Publications and Presentations
As seismic reflection data become more prevalent as input for quantitative environmental and engineering studies, there is a growing need to assess and improve the accuracy of reflection processing methodologies. It is common for compressional-wave velocities to increase by a factor of four or more where shallow, unconsolidated sediments change from a dry or partially watersaturated regime to full saturation. While this degree of velocity contrast is rare in conventional seismology, it is a common scenario in shallow environments and leads to significant problems when trying to record and interpret reflections within about the first 30 m below the water …

Application Of Classification-Tree Methods To Identify Nitrate Sources In Ground Water, Timothy B. Spruill, William J. Showers, Stephen S. Howe
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A study was conducted to determine if nitrate sources in ground water (fertilizer on crops, fertilizer on golf courses, irrigation spray from hog (Sus scrofa) wastes, and leachate from poultry litter and septic systems) could be classified with 80% or greater success. Two statistical classification-tree models were devised from 48 water samples containing nitrate from five source categories. Model 1 was con- structed by evaluating 32 variables and selecting four primary predictor variables (δ15N, nitrate to ammonia ratio, sodium to potassium ratio, and zinc) to identify nitrate sources. A δ15N value of nitrate plus …
Passing The Torch Of Wildlife And Fisheries Management: Comparing The Attitudes And Values Of Younger And Older Conservation Professionals, Robert M. Muth, Rodney R. Zwick, Martha E. Mather, John F. Organ
Passing The Torch Of Wildlife And Fisheries Management: Comparing The Attitudes And Values Of Younger And Older Conservation Professionals, Robert M. Muth, Rodney R. Zwick, Martha E. Mather, John F. Organ
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Wildlife-related values in American society are undergoing considerable change. Within the last few decades, non-consumptive recreational use of wildlife has increased dramatically; groups that subscribe to animal protection values (ranging from animal welfare to animal rights to animal liberation) are exercising increasing influence over wildlife policy, and the ranks of people who practice wildlife rehabilitation have grown significantly. In this time of questioning and change, it should not be surprising that the attitudes and values of conservation professionals are in transition as well. Within many agencies and academic institutions, the traditional focus on game management (Geist et al. 2001) is …

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Ph, R. Stephen Fisher
Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Ph, R. Stephen Fisher
Information Circular--KGS
The parameter pH (the negative base-10 logarithm of hydrogen ion activity, measured in moles per liter) indicates whether a substance will behave as an acid or base. It is one of the most important parameters that describe groundwater quality, because pH largely controls the amount and chemical form of many organic and inorganic solutes in groundwater.

Insights Into The Mechanism For Orogen-Related Carbonate Remagnetization From Growth Of Authigenic Fe-Oxide: A Scanning Electron Microscopy And Rock Magnetic Study Of Devonian Carbonates From Northern Spain, Arlo Brandon Weil, Rob Van Der Woo
Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship
A rock magnetic and SEM study of Devonian carbonates from the Cantabria-Asturias Region, northern Spain, was undertaken to further our understanding of the pervasive remagnetization of carbonate rocks during the Late Paleozoic, and the mechanism by which these remagnetizations occur. These rocks contain three ancient Late Paleozoic magnetizations. The rock magnetic properties of mineral extracts were compared with those of whole rock chips and "nonmagnetic'' residue to deduce magnetic carrier(s) and grain sizes. Hysteresis measurements for rock chips show "typical'' wasp-waisted loops, whereas extract shows typical pseudosingle-domain-like (PSD) unrestricted loops. Within all sites, there is a noticeable contribution of superparamagnetic …

Kinematic data associated with both Laramide‐age and ‐style and Rio Grande rift‐related structures show that the latest Cretaceous to Neogene interaction between the Colorado Plateau and the North American craton was dominantly coupled with a component of dextral shear. Consistent with earlier studies, minor‐fault data in this study yielded results of varied kinematics. Inverted to a common northeast‐oriented hemisphere, the mean trend of kinematic shortening associated with Laramide‐age structures is 056∘±6" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; line-height: normal; word-spacing: normal; overflow-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border: 0px; padding: 0px …
Field Relations, Structural Geology, And Geochemistry Of The Jonestown Volcanic Field, Lebanon County, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Tristan J. Ashcroft
Field Relations, Structural Geology, And Geochemistry Of The Jonestown Volcanic Field, Lebanon County, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Tristan J. Ashcroft
Geology Theses and Dissertations
The Jonestown Volcanic Field is a five kilometer by fifteen kilometer area of volcanic and hypabyssal rocks, basalt and diabase, located in southeastern Pennsylvania. These igneous rocks presently occur within an allochthonous belt of Ordovician deep water sedimentary rocks and Taconic flysch rocks known collectively as the Hamburg Klippe. Detailed field mapping during this project has revealed that the contacts between the igneous rocks and the flysch are not conformable. The volcanic rocks are associated with the Ordovician limestone that is adjacent to these volcanics. This limestone also is not conformable to the Hamburg Klippe sediments, rather it shares outcrop …
The Use Of A Synthetic Binary Solid Solution To Model Igneous Textural Evolution, Elizabeth Scott
The Use Of A Synthetic Binary Solid Solution To Model Igneous Textural Evolution, Elizabeth Scott
Geology Theses and Dissertations
Crystallization experiments using a synthetic igneous analog have shown that grain boundary migration can take place in melt-present environments (Means and Park, 1994). In order to evaluate the importance of metamorphic processes during the textural evolution of a crystal mush, microstructural evidence is needed to link them with final igneous textures. In natural magmatic systems, plagioclase may provide a microstructural link; plagioclase solid solution enables the process of chemical zoning and preserves a record of crystal morphology (and chemistry) during growth. If metamorphic processes are common, they should affect the zoning patterns of plagioclase crystals.

Pyrite Deformation Textures In The Deposits Of The Küre Mining District (Kastamonu-Turkey), İlkay Kuşcu, Ayhan Erler
Pyrite Deformation Textures In The Deposits Of The Küre Mining District (Kastamonu-Turkey), İlkay Kuşcu, Ayhan Erler
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Küre volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits lie within the Kastamonu province in the western part of the Pontide tectonic belt of Turkey, and are hosted by ophiolite-related pre-Liassic basaltic sequences. Mineralogical studies of the pyritic massive sulfide deposits of the Küre mining district have shown that the sulfide assemblages, particularly pyrite, have undergone a history of deformation and metamorphism. The Küre volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits show a range of macroscopic and microscopic textures, which are also observed in metamorphosed VMS deposits elsewhere. These textures are cataclastic, annealing and fracture-filling textures which developed in two successive stages; cataclastic texture predominated during …
Progress On Geoenvironmental Models For Selected Mineral Deposit Types, Robert R. Seal Ii, Nora K. Foley
Progress On Geoenvironmental Models For Selected Mineral Deposit Types, Robert R. Seal Ii, Nora K. Foley
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Since the beginning of economic geology as a subdiscipline of the geological sciences, economic geologists have tended to classify mineral deposits on the basis of geological, mineralogical, and geochemical criteria, in efforts to systematize our understanding of mineral deposits as an aid to exploration. These efforts have lead to classifications based on commodity, geologic setting (Cox and Singer, 1986), inferred temperatures and pressures of ore formation (Lindgren, 1933), and genetic setting (Park and MacDiarmid, 1975; Jensen and Bateman, 1979). None of these classification schemes is mutually exclusive; instead, there is considerable overlap among all of these classifications. A natural outcome …

United States Geological Survey: Publications
Multi-Resolution Land Characterization 2000 (MRLC 2000) is a second-generation federal consortium to create an updated pool of nation-wide Landsat 7 imagery, and derive a second-generation National Land Cover Database (NLCD 2000). This multi-layer, multisource database will include a suite of 30-meter resolution data that will serve as standardized ingredients for the production of land cover – both nationally and locally. This database will also provide the framework to allow flexibility in developing and applying suites of independent data layers. These nationally standardized independent data layers or components, will be useful not only within the land-cover classification but as data themes …

United States Geological Survey: Publications
A new tasseled cap transformation based on Landsat 7 at-satellite reflectance was developed. This transformation is most appropriate for regional applications where atmospheric correction is not feasible. The brightness, greenness and wetness of the derived transformation collectively explained over 97% of the spectral variance of the individual scenes used in this study.

Assessment Of Elemental Concentrations In Streams Of The New Lead Belt In Southeastern Missouri, 2002–05, William G. Brumbaugh, Thomas W. May, John M. Besser, Ann L. Allert, Christopher J. Schmitt
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Concerns about possible effects of lead-mining activities on the water quality of federally protected streams located in southeastern Missouri prompted a suite of multidisciplinary studies to be conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. As part of this investigation, a series of biological studies were initiated in 2001 for streams in the current mining region and the prospecting area. In this report, results are examined for trace elements and other selected chemical measurements in sediment, surface water, and sediment interstitial (pore) water sampled between 2002 and 2005 in association with these biological studies. Compared to reference sites, fine sediments collected downstream …

Organochlorine Chemical Residues In Fish From The Mississippi River Basin, 1995, C.J. Schmitt
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
µ≤≥
Fish were collected in late 1995 from 34 National Contaminant Biomonitoring Program (NCBP) stations and 13 National Water Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA) stations in the Mississippi River basin (MRB) and in late 1996 from a reference site in West Virginia. Four composite samples, each comprising (nominally) 10 adult common carp (Cyprinus carpio) or black bass (Micropterus spp.) of the same sex, were collected from each site and analyzed for organochlorine chemical residues by gas chromatography with electron capture detection. At the NCBP stations, which are located on relatively large rivers, concentrations of organochlorine chemical residues were generally lower than …
Evidence For The Timing And Duration Of The Last Interglacial Period From High-Precision Uranium-Series Ages Of Corals On Tectonically Stable Coastlines, Daniel R. Muhs
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The last interglacial period has a timing and duration that can be estimated from U-series dating of emergent, coral-bearing deposits on tectonically stable coastlines. High-precision dating from Bermuda, the Bahamas, Hawaii, and Australia suggests that the last interglacial period had a sea level at least as high as present from ∼128,000 to 116,000 yr B.P. Sea level reached a near-present level more quickly after the close of the penultimate glacial period than at the close of the last glacial period and the duration of high sea level is longer than that implied by the deep-sea record.
Age Of Ground Water At City Of Lincoln's Municipal Well Field Near Ashland, Nebraska, Gregory V. Steele
Age Of Ground Water At City Of Lincoln's Municipal Well Field Near Ashland, Nebraska, Gregory V. Steele
United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications
The Platte River alluvial aquifer, which underlies the Plaue River Valley, is an important source of water for public supply in central and eastern Nebraska. Knowing the age of ground water can help scientists and water managers better understand the dynamics of the groundwater system. In turn, this knowledge will help in calibrating groundwater-flow models and aid in developing a conceptual understanding of how long it takes for recharge water to reach certain areas of the aquifer. Although previous studies (Davis, 1992; Steele and Verstraeten, 1999; Verstraeten et al., 1999) reported the interaction of surface water and ground water at …
West Nile Virus: A Threat To North American Avian Species, Robert G. Mclean
West Nile Virus: A Threat To North American Avian Species, Robert G. Mclean
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
West Nile virus (WNV) was introduced into the United States (US), specifically in New York City (NYC), in 1999; this translocation represented a major shift out of its normal geographical distribution of Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the western parts of Asia (Center for Disease Control 1999a). The route or method of entry into the US is still unknown. WNV is in the genus Flavivirus, the family Flaviviridae and is closely related to some other viruses in this family, such as Japanese encephalitis virus in Southeast Asia, Murray Valley encephalitis virus in Australia and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) …

The last interglacial, commonly understood as an interval with climate as warm or warmer than today, is represented by marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e, which is a proxy record of low global ice volume and high sea level. It is arbitrarily dated to begin at approximately 130,000 yr B.P. and end at 116,000 yr B.P. with the onset of the early glacial unit MIS 5d. The age of the stage is determined by correlation to uranium–thorium dates of raised coral reefs. The most detailed proxy record of interglacial climate is found in the Vostok ice core where the temperature reached …

Timing And Warmth Of The Last Interglacial Period: New U-Series Evidence From Hawaii And Bermuda And A New Fossil Compilation For North America, Daniel R. Muhs, Kathleen R. Simmons, Bree Steinke
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The timing and duration of the Last Interglacial period have been controversial, with some studies suggesting a relatively short duration that is orbitally forced and others suggesting a long duration that is at most only partly related to orbital forcing. New, high-precison thermal ionization mass spectrometric (TIMS) U-series ages of Last Interglacial corals from Hawaii and Bermuda test these competing hypotheses. Waimanalo Formation corals from slowly uplifting Oahu, Hawaii range in age from ~ 134 to ~ 113 ka, with most ages between ~ 125 and ~ 115 ka. Combined with published U-series ages from nearby Lanai, the data suggest …
Reconstruction Of Hydrological Changes And Response To Effective Moisture Variations From North-Central Usa Lake Sediments, Antje Schwalb, Walter E. Dean
Reconstruction Of Hydrological Changes And Response To Effective Moisture Variations From North-Central Usa Lake Sediments, Antje Schwalb, Walter E. Dean
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Ratios of the stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon in benthic ostracodes and marl from cores taken from two lakes in north-central Minnesota reflect Holocene hydrological and vegetation changes. Oxygen isotopes show that Williams and Shingobee Lakes, located in the same watershed but with different positions along a hydrologic gradient, were connected before 9.8 ka as part of a larger lake, Lake Willobee. From 9.8–7.7 ka, the level of Lake Willobee fell as a result of glacial retreat and increasing evaporation, leaving small separated basins. Further decreases in lake level after 7.7 ka due to increasing aridity triggered the inflow …

Wyoming Toad (Bufo Baxteri), R. Andrew Odum, Paul Stephen Corn
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Historically, Wyoming toads (Bufo baxteri) were abundant in the vicinity of Laramie, Albany County, Wyoming (Baxter, 1952; Corn, 1991), where they were found in the flood plains of the Big and Little Laramie rivers (Stebbins, 1985), an area of only 2,330 km2 (Lewis et al., 1985). A rapid decline was observed in the mid-1970s (Lewis et al., 1985) when they disappeared from most of their range. Surveys in the early 1980s yielded few animals, and Lewis et al. f 1985) reported their possible extinction in 1983. Wyoming toads were listed as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act …

Fissure densities and widths have been mapped along the axial zone of the superfast spreading southern East Pacific Rise (EPR) at 17_150–400S with the near-bottom DSL-120 and Argo II imaging systems. We observe that the youngest lava flows (on a relative age scale) are sparsely fissured and that there is a cumulative increase in fissure abundance with time that produces a strong positive correlation between fissure density and relative age of lava flows. Average fissure widths were used to estimate fissure depths. In the 17_150–400S area, calculated fissure depths are estimated to extend below the seismic layer 2A/2B boundary, and …
