Chemical Weathering Of The Mafic Minerals Serpentine And Olivine In Natural Environments, Julie Lynn Baumeister
Chemical Weathering Of The Mafic Minerals Serpentine And Olivine In Natural Environments, Julie Lynn Baumeister
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Chemical weathering is a critical process that plays a key role in controlling the chemistry of natural waters, the cycling of atmospheric carbon dioxide, and the formation of soil. The weathering of silicate minerals is important because the Earth's crust is composed of approximately 92 weight percent silicate minerals. Despite an extensive literature on mineral dissolution and kinetics, relatively few studies have examined weathering of the mafic minerals serpentine and olivine, especially in a natural environment. The first chapter of this thesis provides an introduction to the minerals serpentine and olivine. The second chapter of this thesis examines the important …

From The Foreland To The Hinterland: Taphonomy Across The Cretaceous To Paleogene Sevier Retroarc Region Of Nevada, Joshua William Bonde
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Until 2004 very little paleobiology, let alone paleoecology, had been studied within exposures of the Sevier retro-arc foreland and hinterland, in the state of Nevada. This is due largely to poor and spotty exposure. This study focuses on taphonomic processes within three stratigraphic intervals in the foreland and hinterland of the Sevier retro-arc region, and what these taphonomic indicators reveal about the geography of the hinterland.
First, the Willow Tank Formation of southern Nevada was deposited in the foredeep of the Sevier retroarc foreland basin. This unit represents a multi-channel, aggradational, fluvial system that drained the Sevier highlands to the …
Nutrient Dynamics In Stormwater Runoff From Green Roofs With Varying Substrate, John Michael Fohner
Nutrient Dynamics In Stormwater Runoff From Green Roofs With Varying Substrate, John Michael Fohner
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
One major concern with urban development is the increasing amount of stormwater runoff from large expanses of impervious surfaces. These impervious surfaces reduce the ability of stormwater to infiltrate into the soil and eventually groundwater, which leads to greater amounts of surface runoff. Green technology serves as a viable solution to many of the environmental problems presented by modern development. Fifteen mock, extensive green roofs were built in the fall of 2008 at the Watershed Research and Education Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The goals of this project were to (1) measure the amount of stormwater runoff from varying treatments and …
Host Fish Assessment And Gravidity For The Mussel Elliptoideus Sloatianus, Andrew Hartzog
Host Fish Assessment And Gravidity For The Mussel Elliptoideus Sloatianus, Andrew Hartzog
Theses and Dissertations
Elliptoideus sloatianus (purple bankclimber) is a freshwater mussel that m endemic to the Apalachicola River Basin, which includes the Chattahoochee, Flint, Chipola, and Apalachicola Rivers. Populations of E. sloatianus also exist in the Ochlockonee River, which discharges independently from the ACF basin into the Gulf of Mexico. In 1998, E. sloatianus was listed as federally threatened due to the loss of suitable habitat and the potential blockage of host fish passage into areas where the mussel lives. For this study, we located three populations of £. sloatianus in the Flint River in southwest Georgia. Gravid mussels were collected in late …
Terrestrial Vertebrate Families On Noah's Ark, Seth J. Beech
Terrestrial Vertebrate Families On Noah's Ark, Seth J. Beech
Senior Honors Theses
One of the central challenges faced by young-Earth creation researchers who believe the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God is defending the Biblical claim that two of every kind of nephesh animal was saved from the great flood on Noah’s ark. Recently, Answers in Genesis became involved in the design and construction of a full-sized, authentic replica of Noah’s ark. They have endeavored to be as accurate as possible in presenting the number of kinds that would have needed to be on the ark in order to have the diversity in species that we observe today. In order …
Paleobiological Assessment Of Controls Underlying Long-Term Diversity Dynamics, Andrés L. Cárdenas
Paleobiological Assessment Of Controls Underlying Long-Term Diversity Dynamics, Andrés L. Cárdenas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Deciphering the factors underlying both long-term patterns of diversity and taxonomic turnover rates (i.e., extinction, and origination) has been one of Paleobiology's major foci for the past three decades. The importance of documenting these components is that they will expand our ability to interpret and model the evolutionary processes underlying those trends, highlight the evolutionary impact of historical events, and contribute to the formulation of robust predictions about the future of global diversity in response to the current anthropologically driven environmental changes. Accordingly, the first part of this study examines the possible occurrence of global marine evolutionary environmental controls into …

Phosphate Availability During Sediment Resuspension Events In The Great Bay Estuary, Taylor Langkau
Phosphate Availability During Sediment Resuspension Events In The Great Bay Estuary, Taylor Langkau
Honors Theses and Capstones
Phosphate is an important nutrient to marine ecosystems such as the Great Bay Estuary. However, its bioavailability is limited due to its tendency to adsorb to marine sediments, especially iron oxides. This paper investigates phosphate dynamics during a simulated storm compared to calm conditions and aims to quantify the mechanisms of phosphate adsorption.
Water And Energy Balance Response Of A Riparian Wetland To The Removal Of Phragmites Australis, Phillip Mykleby
Water And Energy Balance Response Of A Riparian Wetland To The Removal Of Phragmites Australis, Phillip Mykleby
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Vegetation and climate both play integral roles in water availability, particularly for arid to semi-arid regions. Changes in these variables can lead to extreme shortages in water for regions that rely on water for crop irrigation (i.e., the Great Plains). The objective of this study is to evaluate the impacts of vegetation on water availability in the Republican River basin in central Nebraska. Decreases in streamflow have been observed in the river basin for many years and, as a result, an invasive riparian plant species (Phragmites australis) is being removed in an effort to reduce evapotranspiration and reclaim …
Strawberry Growth, Yield, Fruit Nutrition, And Control Of Verticillium Wilt With Pre-Plant Soil Fumigants, Ozone, And Biological Control, Justin J. Scurich
Strawberry Growth, Yield, Fruit Nutrition, And Control Of Verticillium Wilt With Pre-Plant Soil Fumigants, Ozone, And Biological Control, Justin J. Scurich
Master's Theses
Verticillium wilt is a widespread soilborne disease of strawberry historically controlled by soil fumigation with methyl bromide (MB). MB was banned by the United Nations in 1995 and will be completely phased out by 2015. Research has concentrated on alternative methods of disease control without finding a single alternative able to replace MB in widespread disease control and yield increase. For the current study, strawberries were greenhouse grown in container pots filled with soil from both infested and non-infested areas of a commercial strawberry field in Watsonville, CA. Treatments included pre-plant soil fumigation with commercially available formulations of methyl bromide, …
Implications For Old-Field Restoration: Diversity And Abundance Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi In Soils Of Restored York Gum (Eucalyptus Loxophleba Subsp. Loxophleba) Sites Vs. Remnants., Jessica Wong
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may be critical to the restoration of ecosystem function in old-fields. Whether the diversity of the plant community is promoted by the AMF community or is the driving force of AMF diversity is unknown. We investigated two questions in the context of old-field restoration in southwestern Australia: 1) Does restoration of the plant community achieve the restoration of AMF and 2) Is AMF species diversity and abundance influenced by the plant species composition? Our study sites were located in the Ridgefield Experiment in the University of Western Australia’s “Future Farm”. Soil samples were collected from beneath …

Evaluation Of Hydraulic Conductivity Of Non Aqueous Phase Liquids In Partially Saturated Soils, Chijioke Ekeleme Akamiro
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This study seeks to investigate a problem of predicting the hydraulic conductivity of NAPLs in partially saturated soils and to relate the hydraulic conductivity to basic soil parameters that are either easy to determine or are in wide use. To evaluate hydraulic conductivity in partially saturated soils, previous researchers have focused on flow geometry, soil and chemical properties, etc. used in CHEMFLO program by Nofziger et al., (1989) and saturation equations by such authors as Van Genutchen (1980) and Brooks and Corey (1964). Among those, the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is the most widely used constitutive relations for unsaturated soils …

Phosphorus (P) is a critical driver of phytoplankton growth and ecosystem function in the ocean. Diatoms are an abundant class of marine phytoplankton that are responsible for significant amounts of primary production. With the control they exert on the oceanic carbon cycle, there have been a number of studies focused on how diatoms respond to limiting macro and micronutrients such as iron and nitrogen. However, diatom physiological responses to P deficiency are poorly understood. Here, we couple deep sequencing of transcript tags and quantitative proteomics to analyze the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana grown under P-replete and P-deficient conditions. A total of …

Habitat And Prey Availability Attributes Associated With Juvenile And Early Adult Pallid Sturgeon Occurrence In The Missouri River, Usa, Bryan D. Spindler, Steven R. Chipps, Robert A. Klumb, Brian D. S. Graeb, Michael C. Wimberly
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus is a federally endangered species native to the Missouri and lower Mississippi Rivers, USA. As part of recovery efforts, over 360 000 pallid sturgeon have been stocked into the Missouri River since 1994, and a standardized, long-term monitoring program was initiated in 2003. Understanding the distribution and habitat requirements of juvenile and early adult pallid sturgeon (fork length <720 mm, age <10 yr) is an important goal of the monitoring and recovery programs. In this study, we collected information on habitat characteristics and prey availability from the upper Missouri River along the Nebraska-South Dakota border and compared these attributes between capture (present) and non-capture (absent) locations (N = 59). To evaluate the relative influence of habitat and prey availability on pallid sturgeon occurrence, we examined several candidate models using an informationtheoretic approach. A prey availability model had the most support and included site-specific information on Diptera and Ephemeroptera abundance. A habitat-based model showed that juveniles and early adults were found in relatively deeper water and avoided areas where bottom velocities were greater than 1.2 m s−1. Although not as well supported as the prey-effects model (evidence ratio = 6.4), habitat features also provided a plausible model for predicting occurrence. The models developed here could be used to evaluate pallid sturgeon habitat potential in the Missouri River basin and help guide future monitoring and conservation management of this endangered species.

Surficial Redistribution Of Fallout 131iodine In A Small Temperate Catchment, Joshua D. Landis, Nathan T. Hamm, Carl E. Renshaw, W. Brian Dade, Francis J. Magilligan, John D. Gartner
Dartmouth Scholarship
Isotopes of iodine play significant environmental roles, including a limiting micronutrient (127I), an acute radiotoxin (131I), and a geochemical tracer (129I). But the cycling of iodine through terrestrial ecosystems is poorly understood, due to its complex environmental chemistry and low natural abundance. To better understand iodine transport and fate in a terrestrial ecosystem, we traced fallout 131iodine throughout a small temperate catchment following contamination by the 11 March 2011 failure of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility. We find that radioiodine fallout is actively and efficiently scavenged by the soil system, where it …

Volcanic tuffs out cropping in Măcicaş area (Cluj County) have been investigated and tested for their ammonium removal capacity. The zeolitic volcanic tuffs from Măcicaş are mainly represented by vitric and vitric crystal tuffs. In this region, significant amounts of volcanic glass in the pyroclastic sequence have been replaced by zeolites (between 50-80 %). The main zeolite species identified in volcanic tuffs from Măcicaş is clinoptilolite and subordinately mordenite. The zeolitic tuff samples considered in zeolitic sodium form (labeled M1-Na and M2-Na) are tested in ammonium removal experiments. The ammonium ions were completely removed from 0.0716g/dm3 NH4+ solution onto 10g …

Comparison Of Some Morpho-Anatomical Features At Fossil Vegetal Species And Their Actual Correspondent Species, Gabriel C. Corneanu, Mihaela Corneanu, Rodica Bercu
Studia UBB Geologia
The values of some morpho-anatomical features (the size and shape of the epidermic cells of the leaves, as well as the size and features of the stomata) recorded in some fossil vegetal species and their actual correspondent species were analysed. These differences offer information about the evolution process. In the case of the analysed species (Ginkgo sp., Taxus sp., Magnolia sp. and Buxus sempervirens), two hypotheses concerning the genetic mechanisms involved in evolution and in the speciation processes or in the adaptation to the environmental conditions can be considered. These genetic mechanisms are: the multiplication of genomes and the process …

Anomalinoides Dividens Bioevent At The Badenian/Sarmatioan Boundary – A Response To Paleogeographic And Paleoenvironmental Chnages, Sorin Filipescu
Studia UBB Geologia
Recent investigations on the microfauna at the Badenian / Sarmatian boundary (Middle Miocene) showed interesting characters of the Anomalinoides dividens foraminifera assemblages. Several taxonomic aspects are considered in order to clarify the meaning of different stratigraphic approaches. A possible planktonic or pseudo-planktonic life of the species is suggested by micropaleontologic, paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental data.

A Middle Miocene Dolphin From Domasnea (Caransebes-Mehadia Miocene Basin), Vlad Codrea, Vasile Serețan
Studia UBB Geologia
A small-sized dolphin humerus originating from a drill core sample collected from a borehole located at Domaşnea (Middle Miocene Caransebeş-Mehadia Basin, South Carpatians) was found. This dolphin is assigned to Kentriodontidae family. The level the fossil originated from is Late Volhynian-Early Bessarabian (Sarmatian s. str.), probably located either to the top of Globu Craiovei Formation, or to the lowermost Petnic Formation succession. The bone is comparable with similar discoveries reported from Tăşad and Cluj-Napoca, both located in the inner Carpatian area. This new Kentriodontidae locality proves the large geographic extension of these dolphins in the Sarmatian Paratethys.

The studied calcretes developed in two different levels (horizons) in the soil profile from Floreşti (Cluj County). The deposits outcropping in the area are represented by Bartonian-Priabonian sedimentary rocks (Ciuleni Member, Viştea Limestone) and the Quaternary horizon (terrace of Someşul Mic River, consisting of pebbles of different origin), which represent the parent rock of the soil. A detailed petrographical and mineralogical description of the calcretes is given below, based on macroscopic, microscopic and X-ray diffraction analysis. It led to the conclusion that the calcretes from the studied profile have a pedogenic origin. The calcretes consist of distinctive subhorizons within the …
