The Efforts Of Advertisers To Reduce Advertising Rates During The Depression, Marcelle Verlinden May 1933

The Efforts Of Advertisers To Reduce Advertising Rates During The Depression, Marcelle Verlinden

Bachelors’ Theses

Immediately following the decline of the value of business in the fall of 1929, an attack was made by national advertisers and chain store representatives, rather than the local merchants, to reduce advertising rates in newspapers. With the lengthening of the depression into three years, the tide of advertisers demanding reduction of rates has grown gradually stronger. With the continued growth of the popularity of radio advertising, national advertisers and chain store organizations have threatened to further decrease the amount of their newspaper advertising and to turn more strongly to radio advertising.

Department Store Advertising, James Fleming Apr 1933

Department Store Advertising, James Fleming

Bachelors’ Theses

The primary purpose in the writing of this thesis on "Department Store Advertising" is to give the department store viewpoint in the conduct of advertising, with the newspaper as a focal medium. Volumes have been written regarding the newspaper's side in this kind of advertising, but the advertisers have received little mention. It is to this end that a study was made of the conduct of advertising by these retail establishments and this thesis will embody the findings.

Newspaper Gag Laws, Robert J. Goetz May 1931

Newspaper Gag Laws, Robert J. Goetz

Bachelors’ Theses

It is almost Inevitable that a writer should be forced to use as much vigilance and care in the exclusion of extraneous matter as he does in the corralling and presentation of facts, relevant and necessary to the proper exposition of his topic. Libel, the right of privacy, and freedom of the press are all but inextricably woven with the subject of Newspaper Gag Laws; yet to swerve excessively from a restricted outline would in all probability be seriously detrimental, if not wholly disastrous, to the task at hand. The writer believes that no amount of personal criticism would favorably …

The Influence Of The Radio Broadcast Of News Events Upon The Newspaper, Frances Agnes Murphy May 1930

The Influence Of The Radio Broadcast Of News Events Upon The Newspaper, Frances Agnes Murphy

Bachelors’ Theses

Radio broadcasting and the newspaper overlap each other in several ways. Not only does the radio, by its very nature, derive its revenue in the same way as the newspaper gains the greater part of its funds, but it is daily increasing its score of followers by reporting such events as heretofore were confined to the newspaper alone. Both the division of advertising between the newspaper and the radio and their influence on each other as disseminators of news are problems which bear thorough investigation. Because of the magnitude of each angle of similarity, however, only the latter will be …

The Place Of The House Organ In The Business World, Joseph W. Berg Jun 1929

The Place Of The House Organ In The Business World, Joseph W. Berg

Bachelors’ Theses

The business of producing house organs is intimately a part of advertising and is precariously linked up with the problem of salesmanship. More generously house organs are the consolidated specialized effort of producing the wide spread use of an advertised product. It is well to consider the construction of this widely misunderstood term involving direct advertising, from the foundation of advertising in general.

Advertising is an art older than history, though in its present· forms it is rather recent. The newest of all its developments, of course, is that phase in which we are most interested since it involves the …

The Metropolitan Newspaper's Promotion Enterprise, Harry A. Friedman Jun 1929

The Metropolitan Newspaper's Promotion Enterprise, Harry A. Friedman

Bachelors’ Theses

In the heterogeniety of modern civilization, the newspaper commands a position of prominence rivaled only by the greatest of the industrial and commercial corporations. Too many idealists, however, fail to comprehend the really stupenduos growth of the newspaper as a business. To the idealist, the newspaper is the champion of public rights, the defender of the weak, the voice of the people, the combatant of all that is evil. It is granted, of course, that the newspaper is all of that and more, but primarily the newspaper must be a highly organized business before it can function in its idealistic …

The Passing Of Editorial Leadership, Lucy K. Doles Apr 1929

The Passing Of Editorial Leadership, Lucy K. Doles

Bachelors’ Theses

American newspapers have gone through many eras of marked change. In no country has the press enjoyed the freedom it has here. In no other country has it wielded the influence it has here. In no other country .have as sweeping changes of policy taken place as have here.

The Attitude Of The Metropolitan Daily Toward Neighborhood Advertising, John William Conroy Jun 1928

The Attitude Of The Metropolitan Daily Toward Neighborhood Advertising, John William Conroy

Bachelors’ Theses

The material for this thesis has been gathered from personal letters, accompanied by a questionnaire, which were sent to the advertising managers of thirty-five newspapers throughout the country and Canada.

After a thorough investigation it was found that there are no books that dwell directly on the subject and the questionnaire and letter that follow directly after the bibliography were sent to gain the information.

Many of the advertising managers went to a lengthy discussion on the subject but the majority of answers were returned, written on the back of the questionnaire. These were very meager in the information that …

The Trade Press As An Advertising Medium, Edwin J. Nally Jun 1927

The Trade Press As An Advertising Medium, Edwin J. Nally

Bachelors’ Theses

"Good advertising consists in making a favorable impression on a possible customer."

That the above statement or definition is true the majority of modern business men will agree, but as to the means or media of reaching the possible customer they will disagree. There are those who claim that this or that particular media is the best and most effective means of reaching a certain clientele or market, and there are almost as many more who will claim that one of the other mediums is more effective.

The Industrial Advertising Dollar, Arthur H. Nicolaus Jun 1926

The Industrial Advertising Dollar, Arthur H. Nicolaus

Bachelors’ Theses

Although our time may be called the era of big business and extensive advertising, I believe that the day of intensive advertising is still young. Millions have been expended on placing selling copy before the reader and a surprising amount of that expenditure has been spent without any economic calculation of its return.

Business Value Of Trade Journalism, Arthur Joseph Hantschel Jan 1923

Business Value Of Trade Journalism, Arthur Joseph Hantschel

Bachelors’ Theses

Tightened competition, increased specialistic production and service, demand that a large field be covered thoroughly with specific knowledge and information on marketable goods and service in order to enable producers and manufacturers to increase sales, or to maintain a consistent output of any product; this requires that all possible avenues of distribution be utilized, some of these avenues extending thousands of miles from the center of production or manufacture, into foreign territory, and in competition with many articles of the same kind or related utility. Such thorough knowledge and information is supplied to those who most require it through the …
