Material Point Method Simulation Of Soil Landslide Considering Interface Friction Effect, Zuo Zhipeng, Hu Shengliang, Li Maowen, Tong Chenxi, Li Haichao
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
During the high-speed and long-runout sliding failure process of large landslides, severe friction and heat generation in the sliding zone induce an interface friction effect between the debris flow and the bedrock, influencing the final accumulation morphology of the landslide. In this paper, a two-dimensional landslide model of the Yangbaodi landslide in Shenzhen was established using the material point method. A contact algorithm was introduced through a multi-background grid method to conduct numerical simulations on the initiation, sliding, and accumulation processes of the landslide. The results show that after initiation, the landslide moves over a long distance in a flow-like …

Stratified Multi-Well Pumping Tests And Back-Analysis Of Hydraulic Conductivity In Ultra-Deep Circular Foundation Pits, Luo Renkun, Wang Jie
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Dewatering prior to foundation pit excavation is a critical measure to prevent engineering hazards such as slope instability at the pit top, seepage around the pit, and bottom heave. As a key parameter in dewatering design, hydraulic conductivity directly influences the risk control in foundation pit engineering. Based on the east anchor foundation pit project of the Shiziyang Passageway, single-well pumping tests and stratified multi-well pumping tests were conducted. The water level variations in the internal dewatering wells and the external observation wells were monitored in stages. Accordingly, a finite difference numerical model for the pumping tests was established. The …

Characteristic Analysis Of Detection Profiles For Internal Moisture Content Of Asphalt Pavements Based On Ground Penetrating Radar, Yang Li, He Pingping, Liu Weizhen, Fu An
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
As a novel non-destructive testing method for roads, ground penetrating radar (GPR) can effectively prevent road water damage by regularly detecting the internal moisture condition of roads. However, when the moisture data of GPR are analyzed, the moisture conditions obtained by relying solely on the analysis of a single profile characteristic may be misjudged. To improve the accuracy and reliability of GPR in detecting the internal moisture content of pavements, focus was placed on the time-frequency domain analysis of GPR moisture content detection profiles in this paper. Simulation tests were conducted, and the influencing factors and results of moisture detection …

Study On Calculation Method For Incremental Launching Based On Nonlinear Analysis, Mo Shanfeng, Huang Cailiang, Qin Hui
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
In view of the shortcomings of traditional incremental launching calculation methods and the assembly construction control of incremental launching beams, an incremental launching calculation method based on nonlinear analysis was proposed in this paper. This method could truly simulate the running state where the incremental launching pier remains stationary, and the beam moves forward. The assembly alignment of all segments of the beam and the real alignment of the beam under specified working conditions could be directly output. The prefabricated alignment of the main beam (i.e., unstressed alignment) did not need to be consistent with the slide alignment. When the …

Hybrid Patrol–Staging Optimization For Freeway Service Patrols Under Cost Control: A Deterministic Milp With Dynamic Segment Adjustment & Environmental Co-Benefit, Mauricio Micolta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) programs are central to Traffic Incident Management (TIM), delivering rapid response, clearance, and motorist assistance on high-volume corridors. The prevailing continuous roaming patrol model provides broad coverage but generates substantial non-productive vehicle-miles traveled (VMT), increases responders’ exposure to risk, and treats Service Level Agreement (SLA) compliance as a statistical outcome rather than a fixed operational constraint. Existing literature lacks a framework that simultaneously optimizes corridor segmentation, jointly deploys patrol and staged units across space, time, and direction, and enforces response-time SLA as a binding constraint.
This dissertation introduces the Segmental-Spatio-Temporal Hybrid Service Model (SSTHSM), a two-tier …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Many products that directly impact the quality of human life today — gloves, catheters, condoms, and baby bottle teats — are made through the latex-dipping technology. While a variety of methods have been developed – e.g., particle counting, turbidimetry, microscopy, and light scattering – which are suitable for studying the coagulation of latex at very low concentrations, much less work has focused on methods suitable for in-situ characterization of latex coagulation in concentrated solutions (e.g., as relevant to the dipping process). This paper presents a process-relevant rheological protocol for assessing and optimizing latex coagulation dynamics for the thin glove coagulant …

Leveraging A Centralized Fleet Assignment Management For An Aviation Resilience, Inof Seno Acton Mr., Sutanto Soehodho, Nahry Yusuf
Smart City
Since deregulation in the aviation industry, competition among airlines has intensified. This competition is shown by the increasing number of routes, service times, aircraft, and airports served. This competition causes not all flight services to meet their targets, resulting in aircraft operating less efficiently. Passenger seats are not filled, and flight delays are becoming more frequent. Obviously, this will negatively impact consumers and the airline's finances. The study focused on assigning the fleet used to serve flights to maintain existing aviation services and improve aircraft operational efficiency. This study aims to maximize profits by optimizing fleet assignments through the Centralized …

Development Of A Coupled Hydrological-Nitrogen Modeling Framework For Urban Stormwater Pond Analysis, Tione Grant
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization impacts the hydrological and biogeochemical processes that regulate water quality in downstream ecosystems, leading to increased stormwater volume and nitrogen loads in receiving aquatic environments. Although stormwater ponds are designed as simple hydraulic storage basins, they function more like managed ecosystems within urban drainage systems, offering both hydraulic attenuation and passive nutrient treatment. However, nitrogen removal efficiency varies significantly and depends on interactions between hydrological and biogeochemical factors. This thesis details the development, calibration, validation, and sensitivity analysis of a coupled hydrological-nitrogen model framework for Aaran’s Pond, an urban stormwater pond in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Deep Q Network For Adaptive Pelican Crossing Signal Optimization Balancing Pedestrian Safety And Vehicular Efficiency, Amalia Yasmin Chairunnisa, Andyka Kusuma, Jachrizal R. Sumabrata
Smart City
Static pelican crossing systems often fail to accommodate the stochastic arrival patterns prevalent in high-density transit-oriented development (TOD) zones, creating operational inefficiencies between pedestrian clearance and vehicular flow. At the Cikini Station transit hub in Jakarta, existing fixed signal cycles contribute to pedestrian delays and peak-hour congestion. This study evaluates an adaptive signal control model for mid-block pelican crossings using a Deep Q-Network (DQN) algorithm. To calibrate the simulation, empirical data were extracted from field CCTV footage using the YOLOv8 algorithm, accurately capturing 15-minute peak flow fluctuations and commuter surges. The system is formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) …

Development Of An Adaptive Pelican Crossing Model Using Fuzzy Logic In Mixed Traffic Conditions, Manazil Adam, Andyka Kusuma, R. Jachrizal Sumabrata
Smart City
Traffic management at at-grade pedestrian crossing facilities (pelican crossings) in highly populated areas, such as the Universitas Indonesia Station, faces significant inefficiency challenges. During peak hours, the fixed-time system is frequently disabled and replaced with subjective manual control by security personnel, thereby triggering irregular stop-and-go cycles and a high accumulation of vehicle delays. This study aims to develop a hybrid adaptive control model integrating Computer Vision, Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Fuzzy Logic to optimize intersection performance under mixed traffic conditions. The research methodology begins with the extraction of traffic and pedestrian characteristic data, calculated manually through recorded field observations. This …

Modeling Of Tensile Stress-Strain Response For Steel Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacting Concretes, Anıl Niş, Nilufer Özyurt, Turan Özturan
Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
Main aim of the research was to further understand self-compacting concrete reinforced with steel fibers (SFR-SCC) behavior and to contribute modeling of the tensile stress-strain diagrams for the standardization of the fiber reinforced materials for structural utilization. Fiber reinforced materials has not been used without structural rebar because of the absence of stress-strain curve in tension required for the structural design codes. Hence, an inverse analysis (multi-layer model) was further modified for various steel fibers to predict tensile stress-strain behaviour. For this purpose, 5 different mixes; control, reinforced with long fibers with 0.5% and 1%, short fiber with 0.5% and …

Flexible-Mode Multi-Skilled Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Setup Times: Application In The Oil And Gas Industry, Safinaz M. El Dawody
Theses and Dissertations
Turnaround maintenance (TAM) in the petroleum refining sector requires coordinating geographically dispersed project portfolios under stringent resource, schedule, and budget constraints. Conventional scheduling models treat tasks in isolation, failing to account for shared resources, crew fatigue, or inter-site transit. To bridge this gap, this study introduces and empirically validates a Flexible-Mode Multi-Skilled Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem with Setup Times (FM-MS-RCPSP-ST). Applied to a real-world portfolio of 76 TAM projects across five governorates in Egypt, the framework is operationalized through an 11-stage pipeline integrating NSGA-II multi-objective optimization, GIS-based routing, and 500-trial Monte Carlo disruption simulations.
Results demonstrate that incorporating mandatory crew-rest …

An Integrated Sensor-Fusion Framework For Performance-Based Compensation In Construction, Aly Ayman El-Ashry
Theses and Dissertations
Construction productivity has historically stagnated due to a reliance on subjective labor monitoring and “lagging” performance indicators. This research proposes a novel compensation model with the use of Total Energy Management System (TEMS) to translate labor effort and efficiency into payment incentives with the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) wearables and Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts.
This research addresses the systemic problem of declining construction productivity caused by industry’s inability to objectively quantify human effort. While traditional models rely on post-facto production tallies, a significant research gap exists in real-time physiological labor monitoring. To bridge this, the proposed TEMS …
