The Identification Of Montana Clays By X-Ray Analysis, David Stephen Malyevac May 1959

The Identification Of Montana Clays By X-Ray Analysis, David Stephen Malyevac

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purpose of this study is to identify the various Montana clay minerals by means of X-ray diffraction. The ultimate aim of this investigation is to identify the different clay mixtures through an analysis of their respective diffraction patterns, and diffraction patterns obtained after various chemical and thermal treatments.

Progress Report On Calcium Chloride Maintained Traffic Bound Roads, George R. Laughlin May 1959

Progress Report On Calcium Chloride Maintained Traffic Bound Roads, George R. Laughlin

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The object of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of calcium chloride in maintaining traffic-bound roads. Various theses propose that the use of calcium chloride will minimize the loss of granular material from the base by reducing attrition and dusting; thereby aiding in stabilization. Such theses further suggest that when the proper amount of binder or soil mortar is present, calcium chloride will preserve a more uniform moisture condition within the soil-mortar and thus hold the aggregate in place and in a more stable condition. The primary purpose of the study is not to test these theses, but rather …

The Effect Of Capillary Bleeding On The Compressive Strength Of Concrete, James L. Cramer Apr 1959

The Effect Of Capillary Bleeding On The Compressive Strength Of Concrete, James L. Cramer

Civil Engineering ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect that bleeding has upon the compressive strength of concrete. Keeping in mind that the compressive strength of a concrete depends highly upon the water, cement ratio, it was reasonable to expect that the changing of the water content of the fresh concrete by bleeding would have a definite effect on the final compressive strength. While tests upon tests and studies upon studies have been made of cement and concrete, few, if any, have been concerned with this problem.

Report Of Engineering Research With Recommendations For Strengthening The Program, Vaughn E. Hansen Jan 1959

Report Of Engineering Research With Recommendations For Strengthening The Program, Vaughn E. Hansen

Reports

Progress of Engineering Research: The growth initiated with the reorganization of the Engineering Experiment Station in 1957-58 has been stready and consistant through 1958-59. Every sign points to continued expansion through the coming year. This growth is shown in Table 1. The number of active projects this year has increased to nineteen, the funds allocated for Engineering research were $53,861 plus $17,826 to contract research, exclusive of approximately $75,000 in the Agricultural Experiment Station. The number of staff members engaged in research is now twelve. Contract research money has been obtained to finance four projects which were financed previously with …

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson Jan 1959

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson

Masters Theses

"The Vierendeel Truss, or Rigid Frame Truss, was first introduced by Professor Arthur Vierendeel in Belgium at the beginning of the century. The Vierendeel Truss differs from the more common triangulated truss in that it contains no diagonal members. The members of the truss are joined rigidly together and each member is required to transmit bending, shear and direct stress.

Professor Vierendeel claimed that Vierendeel Trusses are 20 to 30 percent cheaper than the conventional type of truss. This statement has been challenged by many who believe that this type of truss is fundamentally inferior to the more conventional type. …

Field Application Of The Membrane Filter Method For Bacteriological Quality Determination Of Water, Charles Liston Gambill Jan 1959

Field Application Of The Membrane Filter Method For Bacteriological Quality Determination Of Water, Charles Liston Gambill

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the definite advantages to be realized when using the membrane filter method as an accepted procedure for the bacteriological analysis of a water; and specifically when used under emergency or field conditions such as military units in the field. These same advantages would apply to Civil Defense and other such agencies when operating under emergency or field conditions.

Data from actual tests showing techniques, equipment and procedures used and augmented by other data available from research papers will be utilized"--Introduction, page 2.

The Effects Of Fly-Ash On Dynamic Modulus Of Elasticity Of A Concrete Mortar, Bill L. Atchley Jan 1959

The Effects Of Fly-Ash On Dynamic Modulus Of Elasticity Of A Concrete Mortar, Bill L. Atchley

Masters Theses

"Over the last few years an increasing amount of interest has been shown in the use of prestressed concrete. As is true in many new methods of design or construction, the properties of existing materials to be used sometimes fail to meet all the desirable characteristics, and certain modifications might be advantageous. This is certainly true of prestressed concrete design and construction, in which a lower modulus of elasticity accompanied by a minimum loss in strength would be desirable. If a lower modulus of elasticity could be obtained for concrete, a lower prestressing load could be used and still maintain …
