Impossible Year, Allexus Blanski Apr 2018

Impossible Year, Allexus Blanski

Honors Capstones

Capstone submitted as a graduate requirement for the BSU Honors Program.

This thesis features three non-fiction stories that take place mainly during my junior and senior years of college. In Life on 119th Street, I reflect back on the years growing up in my childhood home and my parents’ abusive relationship. Despite this, I also bring to light the positive relationship I had with my parents and the happy childhood they gave me and my sister. I talk about the dogs we had, particularly a Great Dane Duke who was given away, as well as the tense few years …

Perennial: An Undergraduate Thesis In Poetry, Austin Wines Apr 2018

Perennial: An Undergraduate Thesis In Poetry, Austin Wines

Honors Theses

A chapbook of poetry that explores sexuality, gender identity, mental illness, naming, and the experience of the contemporary non-binary, male bodied, Queer. "Perennial" functions as a force of resistance to hegemony, celebration, mourning, and eroticism. Through the cultivation and implementation of a personal and/or familial folklore, the poems culminate a century of inter-generational knowledge as the author draws upon the symbols of their childhood to explicate the violence and tenderness of their own Queer experience. These poems serve as a poetical feminist history and reclamation of the author's matrilineage, and the simultaneously paramount and arbitrary nature of language as it …

Second Safest City In America, Liam Cassidy Apr 2018

Second Safest City In America, Liam Cassidy

Theses

Second Safest City in America is a collection of short fiction set in Midwestern cities and suburbs, as well as the Gulf Coast. These stories explore the untethered expectations, broken promises, and absurdity of American life. The characters are violent, funny, emotionally unstable, politically wrong-minded, and compassionate. They implore empathy or actively avoid the pain of others. They search out security or take matters into their own hands. They sacrifice and they seek revenge. They are not outliers in this country. They are part of the mainstream weirdness that permeates everything.

Visitor Parking Only, Jeremy Caldwell Apr 2018

Visitor Parking Only, Jeremy Caldwell

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

VISITOR PARKING ONLY is a thesis comprised of 40 poems and a fifteen-page introduction that travels simultaneously through the climatic seasons and familial generations, creating a cyclical effect of inevitable loss and regrowth. The poems start in late spring, early summer and dive into adolescent wonder, vulnerable, and loss of innocence. Gradually as the seasons change so does the speaker, diving into young adulthood and parenting and the sense of responsibility, guilt, and confusion that has played such a large role in developing me as a person. The poems transition into the winter months where older generations, such as my …

The Key Versatility Of Stories: Storytelling And 'Sherlock Holmes', Anna Rose Redgate Apr 2018

The Key Versatility Of Stories: Storytelling And 'Sherlock Holmes', Anna Rose Redgate

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

When given the freedom to write my final essay on anything related to my course theme, Sherlock Holmes, I felt equally challenged and excited. I had found many of the topics interesting, but the one I found most interesting the Sherlock Holmes and forensic science unit. As I began my research, I realized that what was most engaging to me about the forensic science information as a communication major, was not the scientific evidence and analysis, but the stories that accompanied the real-life and fictional mysteries. This altered my course of research and forced me to ask how the role …

Xaminer, Terry Artis Apr 2018

Xaminer, Terry Artis

Theses

“Rocket” Rowan Bell is a young Black idealist who has an audacious notion to disseminate what he perceives as truth to his community through news publication. As an adolescent boy, he was a good kid and athlete with a good heart from a poor Black neighborhood. Rocket experienced what seemed to be an episode of sexual assault by a youth-minister/track-coach at his church. The ordeal may have shaped his young adult perspective and evolved into a philosophy through which Rocket contends:There are three Negro (P)s that perpetuate the pathetic plight of Black people — the Negro Preacher, the Negro …

The Ghost You Deserve, Alicia Sarah Dennis Apr 2018

The Ghost You Deserve, Alicia Sarah Dennis

LSU Master's Theses

In The Ghost You Deserve, a young entrepreneur has developed the ability to artificially replicate deceased family members using the memories of their living loved ones. Spectral resurrections, as they’re called, have become status symbols among the upper middle class. These chapters follow Raj, the brilliant but flawed creator of BioSpec, juxtaposing the story of his college relationship with a young woman named Amada in 2005 with glimpses of him in the present, where he keeps a carefully constructed representation of his ex-girlfriend in a glass mansion by the sea. The novel examines campus relationship abuse and the unintended …

Only poems with signed parental/guardian permission letters were published. Students or parents decided whether to publish the poet’s full name or first name and last initial only. The Immortal Jellyfish And Other Things That Don't Know About Love, Tianli Kilpatrick Apr 2018

The Immortal Jellyfish And Other Things That Don't Know About Love, Tianli Kilpatrick

All NMU Master's Theses

My thesis is a collection of creative nonfiction essays that play with form and language in an attempt to show that trauma can create beauty. This thesis originated with trauma theory and specifically deals with sexual assault trauma, but it also covers topics including international adoption, self-injury, and oceanic life. Jellyfish are a recurring image and theme, both the physical jellyfish itself and the mythological connection to Medusa. Jellyfish do not have brains, but they have developed complex stinging tentacles that for all their beauty make them dangerous. I chose jellyfish because their dual representation fascinates me. I think they …

The Poetics Of Power The Role Of Women’S Writing In The Moroccan Education System, Eli Makovetsky Apr 2018

The Poetics Of Power The Role Of Women’S Writing In The Moroccan Education System, Eli Makovetsky

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

While women have always been writing in Morocco a lack of access to education and sexist ideals have limited the ability of women to disseminate their stories. Now, after years of attempted reforms women are still fighting against a society that relegates them to enact traditional gender roles. While more women are receiving education in Morocco the messages that the State projects continue to be androcentric. As such, this paper examines the role of women’s writing and literature in the Moroccan education system. By putting it in the context of the women’s rights movement this paper strives to trace the …
