Stabilization Of Swelling Clay Soil By Additions Of Calcium Hydroxide And Calcium Oxide, Anthony Diler Jan 1959

Stabilization Of Swelling Clay Soil By Additions Of Calcium Hydroxide And Calcium Oxide, Anthony Diler

Masters Theses

"As a study of all types of stabilization would be very lengthy, it was decided to make the object of this research the determination of the effect of the addition of different percentages of calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 on the physical characteristics of a silty swelling sodium montmorillionite clay. The purpose of this addition is to flocculate the clay by utilizing a base exchange between the sodium and calcium ions, and thus change the physical characteristics of the soil. The soil by itself has the characteristics of a fat clay, that is it can be broken …

Regulation Of River Bank Development Through Flood Plain Zoning, William James O'Neill Jan 1959

Regulation Of River Bank Development Through Flood Plain Zoning, William James O'Neill

Masters Theses

"The triangular pattern of protection, evacuation and flood plain zoning, as the only truly effective and comprehensive approach to proper flood control, is substantiated in practically all technical publications on this subject by economic and engineering leaders. Yet in actual practice, at the present time, flood plain zoning is not being actively applied by any federal flood control agency and by only one of the forty-nine states faced with this common problem. This lack of direct application was probably best described recently by Walter B. Langbein, Water Resources Division Engineer, U. S. Geological Survey when he said, "Flood Plain Zoning, …

Application Of The Hveem Stabilometer To The Testing Of Open-Graded Bituminous Mixtures, R. A. Hannan

JTRP Technical Reports

This laboratory investigation was conducted with the purposeof determining the applicability of the Hveem Stabilometer to the testing of open-graded bituminous mixtures.

The study was divided into two major sections. The first of these investigated the validity of the Stabilometer displacement measurement when applied to open-graded specimens having large surface air voids. The second portion of the study had two specific purposes: (l) to investigate the stress-strain characteristics of open-graded mixturestested in the Hveem Stabilometer and (2) to determine whether surface voids on the ends of Stabilometer test specimens influenced Hveem stability values.

To check the validity of the displacement …

Re-Evaluation Of The Kentucky Flexible Pavement Design Criterion, William B. Drake, James H. Havens Jan 1959

Re-Evaluation Of The Kentucky Flexible Pavement Design Criterion, William B. Drake, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Prior to 1948, the criterion in Kentucky for designing the thickness of bituminous pavements was based upon a modified laboratory CBR and the 1942 curves developed by the California Department of Highways. In 1948, the Materials Research Laboratory reported: "An Investigation of Field and Laboratory Methods for Evaluating Sub-grade Support in the Design of Highway Flexible Pavement." Included in that report as a recommended method of thickness design for use in Kentucky was a set of curves based upon an empirical relationship between minimum laboratory CBR and observed pavement performance. These five curves accounted for traffic groups up to 10,000,000 …

An Investigation Of High-Strength, Deformed Steel Bars For Concrete Reinforcement Part Ii, Sidney A. Guralnick, George Winter

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION The previous phase of this investigation of high-strength steel for concrete reinforcement is described in Report No. TSR-4730-7l46, which was released in July, 1957. This previous testing program was designed to provide information on the following topics, among others: (a) The shear (primarily) and flexural (secondarily) strength of restrained Tee-beams reinforced with steel of approximately 80 ksi yield point for main reinforcement and with standard steel for web reinforcement. (b) The formation of diagonal tension cracks and flexural cracks and the width of flexure and shear cracks at various loads and particularly at "design loads" (say, half the ultimate …

Skid Prevention Studies In Kentucky, James H. Havens Sep 1958

Skid Prevention Studies In Kentucky, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Laboratory apparatus, consisting essentially of a torque generator and a torque meter, in which a rubber annulus is driven against a plane surface of a rock core or pavement specimen, as in an ordinary friction clutch, was used to study variations in the coefficients of friction with respect to texture and material characteristics. Dry friction coefficients were found to be rather high in magnitude. and fairly constant throughout wide variations in surface textures. In contrast, wet friction coefficients were very high for rough textures but very low for polished surfaces. Wet friction values correlated in an approximately hyperbolic manner with …

Differential Thermal Analysis Of The Freeze-Thaw Mechanisms In Concrete, James H. Havens, Knox R. Burchett Jul 1958

Differential Thermal Analysis Of The Freeze-Thaw Mechanisms In Concrete, James H. Havens, Knox R. Burchett

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The freezing of water in concrete may create highly disruptive internal forces, depending upon the degree of saturation of the voids and the extent of the resulting dilations. Heretofore, it has not been possible to measure the internal pressures accompanying freezing; and it is this aspect of the automatic freeze-thaw testing of concrete with which the present study was concerned. By the use of thermocouples, imbedded in concrete and referenced to an ice-water bath, it was possible to plot, on an automatic multivolt potentiometer recorder, an isothermal phase change for the absorbed water, and to demonstrate a depression of the …

Construction Of A Heavy Duty Military Airfield On Permafrost., Owen N. O'Leary

Civil Engineering ETDs

An examination of the map of the northern hemisphere will show that the two great population areas of opposing ideologies are located across the arctic regions from each other. This fact has been recognized by the U.S. military authorities since the early 1940’s, and an effort has been made to locate military forces in these regions to act as a possible deterrent to any aggressive action. The nature and geography of this region generally preclude any military forces except combat airfield. The most outstanding and possible only example of a major military airfield located entirely on permafrost material in these …

A Study Of The Use Of A Local Fly Ash In Concrete Mixes, Frank D. Whitney Apr 1958

A Study Of The Use Of A Local Fly Ash In Concrete Mixes, Frank D. Whitney

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The widespread use of powdered coal in industrial furnaces has, since its introduction in the 1930's, produced considerable increases in efficiency for many industrial processes. In its wake, however, it has brought its own unique problems, and chief among these has been the problem of collecting and disposing of the residue which results from the combustion of the powdered or ground coal. This residue, known commonly as fly ash, is a nuisance if it is allowed to be dispersed into the atmosphere; and if collected it presents a difficult disposal problem. In present industrial practice it is almost always collected, …
