Stigmatization And Mental Illness: The Communication Of Social Identity Prototypes Through Diagnosis Labels, Justin Samuel Leverett

This study tested whether participants exposed to a vignette describing an individual experiencing symptoms of depression, which included only the specific diagnosis label of "depression," would report significantly less stigmatized responses than participants exposed to an otherwise identical vignette which included only the non-specific diagnosis label "mental illness." The study is grounded in past research on stigmatization of mental illness and is informed by three theoretical frameworks, the social identity perspective, attribution theory, and labeling theory. In 2005, 16 years after the initial publication of the Basic Communication Course Annual, Hunt, Novak, Semlak, and Meyer (2005) conducted the first synthesis of research published in the Basic Communication Course Annual. Since then, the Annual has used a variety of methods to enhance our understanding of the pedagogy, learning, and assessment of the basic course. Thirteen years later, the second synthesis of the Annual adds new research topics to the conversation, evaluates trends in past content, and looks to the future of the Annual to examine the themes that will drive research over the next several …

If we are not introverts ourselves, we have colleagues, supervisors, family members, friends or children who are. Nike's Corporate Social Advocacy (Csa) Practices As Related To Strategic Issues Management (Sim) And Threats To Organizational Legitimacy, Eve Heffron

This research examined how corporate social advocacy (CSA) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts impacted perceptions of authenticity. Using an experimental survey, participants were randomly exposed to Nike's actions related to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement via mock-online news articles. Participants completed a survey that contained Likert-type scale items regarding attitudes (perceived corporate intent, perceived authenticity, brand trust, and brand credibility) and behavioral intentions (word of mouth intentions (WOM), and purchase intention (PI)). Results indicated that positive attitudes significantly increased when Nike implemented an action step after taking a public stance on a controversial social-political issue. The Unacceptable Rise: An Investigation Of School Shootings In The United States, Tracy Gulliford

This research study examined teachers' understanding of risk factors and characteristics of potential perpetrators of school shootings, as well as the steps to take when they are identified in students. Participants completed a survey that contained Likert-type scale items regarding self efficacy and open-ended questions regarding school violence experiences. A mixed methods analysis revealed three primary conclusions. First, teachers have high levels of self-efficacy regarding the importance of and ability to deal effectively with troubled students. This conclusion suggests that teachers do internalize the relevance of this issue to them. Second, this study revealed a gap in terms of the …

My dissertation makes an argument for a decolonial move in rhetorical memory studies to more ethically account for the ways in which colonized women in the Global South, like Puerto Rican poet and revolutionary Julia de Burgos, have resisted the trauma colonization has systemically wrought against gendered, raced, and classed bodies. Building from a decolonization methodology, and theoretically situating my argument in Chicana, Latina, and decolonial feminisms, I argue Burgos's poetry both bears faithful witness to the violence of US imperial rule and articulates the dangers of a Puerto Rican nationalist movement built on a Spanish colonial foundation. HIV has been a pandemic since the 1980s with 70 million people infected since the beginning, about 35 million people have died of complications resulting from HIV, and an estimated 36.9 million people living with HIV in 2017 (WHO, "HIV and AIDS"). Many organizations around the world have tried to tackle this issue, however most of these organizations are based in the West or have Western organizations holding the majority of power and control. People in these organizations have the intention of ending the spread of HIV, but they also sometimes spread Western ideology.

In this research inquiry, Tyler uses a metacognitive style of reflection walking the reader through her personal connections to topic selection and research process before presenting what she discovered in medical journal articles on the topic of using vaccines for Alzheimer’s treatment and prevention. In closely reviewing journal articles and their findings, Tyler is able to make comments about the challenges of developing a vaccine appropriate to humans (as opposed to the mice trials she reads about,) and the complexity of high failure rates in the past. Drawing on self-categorization theory, this article examines the indirect effects of gender salience and prototypicality on friendship potential through increasing liking of a female interlocutor. We manipulated biographies of the fictitious interlocutor to change perceptions of prototypicality. For women, gender salience interacted with prototypicality to directly predict liking and the desire to become friends with the interlocutor indirectly through liking. Specifically, there was an interaction between prototypicality and gender salience, such that as gender salience increased, the prototypical interlocutor was liked significantly more and had higher friendship potential. For men, the same relationships did not appear. We discuss the implications …

As video game technology has evolved, so too has the gendered nature of the video gaming subculture. This chapter characterizes the broad cultural context of gaming and the shifting social patterns of gendered game play. By reviewing existing research at the intersection of gender, gaming, and consumption, we identify three primary research opportunities to build upon existing research: understanding consumers’ lived experiences in the gendered gaming subculture, exploring the gendered gaming marketplace (e.g., shopping, advertising), and investigating the systemic, structural, and cultural underpinnings of gaming. Visible/Invisible: Female Astronauts And Technology In Star Trek: Discovery And National Geographic’S Mars, Amanda R. Keeler

This article examines the newest television programme in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Discovery (2017–) and National Geographic’s part-documentary, part-fictional series Mars (2016–). I argue that Discovery and Mars make visible the depiction of developing technology and a breadth and depth of female astronaut characters, two elements that have been historically marginalised in sf narratives such as Star Trek: The Original Series (1966–9). Discovery and Mars both emphasise the purposeful centrality of female characters and their positions of authority as female astronauts and ship leaders. Each programme also foregrounds the representation and framing of technology, emphasising the not-yet-perfect science …

Background: Internet is becoming an increasingly common tool for survey research, particularly among “hidden” or vulnerable populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM). Web-based research has many advantages for participants and researchers, but fraud can present a significant threat to data integrity.

Objective: The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate fraud detection strategies in a Web-based survey of young MSM and describe new protocols to improve fraud detection in Web-based survey research.

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่เป็นอุปสรรคในการสร้างความเข้าใจเรื่องการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศ ศึกษาการรับรู้ ทัศนคติ และพฤติกรรมของนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยเกี่ยวกับการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศ และนำมาออกแบบต้นแบบบอร์ดเกมเพื่อสร้างความเข้าใจเรื่องการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศสำหรับนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัย รวมทั้งเพื่อประเมินผลต้นแบบบอร์ดเกมเพื่อสร้างความเข้าใจเรื่องการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศสำหรับนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัย ใช้ระเบียนวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative Method) ได้แก่ การวิเคราะห์เอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก และการสนทนากลุ่ม ผลการศึกษาพบว่า สถานการณ์เกี่ยวกับการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศกลุ่มนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยมีความเข้าใจเพียงผิวเผิน ไม่ได้ตระหนักในความสำคัญของการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศสอดคล้องกับข้อค้นพบเกี่ยวปัจจัยต่าง ๆ ที่เป็นอุปสรรคในการสร้างความเข้าใจเรื่องความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศ ได้แก่ ระบบวิธีคิดเรื่องเพศที่กำกับโดยระบบคิดแบบชายเป็นใหญ่ และวัฒนธรรมอำนาจนิยม มายาคติของความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศ แบบฉบับทางเพศแบบดั้งเดิม รูปแบบการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจที่ขัดกับธรรมชาติของการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ และการขาดแคลนพื้นที่การสื่อสารเรื่องเพศเชิงบวก ต้นแบบบอร์ดเกมที่พัฒนาขึ้นจากการวิจัยครั้งนี้ เรียกว่า Consentopia เป็นบอร์ดเกมเพื่อการเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศ ผลการประเมินต้นแบบบอร์ดเกม พบว่าเป็นสื่อการเรียนรู้ที่ช่วยสร้างพื้นที่การสื่อสารเรื่องเพศเชิงบวกที่ครอบคลุมหลายมิติ ตลอดจนสามารถนำไปใช้ในการฝึกฝนทักษะการสื่อสารความยินยอมพร้อมใจทางเพศ

การวิจัยเชิงสำรวจในครั้งนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาพฤติกรรมผู้ปกครองต่อการเรียนรู้ของเด็กปฐมวัยผ่าน YouTube รวมถึงศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างทัศนคติและพฤติกรรมของผู้ปกครองต่อการรับชม YouTube ของเด็ก โดยเก็บข้อมูลกับผู้ปกครอง อายุระหว่าง 26 ถึง 56 ปี และมีบุตรหลานที่กำลังศึกษาในชั้นอนุบาลปีที่ 1 ถึง 3 จำนวน 217 คน ผลการวิจัยพบว่า โดยรวมผู้ปกครองมีทัศนคติเชิงบวกต่อการรับชม YouTube ของเด็ก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งทัศนคติด้านการรับชม YouTube ทำให้เกิดการเรียนรู้ใหม่ๆ พัฒนาการด้านภาษา และพัฒนาการจากความรู้ต่างประเทศ และผู้ปกครองส่วนใหญ่มีพฤติกรรมเชิงบวกต่อการรับชม YouTube โดยเน้นไปที่ด้านการให้ความรู้กับเด็กเกี่ยวกับสื่อ นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า ทัศนคติรวมและพฤติกรรมของผู้ปกครองต่อการรับชม YouTube ของเด็กมีความสัมพันธ์กันในเชิงบวกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ

Crisis communication systems (CCS) in educational settings have been challenged by mass casualty events including shootings, natural disasters, and health outbreaks in the United States. The U.S. federal government and the U.S. Department of Education have created safety and security instructions to manage these complex and diverse security issues, yet they do not address the role of school leaders within a CCS. Communication styles used during divorce-related conversations may negatively influence the quality of parent-child relationships. Researchers have not examined how communication styles used in divorce-related communications affect parent-offspring relationships in same-sex parented families. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to examine offspring perceptions of how divorce-related communication styles affected relationships between the children and their same-sex parents. The research question for this study addressed how the perceived communication styles of same-sex parents in divorce-related conversations influence the parent-offspring relationship. Mental illness is a pervasive health epidemic in the United States and worldwide, and available data suggest that mentally ill adults are statistically more likely to be parents than non-parents. The prevalence and continued growth of parental mental illness means that millions of children in the United States have a parent with some form of mental health issues.
