T. Hanks For Everything, Anissa Johnson Nov 2020

T. Hanks For Everything, Anissa Johnson

All NMU Master's Theses

This thesis is an excerpt of an in-progress, full-length memoir. T. Hanks for Everything celebrates the myriad of ways art molds and shapes who we become and interrogates the nature in which mere appreciation transforms into fandom. The writer reflects on the impact actor Tom Hanks has had on her life through narratives that blend the personal with the biographical, developing both the writer’s and Hanks’ characters side-by-side. The writer uses humor as a mechanism to navigate the world, to deflect pain, and to find healing in the midst of it. This thesis hopes to be a safe place for …

The Illuminated Empty Spaces, Jane Wagar Nov 2020

The Illuminated Empty Spaces, Jane Wagar

All NMU Master's Theses

This collection of poetry and flash non-fiction is a full-length hybrid collection that focuses on themes of grief, inheritance, memory, and sexuality. Genetic inheritance, inherited trauma, and the tangible inheritance of physical objects are all explored throughout the work. The project was inspired by the loss of my mother, and my subsequent diagnosis with a BRCA2 mutation. The fractured form was inspired by the gaps in memory that are created as a result of grief. The Illuminated Empty Spaces aims to define the space that grief leaves behind, and ultimately define what that space creates room for.

Le Cinéma Libanais Coproduit : Écarts Et Variations, Noha Maroun Oct 2020

Le Cinéma Libanais Coproduit : Écarts Et Variations, Noha Maroun

Regards

Lebanese filmmakers often choose particular narrative forms for their co-produced movies. Either they deviate from traditional screenplay writing or they develop a lot of thematic variations. The margins of freedom, creativity, and inventiveness therefore increase globally in Lebanese co-produced cinema. To what extent are these new narrative forms adapted to the destabilized Lebanese geopolitical context? How do documentaries, dramas, and road movies establish a kind of Lebanese identity and memory in these movies, leading to their frequent selection in European and international film festivals?

Résumé

Les cinéastes-auteurs libanais choisissent souvent des formes narratives particulières pour leurs films coproduits. Ils oscillent …

Les Co-Productions Algériennes Avec L'Europe : Standardisation Ou Résistance ?, Salima Tenfiche

Regards

After more than twenty years of silence, Algerian cinema has resurfaced on the international scene for ten years, through co-productions with foreign countries and especially Europe. The use of foreign funding and the recognition of these films by the legitimating institutions of the North — reading committees and prestigious international festivals — raise the question of the subjugation of these filmmakers to European cultural hegemony.
However, if some Algerian filmmakers and producers appeal to foreign funds, it is above all to free themselves from the supervision of the State and from censorship in their own country. These filmmakers are far …

Seepage, Kelly Norah Drukker Oct 2020

Seepage, Kelly Norah Drukker

The Goose

This creative nonfiction essay explores the interrelatedness of place—in this case, the island of Inis Mór in Ireland—with time, memory, and emotion, tracing how a landscape as we experience it in the present can also intersect with the physical and mnemonic landscapes of our past.

Pacific Oyster, Veronica Fibisan Oct 2020

Pacific Oyster, Veronica Fibisan

The Goose

"Pacific Oyster" is part of a series titled Invaders, which focuses on non-native species of creatures and seaweeds which have taken over certain areas of the UK shoreline. The Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has been dominating native oyster populations since it was introduced in the late 19th century as an alternative to the already declining native oyster population. Harvesting of the wild Pacific Oyster has been encouraged in order to keep numbers under control. There are ethical implications of such practices which create a rift between policy and morality, as foraging is carefully controlled in the UK, but perhaps …

Soleil D'Azur, Camille Sova Oct 2020

Soleil D'Azur, Camille Sova

The Goose

The Goose

Beauty In The Grotesque; Review Of Hayden's Ferry Review, Spring/Summer 2008, Zachary Boissonneau

The Review Review

Hayden's Ferry Review is a biannual publication of Arizona State University's creative writing department. The Spring/Summer 2008 issue--themed "The Grotesque"--features poetry, fiction, and visual art from over sixty contributors, and includes an international section. It seems to be split evenly between poetry and prose as far as page count goes, and the only obvious continuity of set up is the entire international section sandwiched between the scattered poetry, prose, and visual art.

Esteemed Lit Mag Charts Wide Experience Of Human Nature; Review Of Five Points, Winter 2015 - 2016, Tripp Reade

The Review Review

Shall I begin with the Five Points 17.1 contributor’s list? Will you want to know that these pages are spangled with NEA, Guggenheim, and Rockefeller fellowships, Pushcart, Library of Congress, and AWP prizes, magazine editors, professors, and poets-in residence? That the list of their published chapbooks, collections, short stories, and novels would consume the rest of this review if I let it? Or will it be better to turn aside, into a consideration of the issue itself? The latter? By all means, then.
