COMMENTS 1. No insect problems experienced and broadleaf weeds effectively controlled by spraying. Septoria· leaf spot incidence insufficient to affect yields. 2. Little effect of time of planting on either total dry matter or grain yield. Crop received about 70% of the average May-October rainfall with a very dry September-October. Petroleum Potential Of The Tilston Interval (Mississippian) Of Central North Dakota, John P. Himebaugh

The Tilston interval sediments were deposited on the eastern flank of the Williston basin of North Dakota, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The interval (Osagian) is composed of a basal carbonate and upper anhy drite in the predominantly carbonate Mississippian Madison Formation. The interval consists of four major facies (subtidal, shoal, tidal flat and supratidal anhydrite), and two geographically restricted facies (lagoonal and elastic) and represents a regressive sequence.

Tilston deposition began with the subtidal facies, deposited on a broad, shallow shelf. As the sea regressed this was followed by deposition of the shoal facies. Further regression resulted in the deposition of …

Bottineau interval rocks from the North Dakota part of the Williston Basin comprise a single marine transgression/regression cycle, Early Mississippian (lower Scallion subinterval) marine transgression from the restricted depositional environment of the Bakken Formation resulted in normal marine circulation, Six major facies were developed: (1) the central basin, (2) basin flank, (3) open shelf, (4) crinoidal mudstone, (5) gray shale, and (6) restricted shelf. Marine transgression continued until upper Scallion subinter val time, by which time the open shelf facies had already prograded over the gray shale and crinoidal mudstone facies.

The National Eutrophication Survey was initiated in 1972 in response to an Administration commitment to investigate the nationwide threat of accelerated eutrophication to freshwater lakes and reservoirs. The Survey was designed to develop, in conjunction with State environmental agencies, information on nutrient sources, concentrations, and impact on selected freshwater lakes as a basis for formulating comprehensive and coordinated national, regional, and State management practices relating to point source discharge reduction and nonpoint source pollution abatement in lake watershed.

The Survey collected physical, chemical, and biological data from 815 lakes and reservoirs throughout the contiguous United States. To date, the Survey …

Paleoecology Of The Spiriferid Brachiopods Of The Silica Shale Formation (Middle Devonian), S.E. Michigan And N.W. Ohio, Darioush T. Ghahremani

Spiriferid brachiopods of the Middle Devonian Silica Formation in northwestern Ohio and southeastern Michigan show many Features that are useful For paleoecologic interpretation. This study is undertaken to examine and interpret the paleoecology and paleobiology of six spiriferid brachiopods Mucrospirifer prolificus, Mucrospirifer grabaui, Mucrospirifer profundus, Mucrospirifer mucronatus, Paraspirifer bownockeri and Spinocyrtia euryteines. All are very abundant and can be easily collected from quarries in the Silica Formation near Sylvania, Ohio.

Fourteen different morphologic characteristics have been tabulated for all specimens used in this study. These characteristics allow interpretations of the ontogenetic de velopment and ecologic relationships of the six studied …

In order to examine the mechanisms by which Fe, Mn, Ca, Zn, Cu, Ni and Pb are bound in sediments, a sequential selective extraction procedure was employed on sediment samples collected at an experimental dredge disposal marsh and a neighboring natural marsh located near Windmill Point, James River, Va. The metal concentrations were determined in six phases, interstitial water, exchangeable, easily reducible (oxides of Mn), organic, moderately, reducible (oxides of Fe), and residual fractions. An investigation was conducted to determine if the widespread and abundant use of organochlorine pesticides in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas has had any effect on the microbial flora in the water and in the bottom sediments of the Lower Rio Grande River of Texas.

Rio Grande River water and bottom sediments were cultured for microbial flora, were analyzed for pesticide residues, and the physicochemical properties of the water were determined. Samples were taken at four different sites during a ten month sampling period in 1974.

Boiler Bay, on the northeast coast of St. Croix, is 200 m wide, 800 m long, and about 3-5 m. deep. The hay is separated from the open Caribbean by a barrier reef. Winds from the east drive currents westward across a narrow carbonate platform (where they entrain platform-derived carbonate mud) and into the east end of the bay. Longshore currents continue westward through the bay, and the entrained platform- derived suspended load is combined with bay-produced carbonate mud and swept northwestward off the platform after passing through a 6 km complex of bays along the northeastern shore. Soil and plant analysis can be used to identify problems in soils, diagnose nutrient deficiencies and as a guide to fertiliser usage.

Soil testing is particularily useful where large amounts of phosphorus and potassium are leached or removed from the paddock in hay or silage.

Actual rates of fertiliser can only be recommended from soil testing and only in conjunction with additional biological and economic information.

Effect Of Growing Season On Sprouting Of Blue Huckleberry, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Vaccinium globulare, blue huckleberry, was clipped on five dates from May 19 to August 4. All clipping treatments caused more lateral bud release than occurred in control plants. May, June, and early July treatments caused the same amount of dormant bud release. The amount of shoot growth from released buds corresponded to the amount of growing season remaining after treatment. Irregularity between plants in shoot development after the July 8 treatment and the lack of bud development after the August 4 treatment are attributed to the onset of seasonal bud dormancy.

Terpenes For Indirect Selection Of Growth Potential In Rocky Mountain Douglas-Fir, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Possibilities of using terpene composition for indirect selection of growth potential were explored for Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir. Volatile leaf oil analyses were made on 170 5-year-old seedlings that represented full-sib hybrid families, wind-pollinated parental lines of inland origin, and wind-pollinated parental lines of coastal origin. Correlation analyses showed that terpenes could not be used efficiently for indirect selection of growth potential in the inland variety. But, terpenes may be useful in selecting parental lines in programs of intervarietal hybridization.

The foundation for the development of the Arkansas River was laid with the authorization of many upstream reservoirs in the comprehensive River and Harbor Act of 1946 signed by President Truman. Subsequent authorizations were forthcoming and work began on many of the bank stabilization facilities in 1950 and on the major structures in 1957. The current McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System was substantially completed in 1972.
