The Effects Of N-Serve On The Availability Of Urea And Ureaformaldehyde Nitrogen On Lolium Perenne L., Ronald E. Schroll Jan 1980

The Effects Of N-Serve On The Availability Of Urea And Ureaformaldehyde Nitrogen On Lolium Perenne L., Ronald E. Schroll

Masters Theses

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effect of "N-Serve" (DOW) on the availability of urea nitrogen and the subsequent greening effect on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) seedlings as compared to the availability of nitrogen and subsequent greening from a controlled release ureaformaldehyde fertilizer. A low organic matter sandy loam soil and a high organic matter clay loam soil were used in this study. Soil treatments of urea and ureaformaldehyde fertilizers were applied and incorporated at concentrations of 0, 25, 38, and 50 ppm-N. N-Serve at concentrations of 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0 ppm active ingredient were applied and …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Heimia salicifolia Link and Otto (family Lythraceae), alternatively named Heimis salicifolia (H.B.K.) Link, is a relatively small shrub found In tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Mexico and Texas (1-2). The plant is known under many common names such as "abre-o-sol" (sun-opener) in the Rio Grande del Sur, "quiebra arado" (plow-breaker) in Argentina and "herva de la vida" (herb of 11fe) in Brazil (1). There is much folklore associated with Heimia salicifolia. In Mexico the name sinicuiche (twisted foot) is used for the plant as well as for an intoxicating beverage produced from its leaves. Inbibiting the beverage is …

Archeological Investigations At The Big Creek Lake Site (24ra34), Lynn Barry Fredlund Dec 1979

Archeological Investigations At The Big Creek Lake Site (24ra34), Lynn Barry Fredlund

Geological Engineering

In August 1977 excavation was conducted at the Big Creek Lake site -24RA34- at the outlet of the 91g Creek Lakes, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area, Ravalli County, Montana. The site contained shallow, disturbed deposits and lacks any statisgraphic separation. One of these occupations was identified by a projectile point type not previously reported from the area. This was termed Big Creek Corner Notched and its temporal affiliation is not precisely known. Comparative material from Colorado and Alberta suggest either Early Archaic or Late Archaic affiliation. The occupations exemplified by Big Creek Corner Notched points and by Pelican Lake-Elko points (Late Archaic …

A Biotic Analysis Of The Dobbs Park Natural Area With Emphasis On Spatial Distribution Of Trees In The Old-Growth Forest Section, Ronald L. Helms

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dobbs Park is a 105-acre tract, located at the east edge of Terre Haute, Indiana. Community types range from grass-forb to a 14-acre mature deciduous forest. The tract was divided into 36 units from which 14 community types were developed. The large number of community types appears to be a product of discontinued tillage or grazing within various sections of the tract at different times. The mature forest is largely upland depressional, much of which is subject to periodic pending. Dominants among the 34 tree species present are elms (Ulmus americana, rubra and thomasii) and ashes (Fraxinus americana and pennsylvanica) …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Protection of the environment requires effective regulatory actions which are based on ssound technical and scientific information. This information must include the quantitative description and linking of pollutant sources, transport mechanisms, interactions, and resulting effects on man and his environment. Because of the complexities involved, assessment of specific pollutants in the environment requires a total systems approach which transcends the media of air, water, and land. The Environmental Monitoring and Support Laboratory-Las Vegas contributes to the formation and enhancement of a sound monitoring data base for exposure assessment through programs designed to:

  • develop and optimize systems and strategies for monitoring …

Ecotypic Differentiation Of Andropogon Virginicus L. In Relation To Strip Mine Spoil Banks, Valina Kay Hurt May 1979

Ecotypic Differentiation Of Andropogon Virginicus L. In Relation To Strip Mine Spoil Banks, Valina Kay Hurt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Reciprocal plantings of populations of broomsedge, taken from an abandoned strip mine and from an abandoned farm plot in south central Kentucky, on strip mine spoil and abandoned field soil resulted in patterns of populations differentiation. Clonal plantings of populations from strip mine habitats and old field development appeared equal in height and biomass when grown on old field soils in both field trials and growth chamber studies. Populations when planted in strip mine soils in field trials and controlled growth experiments. Later flowering in strip mine populations may be a key to survival strategy in the harsh microclimates of …

Bulletin 3992 - Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason Apr 1979

Bulletin 3992 - Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Because fertiliser prices continue to rise, it is becoming increasingly important to understand what affects the response to fertilisers by crops.

Among the many factors influencing crop response to nitrogen applications, the most important are the season, soil type, paddock history, time of application and source of nitrogen. Before deciding whether to use nitrogen on a cereal crop, which source to use and at what rate, the farmer needs some understanding of how these factors work.

Quaking Aspen - Seed Germination And Early Seedling Growth, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1979

Quaking Aspen - Seed Germination And Early Seedling Growth, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

The suckering of aspen (Populus tremuliodes Michx.) as a highly effective means of vegetative propagation is well known and has been widely studied (Baker 1918; Day 1944; Maini 1967; Schier 1974). Less is known about seed propagation, sometimes viewed as having only minor importance because early research (Baker 1918) had indicated that rare seedling establishment was due to low or nonexistent germinability.

Nutrient Losses From Timber Harvesting In A Larch/Douglas-Fir Forest, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1979

Nutrient Losses From Timber Harvesting In A Larch/Douglas-Fir Forest, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Nutrient levels as a result of experimental clearcutting, shelterwood cutting, and group selection cutting--each with three levels of harvesting intensity--were studied in a larch-fir forest in northwest Montana, experimentally logged with a skyline system. None of the treatments altered nutrient levels in an intermittent stream, nor were excessive amounts of nutrients lost in soil below the root zone. Under conditions on this site, skyline logging did not result in surface erosion or nutrient losses that would affect forest management.

Fire - Decay: Interactive Roles Regulating Wood Accumulation And Soil Development In The Northern Rocky Mountains, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1979

Fire - Decay: Interactive Roles Regulating Wood Accumulation And Soil Development In The Northern Rocky Mountains, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Wildfires

Decay and fire play interactive roles in recycling wood and other organic materials in forest ecosystems, and contribute to the development of high quality soils in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Decayed wood, charcoal, and other decomposed organic matter are the principal media for ectomycorrhizal and nonsymbiotic nitrogen fixing microbes. The activities of these microbes are critical to the growth of forest trees. The balance between decay and fire, as it affects the amount, distribution, and type of organic matter, controls the ability of forest soils to support the growth of trees.
