The Book Of Memes, Michael Ray Owens Apr 2011

The Book Of Memes, Michael Ray Owens

English Theses & Dissertations

The Book of Memes describes the classic battle between free will and mind control. In a process similar to installing new software on a computer, an investigator modifies the behavior of unruly high school students by implantation of new memes, tiny bits of information that regulate human behavior much the same as genes regulate human biology. In short order the students change from thugs to model students. But in the rush to get the job done, the investigator ignores issues such as freedom to choose, and the students are given no choice whether they want new memes or not.

Children Of The Sun, Anton Delateur Apr 2011

Children Of The Sun, Anton Delateur

English Theses & Dissertations

Children of the Sun is a novel presented as main character Clay Felts's Master's thesis in anthropology. The story migrates from the Columbia Basin of Eastern Washington to the Peruvian Andes, following Clay's quest to translate Inca quipu knots. The novel engages with several themes, the most pervasive of which is the inscrutability of the human experience. From this foundation, the story goes on to explore the importance of family versus material accomplishment, the effects of discovery and loss, and the colonial enterprise.

The Dust Grows Hard, Eric Ramseier Apr 2011

The Dust Grows Hard, Eric Ramseier

English Theses & Dissertations

The Dust Grows Hard is a collection of short stories taking place in Kansas. The stories take place in mostly rural or isolated settings. Thematically, the stories are concerned with the character's inability to effectively communicate and what that does to their ability to function in the larger society. The stories also examine the ripple effect created from the inability to communicate on parenting and intimate relationships. The stories examine how self-mythologizing and neuroses affect not just one, but many,

The Disappearing Disease, Heather M. Weddington Apr 2011

The Disappearing Disease, Heather M. Weddington

English Theses & Dissertations

This series of connected essays explores the aesthetic of fragmentation, not as a means to disrupt narrative, but as a means to stretch that narrative. It includes both lyric and traditional forms, along with a series of flash essays that puncture the present action with moments from the past. The essays vary tonally, from the serious to the comic, and though they are connected through first person narration, they are more connected thematically, through an exploration of sexuality, faith, idealism and its loss, and the ways in which gender is performed.

Finding Home And Other Essays, Melissa Clampitt Mar 2011

Finding Home And Other Essays, Melissa Clampitt

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this thesis is to conduct an exploration of self through a series of essays. The seven personal essays that make up my thesis, collectively entitled “Finding Home and Other Essays,” have proven to be an examination of self primarily through my relationships with my parents, sister, and “step” family. These relationships focus on the uncertainty associated with unexpected changes, the moments forcing me to analyze the qualities that make up my identity. They also shed light on the mental, physical, and emotional aspects that find their way into and define “home”. With my first essay, I use …

Le Spleen De Poughkeepsie, Joshua Harmon Jan 2011

Le Spleen De Poughkeepsie, Joshua Harmon

University of Akron Press Publications

Winner of the 2010 Akron Poetry Prize, Le Spleen de Poughkeepsie is "a tender anti-epic, a grunge-tinged love song to America's benighted post-industrial heartland." Harmon's Poughkeepsie shimmers just beyond the borders of banal recognition. "If you're not part of the problem, / you're part of the lengthening / tragedy," Harmon writes in an introductory pastoral, seeking out "the stray / detours and workarounds of the secret / city inside the more obvious one...on the outskirts of the absurd / attention to the material life." Poughkeepsie is that city of the heart where no one can look at anyone else "alone," …

God In Ocean City, New Jersey, Christine Fadden Jan 2011

God In Ocean City, New Jersey, Christine Fadden

On Earth As It Is

Sometimes, God, summer weighs on me like wet ropes. My lungs seize trying to have the most fun in the world before school starts. September is Hell and we all die and go there after Labor Day. Yesterday, I saw my English teacher stuffing her bright red face with pink cotton candy. She is supposed to be reading books all summer, not coming here—wearing her hair down and eating the same things I do. I felt like the boardwalk was going to explode one splinter at a time under my feet, even though yesterday was the kind of day my …
