The Last Cherokee Of Blue Ridge, Dexter Benjamin Gore Apr 2018

The Last Cherokee Of Blue Ridge, Dexter Benjamin Gore

English Theses & Dissertations

This work is an exploration into the life of a young queer man in the United States Army charged with aiding in the removal of the Cherokee Native Americans during the 1830s Indian Removal. It is my hope that my characters and setting bring attention to the politics of queerness and nativism in a way that has not been allowed by mainstream fiction.

Sub/Mission, Abigail Naomi Brunt Apr 2018

Sub/Mission, Abigail Naomi Brunt

English Theses & Dissertations

The poems included in this manuscript look at the ways in which women have been silenced and forced to submit, with emphasis on, though not limited to, a patriarchal fundamentalist Christian subculture called Quiverfull. Part autobiography, part documentary and part myth, the manuscript explores the various ways such damage becomes interwoven into women’s identities and stories, but also the ways in which women find resilience and strength.

On the day of his mother’s death, Charlie Agate abandons his current life and returns to his childhood home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Poetry Of Roe 8, Nandi Chinna Mar 2018

Poetry Of Roe 8, Nandi Chinna

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

Poetry of Roe 8

The occasion for the writing of these poems was activism surrounding the controversial highway known as the Roe 8 extension in the areas of Cockburn and Fremantle in Western Australia. Planned in the 1950s, Roe 8 is contentious for a number of reasons, including extraordinary political deals over funding, undue process regarding environmental reporting, lack of a business case, inadequate noise and traffic modelling, erasure of Indigenous heritage sites, and clearing of the sensitive Beeliar wetlands and Coolbellup banksia woodlands which were designated a Threatened Ecological Community in 2016. During the summer of 2016/2017 contractors started …

Saturn/Cronus-11, Joel Weishaus

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

“Saturn/Cronus-11” is from a Cosmography, an in-progress project of Literary Digital Art that invokes the gods of seven planets in our celestial neighborhood; plus The Sun, The Moon; and Incognita. It includes my trope of invagination: fragments exhumed from the authored corpus and transplanted into the body of a living text, which, along with superimposed images and animations, advances us toward a more magnanimous, transdisciplinary sphere. The project also includes notes.

Visualizing The Narrative: A Modernization And Extension Of Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants"., Koryn N. Naylor Mar 2018

Visualizing The Narrative: A Modernization And Extension Of Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants"., Koryn N. Naylor

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

For this project, I completed a screenplay for a short film. For my preliminary research into screenplay writing and form, I studied key concepts in narrative cinema, including theories of visual and narrative content. I wanted to enhance my understanding of the relationship between the writing of film and the way it translates to the screen. In particular I studied the relation between the narrative (plot and story) and visual (cinematography and mise-en-scène) in film theory, and the dichotomy of classical Hollywood vs. Avant-garde cinema. My research enhanced my understanding of how visual narrative can offer elements to a story …

The Legend Of The Miskito Indians: A Literary Translation Project, Alyssa Friesen Mar 2018

The Legend Of The Miskito Indians: A Literary Translation Project, Alyssa Friesen

SWOSU Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project began in the spring of 2014 for the class of Intermediate Spanish Composition and Grammar. In class the object was to read this particular legend, but I decided to take that a step further and do a translation of it in order for me to better understand it. This is a literary translation, which is the most difficult type of translation which is why I used certain theories of translation to help get an accurate translation for the textbook Introduction to Spanish Translation by Jack Child. By applying these methods of translation, I was able to get an …

Eroticism Or Neo-Platonism?: The Case In The Sonnet “Detente Sombra De Mi Bien Esquivo,” By Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Juan Manuel Ramirez Velazquez Mar 2018

Eroticism Or Neo-Platonism?: The Case In The Sonnet “Detente Sombra De Mi Bien Esquivo,” By Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Juan Manuel Ramirez Velazquez

SWOSU Journal of Undergraduate Research

This essay is an in depth analysis of the poem “Detente sombra de mi bien esquivo “, by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the most important poet of the Spanish American Baroque period. This sonnet has been traditionally interpreted as a love poem, more specifically from the Neo Platonic traditions of the European Renaissance. Some scholars have also proposed an analysis of the poem based on the mysticism. In my analysis, I propose a new interpretation based on the eroticism tradition and style. This tradition can also be found in the poetry written in Spain by other authors that …

Art, Music, And Poetry: Artistic Documentation During The Holocaust, Lauren Beauregard Mar 2018

Art, Music, And Poetry: Artistic Documentation During The Holocaust, Lauren Beauregard

SWOSU Journal of Undergraduate Research

According to Theodor Adorno, “to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric.”1 Of course, poetry was written during the Holocaust as well as after. More accurately, Nina Apfelbaum argued that “reading the memoirs, diaries and works of fiction written by Holocaust survivors provides another dimension to an understanding of the Holocaust.”2 During the Holocaust, Jewish artists used their abilities to create works as a way to both document their everyday lives as well as to reclaim humanity in the German concentration camps.

The Way We Dream Now: History, Theory, And Lgbtq Memoir In America, Megan Paslawski Feb 2018

The Way We Dream Now: History, Theory, And Lgbtq Memoir In America, Megan Paslawski

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines American memoirs written after 2000 by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer authors with an eye to how the recent institutionalization of queer theory and the open production of LGBTQ histories affect these writers’ conceptions of their lives, aspirations, and cultures. I argue that these memoirs, sometimes consciously, find themselves struggling with what are also competing ideas within queer theory about the queerness of futurity even as they turn to the past of queer/trans literature and history to bolster their senses of possible identities and communities. This often has the effect of positioning contemporary LGBTQ writers as …

La Prédominance Des Techniques Audiovisuelles Et Numériques Au Théâtre, Marcel Ghosn Jan 2018

La Prédominance Des Techniques Audiovisuelles Et Numériques Au Théâtre, Marcel Ghosn

Regards

The evolution of technologies in the audiovisual and theatre fields has succeeded in breaking the separation between actors and digital bodies. What is an actor today? Is he still essential on stage or in film? And what about digital bodies and their ability to produce and convey emotions and performances in the same way as a human actor?

Old: A Personal Essayist’S Reflections Of An Aging Adult, Marcia Irene Taylor Jan 2018

Old: A Personal Essayist’S Reflections Of An Aging Adult, Marcia Irene Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation opens with a critical introduction that examines the role persona, reader, and implication play in the composition of the personal essay. Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory is then applied as a tool in an essayist’s exploration of how one’s communication choices impact life experiences. This section is followed by an explanation of the subject matter of the essays. The pedagogical chapter addresses the author’s experience with the student-centered teaching of a first creative writing class, lessons learned, theorists who affected the process, and suggestions for improvement as the author moves forward in postsecondary teaching. The dissertation concludes with …

At The Trail's End, Naomi Marshall Jan 2018

At The Trail's End, Naomi Marshall

Dissertations and Theses

Oregon City lies at the base of Willamette Falls. It was one of the few known points in the Oregon Territory, as the destination for thousands coming overland to lay claim to the acres upon acres of forested land. Presently, Oregon City is known by its proximity to Portland. The two neighboring settlements were considered "long-distance," when on a spring evening in 1889, energy generated from the falls was carried through 14 miles of recently-laid copper wire to power streetlights in downtown Portland's Chapman Square. It was the first ever long-distance transmission of electricity. Oregon City, the oldest incorporated settlement …
