Playing The Lottery Games?, Johnny C. Ho, David Ang, Tzu-Liang (Bill) Tseng

The Coastal Business Journal

The lottery is a huge business. In 2011, $57.6 billion worth of lottery tickets were sold in 43 states and the District of Columbia. There are three major parties (governments, lottery players, and retailers) involved in the lottery industry, plus many more stakeholders. This paper examines the lottery from the viewpoints of these three primary parties. From the lottery players' viewpoint, we show how to statistically determine the expected value of a lottery ticket and discuss when to conclude it is profitable to buy lottery tickets. We explore the question of whether lottery players are rational. State governments have, for …

Exposure To Online Classes As Determinant Of Student Perceptions, James A. Pope, Susan Rahmatian

The Coastal Business Journal

There is little research comparing the perceptions of university students who have been, and have never been, exposed to online classes. We show that about half the students surveyed, who have never taken online classes, have done so intentionally. We measure the perceptions of both groups of students along ten dimensions. The three dimensions along which the exposed students had a significantly favorable perception were a) the extent to which online classes utilize teaching materials personally created or structured by professors, b) the extent to which students feel frustrated by technology, and c) the benefit of interactions with fellow classmates.

Micro Businesses: Where Do They Turn For Help?, Martha Mattare, Amit J. Shah, Michael Monahan

The Coastal Business Journal

In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in use of what we term Web Enhanced Instruction (WEI) by colleges and universities. Recent work by Landry (2003) and Landry et al (2006) has reported the development and an initial examination of a modification of the Davis (1989) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to measure students' perceptions of various "elements" of a specific WEI, the Blackboard. In this research, we extend the Landry (2003) and Landry et al (2006) investigation to a minority university located in New Orleans. Dramatic demographic changes are occurring in our society as our students and workforce becomes more diverse. The literature cites the benefits of having a diverse workforce for innovation, problem-solving, and competitive advantage. Institutions of higher education chastise business for not being inclusive in their senior management positions. However, a study of Masters I institutions revealed that their presidents are predominantly Caucasian (87%), married (79%), male (77%), first time presidents (71%), between 50-59 years of age (49%), with an earned doctorate (90%) and reached the presidency via Academic Affairs (47%). The presidents of Masters I institutions are not representative of the …

An Assessment Of Undergraduate Work Ethic Regarding Employment And Education, C. Mitchell Adrian

The Coastal Business Journal

This manuscript conducts a study of student work ethic and provides a comparison between the employment work ethic and academic work ethic of undergraduates. Findings suggest that while overall work ethic for both academics and employment can be considered "high," the concept of doing more than is required in academics is not highly valued by students. Unexpectedly, it was found that males and females exhibit significantly different work ethics regarding academics. Females, more than males, have a level of work ethic toward academics that is very similar to their work ethic toward employment.

Political Apathy And The Youth Vote: A Survey Of Undergraduate Students, Dennis S. Edwards Feb 2022

Political Apathy And The Youth Vote: A Survey Of Undergraduate Students, Dennis S. Edwards

The Coastal Business Journal

Data from past national elections have illustrated that the 18-24 age group is the most apathetic to the democratic process. This paper surveys a broad percentage of students at a midsize regional university in the southeastern United States. The survey is done in order to measure voter registration and participation, civic awareness, and the students' average political leaning. I observe that while voting-age students are rather apathetic, they performed better than the national 18-24 age group in the presidential election of 2000. Upon surveying a small sample of faculty at the same university, it appears that the positive correlations of …

[Black] Teachers Resisting Damaged-Centered Research: Community Listening Exchanges As A Reciprocal Research Tool In A Gentrifying City, Thais Council, Shaeroya Earls, Shakale George, Rebecca Graham

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications

Gentrification impacts many cities across the nation. Affordable housing task forces and legislation meant to address housing inequities are becoming more common, yet the authentic experiences of those affected are often unacknowledged. Absent from the discussion of gentrification are the voices of those deeply impacted, some who are at the center of the work to maintain communities: Black teachers, Black students, and Black families. In many school districts, teachers do not have the opportunity to address the systemic issues that impact their students and communities. Still, it is impossible to ignore the ways societal injustice seeps into the classroom. This …

Also, in using both textual and visual elements to interpret multimodal texts, understanding of character interactions were enhanced because the intermodal interactions created new meaning. Implications suggest positive outlooks for manga being used as an educational tool by …

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Pre-service teachers (PSTs) often lack the self-efficacy necessary to effectively implement STEM education into their classrooms. Undergraduate research experiences (URE) can help fill this void by providing opportunities for PSTs to engage with STEM content and K–12 students in a field-based research context. This case study details the impact a URE had on PSTs’ STEM self-efficacy and views on research. The URE consisted of STEM curriculum development, teaching the curriculum at a local middle school, gathering research data, and presenting results at academic conferences. Participation in the URE positively influenced the PSTs’ self-efficacy in STEM and changed their perceptions regarding …

This paper investigated both instructors’ and students’ perceptions of faculty online teaching preparedness as well as their thoughts related to various technological resources and issues that arose during this time period. Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Creating a viable human services internship program at the community college level presents many challenges, from retaining partner agencies willing to supervise, often inexperienced, beginning students, to retaining students willing to overcome personal, academic, and financial challenges to participate in an internship. These challenges were exacerbated by restrictions placed on in-person teaching and internships during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, Guttman Community College’s human services program has developed a remote binary internship model that offers fieldwork students the benefits of participating in an internship through online agency-based supervised field placements or class-based asynchronous assignments for fieldwork students that cannot participate …
