Breakfast At The Breece D'J International House Of Pancake, Michele Moore Jan 1985

Breakfast At The Breece D'J International House Of Pancake, Michele Moore

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"It was cool and dim inside the restaurant despite the sun that came in through the east windows. The hostess' greeting was equally cool. Anne remembered, as she followed Barb and the hostess to the table, the time her father had said he would never return to Canada because there was too much English influence and the people were unfriendly. They were seated at a table for two along the wall opposite the windows, between an Oriental couple and an American man and woman with their two little girls."

In A Land Of Plenty: A Don West Reader, Don West, Constance Adams West

Copyright-Free Books

Rooted in a particular place, the South and especially the Appalachian hills; in a long time, with poems dating from as early as 1932 and as late as 1981; and in the wide experience of a man who has been a farmer, lineman, preacher, organizer, deck hand, professor, and journalist. Land of Plenty is about America over the last half a century. It is about miners, freedom, racism, sharecroppers, family, love, loss, the South, laughter, labor, hunger, and heroism...Constance Adams West's spare illustrations make Land of Plenty still more beautiful." -Dave Roediger, Dept. of History, Northwestern U.

JOHN A. MILLS finds in The Time of Your Life an absurdist meaning lurking below the surface vision of pleasant typicality. Associate Professor of English at the University of Arizona, Mills has written several articles and a book, Hamlet on Stage: The Great Tradition, on the theater.

WILLIAM C. PRATT dissects the roles of the intellectual in contemporary society and finds merit still in that calling. Pratt is Professor of History at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. His scholarly interest in the American left and farmer and labor movements has resulted in several …

Rusticus: Notes On Class And Culture In Rural New Hampshire, Donald Hall

New England Journal of Public Policy

Old New Hampshire Highway Number Four was incorporated by an act of the New Hampshire legislature in the autumn of 1800. It wound out of Portsmouth, a seaport that once rivaled Boston, drove west through Concord, north past Penacook, through Boscawen, Salisbury, Andover, and Wilmot on its way to Lebanon and the Connecticut River. These names string history like beads. The Penacook tribe assembled each year on the banks of the Merrimack at the site of the present town that bears their name. I grew up thinking Boscawen an unusual Indian name; it is Cornish, surname of an admiral victorious …

And Then The Letting Go, Kim Silveira Bowers Jan 1985

And Then The Letting Go, Kim Silveira Bowers

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The novel And Then The Letting Go involves protagonists Samantha Evans' simultaneous discoveries of her husband Don's infidelity, her own unplanned pregnancy, and the pregnancy of her unmarried, best friend Regina. These pivotal events act as emotional catalysts, ejecting Sam out of the passive restraints of her unhappy marriage into a frightening, yet exhilarating, life of active participation.

Within a nine month temporal framework, the novel explores a period of psychological gestation which results in the birth of her new Identity. Sam Evans passes from frozen passivity ("The nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs--") into a chilling confrontation with the "Hour …

From Falling Beams To Fallen Souls : The Ethical Development Of The Hard-Boiled Detective Novel, Kevin Chaffee Dec 1984

From Falling Beams To Fallen Souls : The Ethical Development Of The Hard-Boiled Detective Novel, Kevin Chaffee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The hard-boiled detective story ushered in a revolution in the mystery story. The older "formal" mystery story saw society as a benevolent, ordering force which the detective restored by catching the murderer, while the hard-boiled mystery portrayed society as corrupt, wild and flawed, and presented an implicit criticism of it. The three best writers of the hard-boiled school, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald, show an ethical progression, a turning outward, from the personal, inwardly focused ethics of Hammett's characters to the outwardly turned moral understanding of Macdonald's hero.

Dashiell Hammett writes of an ironic, tough world that the …

Who Owns The Night? Vietnam: Personal And Fictional Narratives, Charles F. Angell Dec 1984

Who Owns The Night? Vietnam: Personal And Fictional Narratives, Charles F. Angell

Bridgewater Review

Novels and reminiscences written by Vietnam combat veterans are being published with increasing frequency. Dust jackets and end papers proclaim that each new narrative is for Vietnam what All Quiet on the Western Front was for World War I and The Naked and the Dead or Catch 22 were for World War II. Unfortunately, if it can be said that generals fight current wars using the tactics of earlier wars, so Vietnam War authors structure their narratives using the frameworks of earlier writers. Too many – Winston Groom’s Better Times Than These or Steven Phillips Smith’s American Boys are typical …
