“Shihin Fr” Oil Lamps: Technology From Scratch, Yehoshua Dray, Ilana Gonen
'Atiqot
Recent excavations at Shiḥin, near ancient Ẓippori (Sepphoris) in Lower Galilee (Isarel), have revealed evidence of a Roman-period ceramic oil-lamp production workshop. The findings include a pottery kiln, lamp molds and industrial waste, prompting a reevaluation of oil-lamp production technologies and introducing new research questions. These questions were explored through experimental archaeology aimed at reconstructing manufacturing methods. This article focuses on the production technology of the Shiḥin FR oil lamps, distinguished by their unique designs and limited production period (70–135 CE). These chalk-mold-designed lamps were examined through high-resolution 3D scanning, reverse engineering and experimental archaeological practices, including mold carving, lamp …

Heart failure is a leading cause of death worldwide, and even with current treatments, the 5-y transplant-free survival rate is only ~50 to 70%. As such, there is a need to develop new treatments for patients that improve survival and quality of life. Recently, there have been efforts to develop small molecules for heart failure that directly target components of the sarcomere, including cardiac myosin. Danicamtiv is one of these molecules; however, its direct effects on myosin's single molecule mechanics and kinetics are not well understood. Using optical trapping techniques, stopped flow transient kinetics, and in vitro reconstitution assays, we …

Despite the global burden of helminth infections, no human vaccines have yet been licensed against these parasites. This study explored the development and evaluation of mRNA vaccine candidates targeting Schistosoma mansoni tetraspanin-2 (Sm-TSP-2), an antigen currently under evaluation as a protein vaccine. We designed constructs encoding either full-length Sm-TSP-2, or its large extracellular loop (EC2) domain in secretory, membrane-anchored, or cytosolic forms. In a murine challenge model, the secreted and membrane-anchored versions of Sm-TSP-2-EC2 induced the highest of antigen-specific antibody titers. These two construct designs, along with full-length Sm-TSP-2 mRNA, also significantly reduced adult worm …

Discrete-molecule hybrid perovskites with different organic and inorganic molecules can provide a wide array of tunable optoelectronic and piezoelectronic properties. In this study, we report the elastic modulus and hardness, obtained from instrumented indentation measurements, of three new and three known discrete-molecule single crystal halide metalates, with an aim towards understanding the relationship between their microstructure and mechanical properties. We find a correlation in the mechanical properties and the density of the crystal structure, as well as with the number of hydrogen bonding sites available on the organic cation. These two observations suggest that denser crystal structures with more hydrogen …

Systems and methods are provided herein for determining areas of low blood flow, low blood perfusion, suboptimal treatment perfusion, and/or likelihood of tumor recurrence. For example patient-specific methods are provided for identifying areas of low perfusion in an anatomy of interest (such as a vascular region). Angiography data corresponding to the anatomy of interest can be used to generate a modified three-dimensional (3D) model of the anatomy of interest, which represents a fluid flow system exhibiting variant flow patterns. The model can take into account patient-specific data to simulate physical characteristics of the fluid flow system. This provides for accurate …
