Hey Boo, I’Ve Been Lonely. What’S Good With You?, Khari Johnson-Ricks Jan 2020

Hey Boo, I’Ve Been Lonely. What’S Good With You?, Khari Johnson-Ricks

Theses and Dissertations

I explore the interlacing macro and micro implications of capitalism on interpersonal relationships. In an attempt to reconcile that problem I use storytelling, painting, and performance to imagine radical futures when love safety and abundance are easier to access.

“Peel It Back Slowly” And “Rolling Right Along”: A Collection Of Body Horror Stories, Vincent Manta Jan 2020

“Peel It Back Slowly” And “Rolling Right Along”: A Collection Of Body Horror Stories, Vincent Manta

Theses and Dissertations

Body horror, or any sort of horror story detailing grotesque changes in one’s body, has long been considered unworthy of academic discussion and critique. It was not until recently that genres like body horror that fall into the realm of “low culture” have actually been studied seriously. The two stories in this collection enter into dialogue with modern genre, film, and gender studies in an attempt to comment on the current state of body horror and how its tropes function in modern storytelling. Focusing these stories on interpersonal relationships allows the horrors of the body to take front and center …

Honors College Portfolios

This portfolio is a compilation of work I have completed throughout my journey to get my bachelor’s degree in Marketing with a minor in Digital Media Arts at Duquesne University. I love the way my minor complemented my major, in that I could combine my love of consumer behavior and research with my love of visual design and creativity. Now, I can not only complete market research, but I can also present my findings in a visually attractive way. That being said, through my time at Duquesne, I have learned to be more than just a “businesswoman.” I have been …

Spontaneous Minds And Electric Romanticism: Kerouac, Ginsberg, Dylan, Joplin, Sasha Tamar Strelitz Jan 2020

Spontaneous Minds And Electric Romanticism: Kerouac, Ginsberg, Dylan, Joplin, Sasha Tamar Strelitz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation postulates a sub-category of Romanticism: electric Romanticism. As opposed to its “acoustic” forebear, electric Romanticism exists in an electric age, beginning after Henry David Thoreau’s rumination on the telegraph wire as an electric rendering of the æolian harp image. Romantic poets used the æolian harp to analogize the act of writing activities set into motion by spontaneous thoughts, a central attribute of the Romantic literary movement. The modernized electric version of the æolian harp—the telegraph wire—signals that electric Romanticism branches off from its source and evolves along with technology to engage more synchronously with the spontaneous.

Electric Romantics …

Con La Pluma Entre Dos Mundos - Post Edition - Prologue, Volume 2, Number 1, Damaris Serrano, Fátima Araúz, Megan Mckarns, Michael Daniel Curtis Stanley, Morgan Foister

Con la pluma entre dos mundos

In Volume II, there are 4 issues or journals, three of Latin American literature and one of Advanced Composition (years 2020-2021). This volume has been named “Post” because of its postmodern approach within Hispanic Cultural Studies.

These issues are also of great importance because they respond to the literary, professional, and linguistic work in Spanish produced during the peak of the pandemic, when teaching had to become a synchronous experience through virtual space.

The Survey of Spanish American Literature is part of the core curriculum for the B.A. in Spanish, offered by the Spanish program, at Wright State University. However, …

I. Expect The Unexpected: Heraclitus, Kant And The Æsthetics Of Fine Wine, Charles S. Taylor

Wine Journey: Tasting Dwelling Learning at The Kitchen Table

Actually, you do not even have to taste this wine,” said the owner of a high-end fruit market who, due to his own passion, sold wine as well. “Just smell it!” He was right. I opened that 1947 Giacomo Borgogno Barolo Riserva a year later to celebrate my wife’s 35th birthday, when the wine was also 35 years old. I expected that the wine would be good, a library release only one year earlier from what was considered the best Barolo vintage of the 20th century by a well-regarded producer. The wine was wonderful to smell and, indeed, to taste. …

Mebuyan, The Tropical, And What Could Be The Erotic: A Mythography, Christian Jil R. Benitez

Filipino Faculty Publications

The present essay attempts to interrogate the mythic figure of Mebuyan in her refractions, as in Agnes Miclat-Cacayan’s critical and literary engagements, as accompanied by Aster Delgado’s illustration and Sadhana Bux’s From the Womb of Mebuyan (1998); parts of Agnes Arellano’s Tatlong Buddhang Ina (1996), Project Pleiades (2007), and Project Pleiades 2 (2018); Rita Gudiño’s Mebuyan sa Idalmunon (2017); Kublai Millan’s Goddess (2002); and Robert Feleo’s illustration in The Soul Book (1991) and the aforementioned vitrina Mebuyan (2009). While these works differ in their respective media and locations, ranging from portable paper to site-specific ceramic, the navigation of these works …

Representation In The Story: The Social Impact Of Diversity In Transmedia, Tiffany S. Tanaka-Cooper Jan 2020

Representation In The Story: The Social Impact Of Diversity In Transmedia, Tiffany S. Tanaka-Cooper

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to take a more profound and nuanced look into the effects of diversity in transmedia storytelling (also known as transmedia narrative or multiplatform storytelling) on society, more specifically, how the representation in these stories affect the minority groups that interact with transmedia. This thesis investigates the depiction of minority groups in transmedia storytelling and the influence of identifiable characters and plotlines. The research and following interviews I have engaged in will encapsulate into a screenplay set in a fictional court that offers the discourse of "forced diversity" within the transmedia narrative: whether or not …

Macho Remixes: A Collection Of Writings, Daniel A. Hernandez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Macho Remixes: A Collection of Writings is a thesis containing short stories, poetry, and a personal essay that discuss the matter of toxic masculinity through the representations of male and macho sexuality in the Latinx culture. It covers depictions of how Latinx men have been stereotyped in today’s society. The works included here are my own perspectives of what masculinity means to me as a young multicultural male navigating life. Throughout these texts, I—my speakers and narrators—grapple with understanding the conflicting and oppressive expectations drawn from my roots, particularly those based in Latinx culture. The purpose is considering the negative …

Conceptualizing The Unspeakable: A Conceptual Metaphor Theory Analysis Of Sexual Assault Trauma In Creative Nonfiction, Ariana Ciamaricone Jan 2020

Conceptualizing The Unspeakable: A Conceptual Metaphor Theory Analysis Of Sexual Assault Trauma In Creative Nonfiction, Ariana Ciamaricone

West Chester University Master’s Theses

This paper explores the use of conceptual metaphors (CMs) in two works of creative nonfiction, namely Laurie Halse Anderson’s (2019) Shout and Elissa Washuta’s (2014) My Body is a Book of Rules. Anderson’s (2019) poetic memoir centers on her experiences with sexual assault throughout her childhood and the process of writing her young adult novel Speak (1999). Washuta (2014) writes on her experiences with rape and mental illness via prose. Both memoirs detail their authors’ reckoning with the experience of sexual assault, and this paper investigates how trauma narratives attempt to “resolve what cannot be resolved, to generate meaning, …

Iv. Gifts Of Taste: Discussing Wine With Heraclitus And Friedrich Hölderlin, Charles S. Taylor Jan 2020

Iv. Gifts Of Taste: Discussing Wine With Heraclitus And Friedrich Hölderlin, Charles S. Taylor

Wine Journey: Tasting Dwelling Learning at The Kitchen Table

It happened on a weekday evening. Dinner was Pasta e Fagioli and I would have chosen a wine from Tuscany. But, in my cellar a thought arose to explore, and a 19-year-old 1999 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbaresco Sorì Paitin ended up on the table. A new pairing 1 plus a wine from a new-to-me producer I had waited 15 years for it to mature provided opportunities. Pasta e Fagioli should be a fine accompanist to the wonderful softening taste of a maturing Barbaresco from the good 1999 vintage. The pairing worked well enough to repeat. That was merely the prelude.
