Snow Ghost, Joseph Rowles Apr 2020

Snow Ghost, Joseph Rowles

All NMU Master's Theses

Kaden Edwards is living life on the precipice of achieving all his wildest dreams until fate intervenes. The fallout leaves his friends and family to pick up the pieces in the kind of winter wonderland people flock to from across the globe.

Do all ski bums go to heaven? What happens to our loved ones after we’re gone? Is life in a mountain town all it’s cracked up to be? These are the questions Joe Rowles explores in his latest novel Snow Ghost, where death is hardly the end and life continues to make S-turns long after the protagonist meets …

Motherworld, Destiny Hemphill Apr 2020

Motherworld, Destiny Hemphill

Theses and Dissertations

Following an unnamed black collectivity consulting the oracles of mama-n-em as they build a new world, the poems in MOTHERWORLD seek to represent a world-to-come as all ready accessible within the now, even if only in glimmers. In doing so, the project asks: What emergent ways of being can be glimpsed from where I am? What does getting free look like? What does it feel like? If this world becomes manifest through modes of ritualized violence that are institutionalized through colonial structures, how do we undo this? My work is thinking through the possibility that part of this undoing lies …

Buried Hair, Abigail Radcliffe Apr 2020

Buried Hair, Abigail Radcliffe

Graduate Thesis Collection

Like every other poet, I’ve always been trying to write the poem living inside of me. The poem of myself. So many iterations of this very poem have come about because of my exploration of the greats and because of my exploration of self. The most predominant themes that come up in my thesis are my Cherokee heritage and culture, my family, and my chosen relationships. Interspersed are poems about hardships I, and others, have faced as women. The constant dilemma of womanhood is certainly exacerbated when “woman” is paired with “non-white.” Through my poems, I’ve tried to explore these …

Beneath The Dry Teeth Of Mountains, Susan Doherty Osteen Apr 2020

Beneath The Dry Teeth Of Mountains, Susan Doherty Osteen

Theses and Dissertations

In certain pockets of rural America time functions in different measure. This collection of stories focuses on one such anomaly, the rural ranching community in northeastern New Mexico. In the shadow of ancient Volcanoes, the soil is thin, rocky, arid, but surprisingly fertile for native dry land grass. Elevation fluctuates from to 9,000 feet to less than 4000, depending on whether one is on top of a mountain or down in a canyon. It is a place where wealth is measured in cattle and land, where horses are a necessity and pressed Levis are considered Sunday dress. Life continues much …

Ego Sum, Victoria Romero Apr 2020

Ego Sum, Victoria Romero

Theses and Dissertations

The use of first-person narration in literature has traditionally been used to impart a sense of intimacy, immediacy, and relatability between the reader and the work’s narrator. First-person narration has also traditionally acted as an initial step in crafting a signature voice or style for fiction writers in creative writing—one that is often abandoned as the writer’s style matures. Additionally, the cultural climate of this and preceding years has engendered many debates and discussions centering on which voices are heard and received as credible witnesses to political, institutional, and social events. The MeToo Movement, Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, …

Might Could, Cody Donovan Hosek Apr 2020

Might Could, Cody Donovan Hosek

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses poetry to draw attention to the means in which we communicate ourselves and our experience, namely in the aftermath of loss—loss of loved ones, of a sense of home, loss of trust in the veracity of one’s own senses. While exploring these affective spaces, attention was drawn especially to the eye and the translation implicit in the mind’s work of perception. The writing process involved returning to the sites of home—the Outer Banks, the Blue Ridge mountains, Oconee county, the southern stretch of Appalachia—and it is in this dynamic geography that the images, more often natural than …

What We Do Not Perceive When We Perceive It, Hannah Jane Trammell Apr 2020

What We Do Not Perceive When We Perceive It, Hannah Jane Trammell

English Theses & Dissertations

The thesis herein attempts to traverse, overcome, and, ultimately subsume back into the conventions of such genres as science-fiction, fabulism, surrealism, romance, horror, and speculative fiction. The primary tool used for this purpose is a great bag of hot, sparking meat caught between two ears and a thick skull. A few notebooks, pens, and a laptop might also have helped in this pursuit. The stories and poems contained herein are works of fiction inspired by non-fictional systems of feeling. Using all the tools given to me by my professors and the craft and theory books I read during my coursework …

Le Pouvoir Du Sang Féminin Dans L’Art Contemporain Arabe, Jana Mrad Mar 2020

Le Pouvoir Du Sang Féminin Dans L’Art Contemporain Arabe, Jana Mrad

Regards

After the 1970’s performances, and at the time the feminist collectives, whose artistic approaches often recall menstruation, emerged, feminine blood also found its place in the contemporary Arab art scene. Driven by a desire of emancipation and freedom, some Middle Eastern artists seized the feminine blood and made it into a paradigm in order to shed light on the female body and the way the latter is lived, perceived and controlled. By taking on this taboo, they found a way to elude censorship, waive the rules, cross the limits... in order to free women’s wounded bodies.

Résumé

What Can A Body Do? Answers From Arab Cinema, Laura U. Marks Mar 2020

What Can A Body Do? Answers From Arab Cinema, Laura U. Marks

Regards

Baruch Spinoza’s statement “We do not know what a body can do” argues that bodies learn their powers not from divinely imposed laws but through experience in the world. Thought must pass through the body, in a way that menaces both existing thoughts and the body as it is at present. Great works of contemporary independent cinema in Arabic-speaking countries express the body’s forces of becoming in numerous ways, some of which this essay tracks: from not yet living to cultivating molecular forces, enfolding powers, expressing volatile passions, coming to life, and attaining adequate ideas. Some of these dynamics are …

Mexican American Studies Faculty Publications

Missing Time: Remembrances Of History’S Return, Marissa Brostoff Feb 2020

Missing Time: Remembrances Of History’S Return, Marissa Brostoff

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation chronicles a profound recent shift within the US political left from an essentially backward-looking orientation to one marked by an unfamiliar sense of timeliness. Presented chronologically, the essays included here approach the vertiginous American political landscape since 2016 through readings of cultural phenomena from Bernie Sanders’s short-lived career as an experimental writer to Caitlyn Jenner’s reality show. They make up a Trump-era diary haunted by the ghosts of twentieth-century social movements and an intellectual coming-of-age story about growing up at the end of the end of history.

Monkey Houses Or Revolutionary Legislatures? Moderating The Binary Of Black Politicians In South Carolina, Anna L. Biesecker-Mast Jan 2020

Monkey Houses Or Revolutionary Legislatures? Moderating The Binary Of Black Politicians In South Carolina, Anna L. Biesecker-Mast

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

Writing this paper was an extensive process. It began early in the Spring semester—in ASI 120. From the beginning of the semester the ASI 120 students knew we would be writing a historiography in the realm of Reconstruction. To hone down a more specific topic, we were assigned Eric Foner’s A Short History of Reconstruction. By reading his account of Reconstruction, I was able to select a topic: black politicians in South Carolina. Next, a research librarian visited my seminar and introduced us to the research process. From there, I was able to gather sources and begin my annotated …

The Legacy Of American Terrorism: Lynching In America During The Reconstruction Period, Grace E. Gibson Jan 2020

The Legacy Of American Terrorism: Lynching In America During The Reconstruction Period, Grace E. Gibson

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This historiography was a semester long project beginning in Spring of 2019. Because the Reconstruction Era of the United States was briefly skimmed over in my previous history classes in high school, much of my knowledge of the subject was brand new from the very beginning of my research. For background on the Reconstruction Period, I read Eric Foner's A Short History of Reconstruction. After completing online modules provided by my instructor, I learned how to properly find scholarly sources through the University of Dayton library and JSTOR. It was through these means that I was able to find …

The Bone Train, Pamela Livingston Jan 2020

The Bone Train, Pamela Livingston

The Tuxedo Archives

Standing inside the shadow of the dying gum tree, Gadje counted the curses. There must be one for every misshapen god Ashtong’s coffins had offended and the train of coffins was long. Very long.

Brittle bone prayers swayed, clicking in the crisp breeze that broke through the branches of gum forest everywhere but where Gadje stood. He only had to toss some bone dust into the wind and mumble his request to make the wind god understand, they had worked around each other for many years. Crushing the shards of broken prayers in his palm, Gadje refilled the stiff gator …
