Genetic Counseling For Adult-Onset Neurogenetic Conditions In Hispanic/Latine Communities: A Qualitative Study Of Barriers And Facilitators From Hispanic/Latine Genetic Counselors' Perspectives, Elizabeth Aleman
All Publications
Hispanic/Latine (H/Le) individuals, despite being at higher risk for certain adult-onset neurological conditions (AONCs) compared to non-Hispanic white individuals, experience delays in accessing neurologic health services and are significantly underrepresented in clinical research for conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. While existing studies have highlighted barriers to genetic health services for H/Le groups, there is limited research on their experiences with adult-onset conditions beyond cancer. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of H/Le genetic counselors on factors that influence adult neurogenetic counseling (NGC) access for H/Le individuals, and suggestions for expanding access as subject matter experts of …

Patient responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors can be influenced by the gastrointestinal microbiome. Mouse models can be used to study microbiome-host crosstalk, yet their utility is constrained by substantial anatomical, functional, immunological and microbial differences between mice and humans. Here we show that a gut-on-a-chip system mimicking the architecture and functionality of the human intestine by including faecal microbiome and peristaltic-like movements recapitulates microbiome-host interactions and predicts responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with melanoma. The system is composed of a vascular channel seeded with human microvascular endothelial cells and an intestinal channel with intestinal organoids derived from human …

Dysfunctions in the immune system and alterations in the microbiome composition following SARS-CoV-2 infection contribute to persistent neurological issues observed in long COVID-19 survivors. We hypothesize that alterations in the gut microbiome composition and peripheral inflammatory profile following COVID-19 may play pivotal roles in behavior changes among individuals experiencing long-term illness. This cross-sectional study included a sample of post-COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 subjects. We assessed the presence of psychiatric conditions utilizing standardized diagnostic criteria, Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D), Biological Rhythms in Neuropsychiatry Assessment Interview (BRIAN), and Functional Assessment Short Test (FAST). Plasma samples …

The Density Of Virgin, Consumer And Environmental Plastics: An Investigation Using Gas Displacement Pycnometry, Andrew Turner, Katie Jones, Montserrat Filella
The Density Of Virgin, Consumer And Environmental Plastics: An Investigation Using Gas Displacement Pycnometry, Andrew Turner, Katie Jones, Montserrat Filella
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Density is a fundamental property of plastics and is particularly significant in determining the transport and fate of waste plastics that enter aquatic systems. However, densities are rarely determined in the environmental literature and values employed for modelling or impacts are often unsourced or derived from secondary databases. In this study, we employ helium displacement pycnometry to determine the skeletal densities of non-porous plastics whose polymer composition had been established from manufacturer's data, resin codes or Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Two independent, collaborative laboratories, providing measurements within 3.5 % of each other and with precisions of <1 % (as relative standard deviation), analysed a total of 42 virgin, consumer and environmental plastics consisting of ten common polymer types. Measured densities of plastics in all categories, and most notably for polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride, were often outside the ranges reported by a comprehensive online resource. Possible reasons for discrepancies include the occurrence of dense additives (evaluated by X-ray fluorescence analysis), the presence of inaccessible microscopic pores below a laminated surface, contamination of the main polymer by a secondary one, and structural changes on weathering. Regardless of precise causes, most results suggest that individual polymers have a broader range of densities than is generally published or considered in the literature. Accordingly, and in particular where buoyancy is critical, more precise, sample-specific measurements are recommended.

Handling Socio-Institutional Traps–Inertia Towards Australia’S Resilient International Development Aid Programs In The Solomon Islands, Mark Opoku Amankwa, Kwadwo Adusei-Asante, Alina Novak
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study critically examines how donor’s aid delivery approach, entrenched socio-institutional dynamics, and the Solomon Islands’ complex political economy create persistent barriers to Australia’s aid programming. Through a desktop research approach, institutional trap–inertia theory is applied to analyze how Australia’s aid efforts and political structures perpetuate aid inertia. The study critiques both Australia’s aid delivery approach and the internal governance challenges in a cohesive society of the SI, highlighting their intertwined roles in impeding Australia’s aid programming. The article proffers context-driven, locally adaptive strategies aimed at overcoming institutional traps and fostering more resilient and effective aid interventions.

This paper presents an in-depth investigation into applying a frequency domain Volterra series nonlinear equalizer (FD-VNLE) to mitigate nonlinear impairments in optical communication systems operating at high speeds. The study aims to address the issues presented by nonlinear effects, specifically self-phase modulation (SPM), which significantly degrades system performance at higher power levels. A comprehensive mathematical model of the FD-VNLE was developed to provide theoretical insight, while its implementation was carried out using MATLAB co-simulated with OptiSystem. The performance of the 40 Gbps dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) system was rigorously evaluated, focusing on critical performance metrics like bit error …
Investigation And Prediction Of Excessive Water Production In Bottom Water-Drive Naturally Fractured Reservoirs Using Machine And Deep Learning, Sami Abderraouf Belkhir
Investigation And Prediction Of Excessive Water Production In Bottom Water-Drive Naturally Fractured Reservoirs Using Machine And Deep Learning, Sami Abderraouf Belkhir
Theses
Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (NFRs) are characterized by dual-porosity and dual-permeability systems, posing significant challenges in managing water production due to highly conductive fracture networks that facilitate rapid water migration from bottom aquifers, often bypassing oil stored in the matrix, thus resulting in early water breakthrough and water channeling phenomena. The main objective of this thesis is to develop and validate deep learning and machine learning models to predict water production, water breakthrough time (tbt), and ultimate water cut (WCult) in NFRs, thereby enabling more effective reservoir management strategies. This work also aims to evaluate the sensitivity of water behavior to …

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance made by the pyrolysis of organic material from agricultural and forestry waste. While biochar is well documented for altering soil physicochemical conditions, few studies have investigated its possible effects on the management of arthropod pests. Tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, FAW) are specialist and generalist insect herbivores respectively, that can cause significant defoliation in natural and agricultural ecosystems. In this study, we examined whether walnut shell biochar can affect growth and development of these herbivores. Specifically, we investigated how biochar influences parameters such as mass gain, length …

Investigation Of Retention And Dehydration Of Preformed Particle Gel For Conformance Control In Fractured Carbonates, Abdulaziz A. Almakimi, Abdullah O. Almansour, Junchen Liu, Baojun Bai, Ibnelwaleed A. Hussein
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Preformed particle gel (PPG) treatment has proved to be among the most effective methods to reduce excessive water production in fractured reservoirs. The blocking ability of PPGs to fractures or fracture-like features is highly dependent on injected gel properties and volume. Gel dehydration during extrusion through fracture is common and has a considerable effect on gel properties, transport, and plugging efficiency. As the gel particles propagate through the fracture, continuous dehydration is often associated and causes the gel to concentrate and require high-pressure gradients to move. Dehydration might be desirable to a certain limit because it can help to form …

Revisiting “Mandatory Mediation: An Oxymoron?” Advancing Access To Civil Justice Through Mandatory Adr, Dorcas Quek Anderson
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Access to civil justice, a concept integral to the rule of law, has been an enduring concern in many countries. One prominent strategy to enhance access to civil justice entails the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods prior to court adjudication. In this regard, efforts to embed ADR within the court system have intensified in both England and Wales and Singapore. In Singapore, the parties have a duty to consider ADR prior to and during civil proceedings. More significantly, the courts have been empowered to order parties to attempt ADR. In a similar vein, the English Court of Appeal …

Tight junction complexes are crucial features of brain endothelial cells, as they restrict the paracellular route across the blood–brain barrier. Tight junction disruption has been observed in conjunction with numerous diseases of the CNS. In such cases, the organization or integrity of cell–cell junctions may be analyzed with a variety of automated computer programs that quantitatively assess junction images. Here, we directly compare two previously developed python-based programs—JAnaP and IJOQ— for the semi- or fully automated analysis of tight junctions in human stem cell-derived brain-like endothelial cells. Cells were infected with S. pneumoniae and S. agalactiae to initiate junction disruption, …

An excipient present in commercial formulations of fumagillin (an antibiotic used in apiculture for the control of Nosema disease) toxic dicyclohexylamine is found in beeswax samples. There is a need for a reliable analytical method without the use of MS for analysis of this compound. A reversed-phase gradient method was developed for the analysis using a simple extraction procedure followed by low temperature elimination of interfering compounds. Since dicyclohexylamine is lacking a chromophore, an evaporative light scatter detector was used in this analysis. Several challenges of quantitative analysis using an evaporative light scatter detector were addressed. The reported method was …

Engineering Microphysiological Systems To Investigate Cellular Responses To Biophysical Cues In Human Tissue Microenvironments, Mehran Mansouri
Theses
Cells constantly sense and respond to biophysical cues in their microenvironment. Understanding how they interpret these mechanical signals is essential for advancing tissue modeling, studying disease mechanisms, and developing more predictive in vitro platforms. This dissertation presents a series of engineered microphysiological systems (MPS) designed to investigate how mechanical stimuli shape cellular behavior in distinct human tissue microenvironments. In Aim 1, I developed a reconfigurable microfluidic platform that mimics key features of human vascular barriers. This system supports the integration of porous membranes, 3D hydrogels, and flow channels, enabling precise control over both mechanical and biochemical cues. The modularity of …

Modeling Femtosecond Laser Interaction With Glass For Optical Fabrication, Nathan Klein
Theses
The fabrication of precision optics is critical for a wide range of applications, including biosensors, virtual and augmented reality, medical imaging, and micro-electronics. However, it is challenging to meet the demands of these applications with conventional chemical and mechanical fabrication methods, as they can introduce chemical waste, mid-spatial-frequency errors, and subsurface damage that degrades image quality. Femtosecond lasers have emerged as a promising alternative, offering fast, non-contact, and chemical-free machining with single digit nanometer precision. This thesis presents a computational model designed to investigate the interaction process between a high-intensity femtosecond laser pulse and dielectric material. A pulse propagation model …

When Does Anxiety Increase Attempts To Spend Time And Money Efficiently?, Shruti Koley, Caleb Warren, Suresh Ramanathan
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Consumers today are anxious. How does this anxiety influence how they spend their time and money? Five experiments demonstrate that when consumers feel anxious because they are making insufficient progress toward a goal, they attempt to use their resources more efficiently while making decisions unrelated to the goal. This desire to be efficient makes them more likely to (a) choose jobs that offer higher payout rates rather than a higher total payout, (b) perform tasks simultaneously rather than sequentially (i.e., multitask), and (c) select products and activities that cost less money and time than usual (i.e., price and time discounts). …

Post-germinative growth in plants is controlled by sucrose mobilization from the endosperm. Regulation of this process, however, is not fully understood. Transcriptional suppression of the rice vacuolar H+ translocating pyrophosphatase (V-PPase) referred to as VPP5 led to enhanced starch content in mature grains. However, vpp5 suppressed lines displayed a slower post-germinative growth rescuable by sucrose, indicating inefficient sucrose mobilization from the endosperm. Biochemical and gene expression analyses showed a slower rate of starch to sucrose conversion and altered expression of the key starch utilization pathway genes. We hypothesized that the modulation of metabolic activities in the vpp5 lines was based …
