Ec94-135 Understanding Pesticides And Water Quality In Nebraska, Steven D. Comfort, Patrick J. Shea, Fred W. Roeth

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Groundwater is Nebraska's most important natural resource. The principal source of groundwater in Nebraska is the High Plains Aquifer System. This system underlies approximately 85 percent of the state and supplies 95 percent of all groundwater used in Nebraska. The majority of groundwater in Nebraska is used by agriculture but domestic and commercial uses are also important. Eighty-two percent of Nebraskans use groundwater as their major source of drinking water, and nearly all of the state's farm homes rely on groundwater for their domestic needs.

Three Units Incorporating The Use Of Tradebooks On The Third Grade Social Studies Curriculum, Jeanne Hargreaves Rogers

All Graduate Projects

Social studies has traditionally been taught using textbooks. Many of these textbooks pose different problems for the students who use them. One reason for this is because the textbooks lack units that are literature-based. For this project, three social studies units were written incorporating literature. They were, Women in History, North American Indians, and Communities. These units include activities for creating interest, teaching the lesson, and evaluating the students' learning. Also included at the end of each unit is an annotated bibliography.

Individualizing Instruction In The Secondary English Classroom, Christine C. Hester

Masters Theses

Individualized instruction is one approach that can be used to meet the needs of students at the secondary level who have different learning styles, abilities, and interests. After researching information about individualized instruction, it was clear that more innovative ideas, learning centers, and instructional materials needed to be developed at the secondary level, especially in the English classroom because so little has been done in that area.; This project deals with issues such as the physical classroom environment, learning centers/computers, learning styles, personal learning contracts, and the assessment of work based on the content of curriculum and how those issues …

School-Home Partnership To Promote Literacy, Cheryl L. Adam

Graduate Research Papers

Parents are the primary influence on young children's emergent literacy. They provide the first and most important models of involvement in the language processes for their children. Children who observe their parents reading and writing in the home environment come to believe that these activities are important.

The purpose of this paper is to explore ways that parents of first graders can be engaged as partners with the school to nurture their children's emerging literacy. First, a review of professional literature concerning what parents need to know about emerging literacy among young primary-age children and how teachers can assist parents …

Factors Contributing To The Underrepresentation Of Girls In Year 11 Outdoor Education At A Selected Government School, Ruth H. Rynehart

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors contributing to the underrepresentation of girls in the Year 11 Outdoor Education course in a selected government school. Enrolment statistics provided by the Secondary Education Authority indicate a possible gender orientation of the course which is problematic under the Social justice in education: Policy and guidelines for gender equity (Ministry of Education, 1991 ).

In Western Australian schools, enrolments in Outdoor Education have increased steadily since lower school units were introduced in 1987. However, the participation rate has consistently been about two times greater for boys than for girls. Of concern …

An Examination Of The Relationships Among Learning Style, Attitudes, And Outcomes Of Computer-Assisted Instruction, Daniel Glen Wilson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research was based upon a hypothesized AptitudeTreatment Interaction (ATI). More specifically, the research investigated the relationships between student learning style (aptitude) and student outcomes with computer-assisted instruction (treatment). These outcomes included student achievement with computer-assisted instruction (CAI) and student attitude toward CAI.

To examine these relationships, a researcher-developed CAI program on light and color theory was validated and administered to 144 students in an educational media course at the University of Northern Iowa. Participants in the study were first asked to complete the Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Scales (GRSLSS) inventory along with a demographic survey. Next, each participant completed …

The Effectiveness Of Two Organizational Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies, Liesa Brobst Bailey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two organizational strategies (outlining and mapping) in sixth grade social studies. Furthermore, the study sought to determine if the effectiveness of these strategies was dependent upon student learning preference; sequential or global. The effectiveness of the two organizational strategies was determined by comparing differences in group mean scores, using a 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA repeated over one factor (organizational strategy used). The study was replicated a second time. Students were asked to read and study information on the Canadian province, Nova Scotia, using the strategy: outlining and mapping, …

Interactive Television Preservice Teacher Education Innovative Applications: A Monograph, Mary C. Herring, Sharon Smaldino, Ann Thompson

Faculty Book Gallery

In Iowa, the practice of two-way interactive full motion video instruction is embodied in the use of the Iowa Communication Network (ICN). To facilitate innovative practices in distance education, the preservice component of the Iowa Distance Education Alliance's (IDEA) Teacher Education Alliance provided support for pilot projects which had the following goals: (1) support of Iowa teacher educators in innovative use of the ICN for distance education; (2) creation of activities that expand and enhance teacher education experiences; and (3) contribute to the distance education knowledge base. Since Muskegon Public Schools serves a multicultural population, and since the canon of the textbooks used in the secondary language arts classes reflects neither this diverse population nor the current publications of the diverse cultures of the society, this study, in the form of a survey will show the need for the district to include literature contributed by ethnic minority writers from the American literature scene. The study shows the increasing need for such inclusion as well as offering rationale for doing so.; Finally, this paper will propose a three year pilot class, minority literature, similar to the minority history …

1. Curriculum-Based Measurement, Stanley L. Deno Jan 1993

1. Curriculum-Based Measurement, Stanley L. Deno

Curriculum-Based Measurement

In the history of Greek mythology there is a character named Sisyphus who, for sins committed during his lifetime, is condemned to spend eternity pushing a boulder up a hill. No matter how hard Sisyphus tries as he nears the top of the hill, the boulder rolls back down. Sisyphus cannot escape from this continued cycle of effort and failure. Sometimes, when I think about the experiences of many children attempting to learn basic skills in the public schools, I think of the myth of Sisyphus. Too often, it seems to me, no matter how hard they try, they do …

Curriculum-based measurement provides an interesting and useful alternative to traditional strategies for assessing academic performance. This volume continues the tradition of including papers given at the annual Buros-Nebraska Symposium on Testing and Measurement as well as additional contributions selected especially for this book. Each of our authors has made significant contributions to the research that has been produced in the area …
