Undoing Gender: An Analysis Of How Women Communicate Within The Agricultural Industry, Shala R. Larson

In recent history, women have entered more business-like positions in the agricultural industry. This thesis seeks to understand how women in agriculture describe their workplace communication and whether they feel they are part of a muted group. Twelve women were interviewed regarding their experiences as women in agriculture and were asked whether they feel valued in their positions and how they communicate with their male co-workers. Specifically, interviewees were asked if they ever felt the need to alter their communication to complement, emulate, or otherwise adjust to masculine communication styles. Identifying developmental habitat is essential for understanding population structure and species resiliency, especially for critically endangered species. In long-lived, oceanic, migratory animals such as sea turtles, elucidating developmental grounds is particularly difficult. When data are deficient or challenging to acquire, scientists often lean towards traditional quantitative methods when a social-ecological systems approach could better provide crucial baseline data and guiding information. Political participation to create social change is considered a professional and ethical imperative for social workers. Although researchers have examined overall political participation by social workers, little is known about how clinical social workers participate and the broader societal factors that influence their political participation. A critical phenomenological methodology was used with a sample of 23 clinical social workers from New England states to (1) identify how socio-political forces influenced their political activity; and, (2) understand how the concept of power affected individuals’ level of engagement or inclination toward the political process. Background: Adolescents use social media for information on medical and social aspects of maturation.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the concerns and information needs of adolescents regarding menarche and first sexual intercourse.

Methods: Questions about menarche or first sexual intercourse were obtained from Yahoo Answers, a community-based social media question-and-answer website. A total of 1226 questions were analyzed. We focused on 123 question pairs made by users who asked questions on both topics and reported their ages at each. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on these question pairs.

The present study utilizes student essays about diversity to examine ways in which students are exposed to diversity as communication majors throughout their coursework. Four themes emerged from this analysis. First, students became more aware and open-minded. Second, their understanding of different viewpoints and cultural differences increased. Third, they learned about diversity in an array of courses. Finally, their communication curriculum became more connected and relevant to their use and evaluation of media, journalism, and film.

Formation of harmful microbes and their associated mycotoxins on rough rice during storage presents negative socioeconomic impacts to producers and consumers. The objective for this study was to investigate the impact of treating rough rice with selected infrared (IR) wavelengths at different IR intensities and heating durations, followed by a tempering step for further inactivation of microbes (mold and bacteria) on the grain. Freshly-harvested long-grain, hybrid, rough rice (XL 745) with initial moisture content (IMC) of 18.4% wet basis (w.b.) was used. Regular gynecological screenings are critical for women in promotion of health and preventing diseases like cervical cancer. Despite the importance of such examinations, many women fail to adhere to recommended screening protocols. As a result, women experience an increased disease risk. The current study examined the relationship between patient-provider communication quality, skill, and empathy on pelvic exam seeking behavior and exam-related anxiety and satisfaction. Additionally, negative self-concept, perceived poor genital self-image, and various elements of the socio-physical clinic environment were explored to better understand their impact on a women’s care seeking behavior.

Toward A Performative Understanding Of Politeness, C. Kyle Rudick, Danielle E. Mcgeough

In this article, we argue that critical communication scholars have largely overlooked the study of politeness as a constitutive component of identity, culture, and power. We offer a critical-performative framework for critical scholars interested in studying politeness as a political, discursive, and embodied act. To develop this agenda, we first outline Brown and Levinson’s postpositivist theory of politeness. We then review three challenges to their use of intentionality, Grice’s cooperative principle, and Goffman’s concept of face. These challenges are located in interactional, traditional critical, and discursive understandings of politeness (respectively). Next, we show how a performative understanding of politeness both …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาทัศนคติของผู้บริโภคที่มีต่อการสื่อสารบุคลิกภาพห้าองค์ประกอบของพนักงานขายเครื่องสำอาง พฤติกรรมการซื้อเครื่องสำอางของผู้บริโภคและศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างทัศนคติของผู้บริโภคต่อการสื่อสารบุคลิกภาพห้าองค์ประกอบของพนักงานขายเครื่องสำอางกับพฤติกรรมการซื้อของผู้บริโภค กลุ่มตัวอย่างที่ใช้ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ คือ ผู้อาศัยอยู่ในกรุงเทพมหานคร เพศชายและหญิง อายุระหว่าง 18-40 ปี จำนวน 204 คน ผลวิจัยพบว่า ทัศนคติของกลุ่มตัวอย่างที่มีต่อบุคลิกภาพห้าองค์ประกอบของพนักงานขายเครื่องสำอางในภาพรวมอยู่ในระดับมากที่สุด โดยบุคลิกภาพแบบแสดงตัว แบบประนีประนอม แบบมีจิตสำนึกและแบบหวั่นไหวอยู่ในระดับมากที่สุด นอกจากนี้ ระดับความคิดเห็นของกลุ่มตัวอย่างเกี่ยวกับความต้องการซื้อเครื่องสำอางของผู้บริโภค ตามกระบวนการตัดสินใจเลือกซื้อสินค้า โดยภาพรวมอยู่ในระดับมาก เมื่อพิจารณาตามแต่ละขั้นตอนพบว่า ขั้นการประเมินทางเลือก และขั้นการประเมินหลังการซื้ออยู่ในระดับมากที่สุด จากการทดสอบสมมติฐาน ทัศนคติของผู้บริโภคต่อการสื่อสารบุคลิกภาพห้าองค์ประกอบของพนักงานขายเครื่องสำอางมีความสัมพันธ์กับความต้องการซื้อของผู้บริโภคไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน อยู่ในระดับน้อย เมื่อพิจารณาความสัมพันธ์ของบุคลิกภาพแต่ละแบบของพนักงานขายเครื่องสำอางกับความต้องการซื้อของผู้บริโภค บุคลิกภาพแบบแสดงตัว แบบประนีประนอม แบบมีจิตสำนึก แบบเปิดรับประสบการณ์ มีความสัมพันธ์กับความต้องการซื้อของผู้บริโภคไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน

Mass mediated emotional experiences are central to late modern subjectivity. Narrative storytelling creates public sites where audiences encounter and negotiate shared sociocultural circumstances rendered in aesthetic terms. Popular narratives move us by providing access, through felt recognition, to aspects of our emotional existence that would otherwise remain inexpressible. Using examples from film, this chapter explores how emotions as public events, constituted as part of collectively experienced social, cultural, and historical conditions, are enacted or realized through narrative media.

Scientists debunked the belief that breast cancer is always viral with the mid-90s discovery of the first hereditary genetic mutation linked to a significantly higher-than average chance of breast and ovarian cancer. This genetic condition, called Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC), passes the mutation from generation to generation in a family. Thousands of variations of such mutations exist, and carriers account for 10 to 15% of all breast cancer, and up to 20% of ovarian (Childers et al., 2017). This study will explore female representation and conceptualization of nature in dystopian narratives by examining dystopian films. The study is guided by film theory and ecofeminism to investigate themes of domination of both nature and women. The main goal is to examine the structure, themes, dialogue, and visuals in the films to explore the underlying essence of dystopian narratives and examine roles of reproduction and motherhood of female characters. As the pool of eligible recipients continues to grow, understanding service system utilization and barriers can help ensure very old adults can access support from their communities when needed. Mounting research demonstrates that investment in community-based services to ensure seniors remain independent translates to saved government dollars. As a contributing researcher of a multi-year county-wide older adult needs assessment in Monroe County, Michigan, data collected from 1,870 people revealed a communication disjuncture between seniors and service providers. In this study, we explore the ways in which Intercultural Communication instructors uniquely experience emotion with work and how this influences their pedagogical approaches to this course. We collected and analyzed interviews with 21 intercultural communication educators across U.S. colleges and universities. We present findings related to the types of resistance present and/or emerging in the intercultural communication classroom, emotional responses to resistance, and strategies for managing and negotiating emotion with work in the Intercultural Communication classroom. We end with discussing implications for teacher training programs designed for the Intercultural Communication classroom.

Courses in gender communication are designed to enable students to examine the role of gender and gender identity in everyday communication. To aid them to understand gender communication, they should be exposed to at least three foundational areas and supporting content. Sex and gender differences, the social construction of gender, and theoretical gender lenses (biological, psychological, and critical/cultural) are critical foundations that students should grasp to recognize the complexity of gender and gender communication.
