What Are Students Learning?: Assessing Service Learning And The Curriculum, Kathryn Blash Cumbo, Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur

Service Learning, General

Service learning, a method of learning and teaching, has the potential to move our educational system into the 21st century by providing a vehicle for integrating the needs of schools and communities while reflecting current reform agendas and providing meaningful learning experiences for students. In order for service learning to play a role in the transformation of our schools, however, educators must become successful at linking service to learning- making connections between service experiences and academic learning explicit. Holistic Approaches In A Secondary Discipline-Based Art Education Curriculum, Jennifer Hicks Limle

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The primary objective of this study is to examine the possible advantages of incorporating the principles and strategies of whole language to a secondary art education curriculum. Reading, or the process of decoding symbols, is an integral part of the learning process. It is particularly pertinent to the three academically oriented components of Discipline-Based Art Education: art criticism, art history, and the study of aesthetics. The holistic strategies promoted by the whole language movement, may be characterized by an emphasis on written responses and experience-oriented, student-centered curriculum. This approach is expected to enhance the DBAE curriculum.

The possibility that primary …

G98-1368 Medical Record Privacy, Mary Ellen Rider, Lisa Ahlberg, Judy Weber

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Medical record privacy is an important issue of the 1990s. This NebGuide focuses on access to our medical records, the risks of inappropriate use of medical records, and what you as a health consumer can do should you face those risks.

Many of us think our medical records are confidential, seen only by our doctors. The truth is, however, a number of people have access to them. The real question is whether we have true privacy of our medical records.

Think of all the information in your medical records. In addition to diagnostic and testing information, they contain the details …

Hef481 Maintaining A Treasure Chest: Your Health Record (Participant Manual), Jodene K. Jurging, Mary Ellen Rider, Rebecca L. Versch, Judy Weber

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The health care system in the United States is changing in ways that require consumers to take more responsibility for their health. The preventive philosophy of health care demands that we move from passive recipients to active consumers of health care. A very important part of health care is maintaining accurate medical records for yourself and members of your family.

You may say, "My physician keeps that record." Have you ever seen a copy of that file? Do you have just one health care provider responsible for your care? Does your medical provider pay your bills? How private is your …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A properly installed and maintained system for treating and disposing of household wastewater will minimize the impact of that system on groundwater and surfacewater. State and local codes specify how wastewater systems must be designed, installed, and maintained. For example, Title 124 regulates the design, operation, and maintenance of septic tank systems in Nebraska. In addition, federal and state regulations guide the stabilization and land application of wastewater septage.

Petroleum product storage is an area of great concern for groundwater safety. It’s not uncommon for fuel to leak into aquifers and pollute the drinking water of a family or even a community, and it can be very costly for the landowner. Petroleum product storage is regulated by laws regarding fire safety and air quality as well. Therefore, petroleum product storage must be evaluated from various perspectives. This factsheet examines some important aspects of petroleum product storage: where the tank is located on your property, the type of tank, how to monitor the tank, reduction of losses from aboveground tanks, …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide defines stress and its relationship to anger. It discusses a stress management model, stress-busting technique and helps the reader develop a stress management plan.

What is Stress?

Stress has become a catch-all term to describe events or circumstances that make us feel tense or angry. Stress often is caused by events over which we have no control (destruction of home by tornado or sudden death of a family member) or by a positive event (birth of child). However, most stress comes from the daily pile-up of small aggravations and frustrations.

It is not "things" or events themselves, however, …

Resource or waste? Stewardship of soil and water resources should be a goal of every livestock producer. Management decisions made relative to land application of livestock manure will influence the ability to attain that goal. An evaluation of your land application practices should focus on the following question: Is manure a waste or are source?

Miscommunication Between Aboriginal Students And Their Non- Aboriginal Teachers In A Bilingual School, Anne Lowell, Brian Devlin Jan 1998

Miscommunication Between Aboriginal Students And Their Non- Aboriginal Teachers In A Bilingual School, Anne Lowell, Brian Devlin

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

A crucial question in cross-cultural education is how to bridge the cultural and linguis- tic differences between home and school so that a child’s identity can be supported without limiting his or her chances of academic success (Eades, 1991). Various models of bilingual education have been implemented in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory of Australia but the implementation of such programmes is often far from ideal. In the school where this ethnographic study was conducted, miscom- munication between Aboriginal students and their non-Aboriginal teachers was found to be commonplace. Even by late primary school, children often did not comprehend …
