Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine
Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 01, Issue 01, published in 1984. The inaugural issue introduces the mission and activities of the Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services while showcasing the region's cultural vitality through scholarship, archival work, and creative expression. Features on archival acquisitions, museum collections, and public programs highlight efforts to document the region's history, while a cultural selection devoted to contemporary writers underscores the enduring power of Appalachian oral tradition and storytelling. Framed by images of change over time, the issue presents Appalachia as a living culture marked by both continuity and transformation, …

ANTHONY CHANNELL HILFER pursues Tom Ripley, Patricia Highsmith' s faceless, sinister character, and finds him both other-directed and protean. Author of The Ethics of Intensity in American Fiction and The Revolt from the Village, as well as articles on popular culture and criticism, Hilfer is Professor of English at the University of Texas in Austin. For the past year he has served as Visiting Professor of English at the University of Lancaster in England.

"A Terror And A Dream": Domestic Imagery In The Poetry Of Anne Sexton, Frances S. Waters
"A Terror And A Dream": Domestic Imagery In The Poetry Of Anne Sexton, Frances S. Waters
English Theses & Dissertations
Women writers often experience a conflict between traditional feminine roles and the less traditional role of the female writer. And for those writers, like Anne Sexton, who choose not to choose between roles, the result is conflict. This conflict, recognized by previous critics and evident in Sexton's biography and poetry, results in a domestic imagery expressing this vacillation. In this study, submitted in partial fulfillment for the M. A. degree in English, I provide an in-depth study of Sexton's domestic imagery. I concern myself with two imagery patterns: one, in which the symbolic image's meaning changes randomly with no controlling …

To Sing Like The Hermit Thrush, Gwen Mcalpine
English Theses & Dissertations
The poems in To Sing Like The Hermit Thrush are about loss, about realizing how little control we have over our destinies, about death and about the defeat of love. Themes of loss, alienation, stasis, fear, and anger; repeated images such as threatening landscapes ("I study the clouds for a face, / a face like the killer inside, / the one we use on each other") and death scenes ( "we die with every breath / this horrible beauty exacts"); frequent use of city landscapes ("I've been in the city so long/ even birds, children/ sound like small machines"); and …

Biographical Themes In T. S. Eliot's Early Poetry, Jeo-Yong Noh
English Theses & Dissertations
Throughout his career, T. S. Eliot developed his central poetic doctrine, the theory of poetic impersonality. Because of the importance of this theory to Eliot, a question is raised about its importance to his own poetry. Some recent critics, examining Eliot's poetry in the light of his memoirs and biographies, have found that Eliot was not governed by his theory. My thesis is designed to continue this investigation which so far has been done incompletely and randomly.
This investigation finds that Eliot suffered from a congenital double hernia, from his disastrous first marriage, and from general poor health. Furthermore, in …

The essence of Karl Marx's criticism of the modern world, argues PETER HALEY, rests more on ethics than economics. Currently Visiting Assistant Professor in the College at the University of Chicago, Haley has investigated the charisma concept in Weber and some of his precursors.
Theocracy, whether championed by a Solzhenitsyn or a Jerry Falwell, says GORMAN BEAUCHAMP, is fundamentally antidemocratic. Author of numerous articles on utopian fiction and of a recent book on Jack London, Beauchamp is Associate Professor of English in the Department of Humanities in the College of Engineering at the University of …
