Fundamentals Of Bridge Design, Albert C. Kalmbach May 1932

Fundamentals Of Bridge Design, Albert C. Kalmbach

Bachelors’ Theses

Man's earliest communication followed: water routes. Our prehistoric ancestors, evidence shows, fashioned boats and rafts which enabled them to travel along the rivers, and later to sail the seas. Following history through the years we will find man always developing theater routes for transportation before other methods. The early colonies in our America were along the coastal rivers; the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys were first settled in the interior.

Investigation Of Continuous Beams With Varying Moment Of Inertia By The Method Of Conjugate Points, Russell Arthur Bryant Jan 1932

Investigation Of Continuous Beams With Varying Moment Of Inertia By The Method Of Conjugate Points, Russell Arthur Bryant

Professional Degree Theses

"This design represents the application to a practical example of a rapid and direct graphic solution of the relation expressed by the Theorem of Three Moments. This method for obtaining moments in continuous beams eliminates the necessity of using arbitrary coefficients and gives the engineer an opportunity to exercise his ingeniuty [sic] and judgment toward obtaining efficiency and economy. The use of prescribed coefficients for continuous beams makes the design mechanical and unscientific and results in moments which may be 50% too small or 60% too large"--Introduction, leaf 1.

Preliminary Construction Of A Photo-Electric Cell Concentrator, Stanley S. Williams Jun 1931

Preliminary Construction Of A Photo-Electric Cell Concentrator, Stanley S. Williams

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The separation of the valuable portion from the waste portion of an ore is an individual problem for every ore. However, the various methods for accomplishing this end, more or less classify themselves by the physical properties of the constituents of the ore. Most of the properties of minerals have been utilized in some way or other to affect the separation of the valuable from the invaluable parts. Practically nothing has been done so far with color and luster to attain this purpose.

It is believed that the photo—electric cell could also be used in concentrating a certain class of …

A Preliminary Study Of The Separation Of The Copper Sulfides From Sphalerite And The Effect Of Certain Reagents On Some Of The Pure Copper Minerals In Synthetic Mixtures, Gailen T. Vandel Jan 1931

A Preliminary Study Of The Separation Of The Copper Sulfides From Sphalerite And The Effect Of Certain Reagents On Some Of The Pure Copper Minerals In Synthetic Mixtures, Gailen T. Vandel

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The problem of separating the copper sulfide minerals from sphalerite, in copper - zinc ores, has been a difficult one. This is largely due to the lack of adequate research and the small amount of data obtainable on the behavior of copper and zinc sulfide minerals in flotation circuits.

Wind And Earthquake Stresses In Tall Buildings, Henry A. Reynolds Jan 1931

Wind And Earthquake Stresses In Tall Buildings, Henry A. Reynolds

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing cost of land in the modern city it has been necessary to expand upward rather than on the surface. The result has been to concentrate commercial and industrial enterprises in small areas whose influence is felt over the entire world. Notable examples are New York and Chicago. In these developments the engineer has played no small part. It is claimed by some that the maximum economic height has been reached at a thousand feet. However, both the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings have slightly passed this mark. It is not improbable that even taller buildings then these …

Data For Standard Curve Chord Steel Roof Trusses., William Hewitt Bush Jan 1930

Data For Standard Curve Chord Steel Roof Trusses., William Hewitt Bush

Professional Degree Theses

"In the past the Engineering Department of the structural steel company, by which the writer is employed, has been troubled with having to make a large number of preliminary steel truss designs for the purpose of estimating weights for competitive bids on structural steel building contracts. In order to eliminate this expenditure of time, a study was made of the possibility of making a standard design for curved chord steel roof trusses that would give the desired information by observation"--Truss Design, page 5.

A Study On Concrete Roads, Joaquin H. Hernandez Barreneches Apr 1929

A Study On Concrete Roads, Joaquin H. Hernandez Barreneches

Bachelors’ Theses

There is hardly an institution in existence that is as old and as useful as the road. In fact, it is so old and we are so used to its usefulness that we seldom think of its origin or its history. We take them more or leas for granted.

The Movement Of Ground Water And Its Relation To The Drainage Of Irrigated Lands, Ernest O. Larson Jun 1923

The Movement Of Ground Water And Its Relation To The Drainage Of Irrigated Lands, Ernest O. Larson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One needs but to review the history of the irrigated projects of the West to see clearly the importance of drainage. Since the passing of the Reclamation Act in 1902, the construction of drainage work by the United States Reclamation Service on seventeen projects located in thirteen western states represents about 12 percent of the expenditures from the Reclamation Fund. The portion for drainage has been spent during the last few years. This work has required an annual expenditure of about $1,000,000 or a total of $8,000,000 to July, 1922(1). The work completed is estimated to have reclaimed …

Applications Of Method Of Least Squares To The Adjustment Of Level Circuits: Adjustment Of Elevations In Dawson And St. James Townships, Phelps County, Missouri, Clarence Edward Bardsley Jan 1922

Applications Of Method Of Least Squares To The Adjustment Of Level Circuits: Adjustment Of Elevations In Dawson And St. James Townships, Phelps County, Missouri, Clarence Edward Bardsley

Professional Degree Theses

"An introduction to a thesis on least squares could be drawn out to considerable length in explanation: as the purpose of this thesis has been an investigation in applications of the method of least squares to the adjustment of level circuits, it will be found in the body of the report considerable space has been devoted to the explanation of the different applications of the method, with a view that these investigations may be of use to engineers in the profession; so the introductory remarks will be brief ... The method of least squares takes first rank as an arithmetical …

Land Drainage In Central Iowa, Ernst Lorenze Chamberlain Jan 1916

Land Drainage In Central Iowa, Ernst Lorenze Chamberlain

Professional Degree Theses

"The problems encountered in land drainage are comparatively simple when seen from an engineering point of view. Most problems do not require a fine scientific or mathematical analysis but are rather questions to be decided by good judgment or practical common sense. The most difficult problems encountered are financial, legal and political, therefore, in this paper considerable attention is paid to the Iowa drainage law, facts learned from practical drainage men and to the organization and operation of the different financing systems for drainage"--page 1.

Graphical Representation Of Compressed Air Formulae, John Thomas Vitt, Paul Andrew Philippi Jan 1907

Graphical Representation Of Compressed Air Formulae, John Thomas Vitt, Paul Andrew Philippi

Bachelors Theses

"Air during compression and expansion obeys the same laws as do other gases and these laws have been mathematically stated by purely rational formulae. Most of these formulae are logarithmic and their use involves a considerable amount of work. The object of this thesis is to present these formulae in such form that problems involving their use may be readily and easily solved. It was decided to present them graphically and the accompanying curves are the results of our labors"--page 1.

Derivation Of Some Empirical Formulae, Showing Relation Between Breaking Strength And Various Functions Which Enter Into Cement Testing, Arthur D. Terrell Jan 1898

Derivation Of Some Empirical Formulae, Showing Relation Between Breaking Strength And Various Functions Which Enter Into Cement Testing, Arthur D. Terrell

Bachelors Theses

"Although we find a great many results of experimental work in cement testing, and some curves plotted, there seems to have been very little attempt made toward fitting equations to these curves. This then leaves an opening for original investigation. During my experiments quite a variety of interesting points have been made manifest. Most of them are of no practical benefit, but merely of interest in themselves. My work has been on a few of the most important ones, which will be given subsequently"--page 1.

Imaginary Functions, Floyd Davis Dec 1881

Imaginary Functions, Floyd Davis

Bachelors Theses

"The imaginary expression which occurs in common Algebra, and in all the higher departments of mathematical science, has been one of the most perplexing problems which the human mind has encountered in any age. It was studied by the early mathematicians and became a field of speculation, but developed no marked results, for it was generally considered algebraically and in the interpretation is a symbol of an impossible operation. But many of the problems arising from algebraic-geometrical analysis involving imaginaries was of such importance to mathematical and physical science that great attempts were made to establish their solution. It was …

Iron Bridges, Lindsay Coppedge Dec 1877

Iron Bridges, Lindsay Coppedge

Bachelors Theses

"The superiority of iron over wood as the material for bridges is now generally understood that we see no need of any discussion"--page 3.

Maramec Bridge, Thomas H. Millsaps Dec 1876

Maramec Bridge, Thomas H. Millsaps

Professional Degree Theses

"Bridge-building, as a science, is comparatively of recent date, for relating to now, of what may be called ancient bridges, do we read of them having been mathematical calculations, determining the strains upon the constituent parts of the bridge structure. This very necessary operation seems to have been entirely omitted. This was, probably, because to that time, there had been no thoroughly scientific investigation, of the new and beautiful subject of scientific bridge-building. At the present time, we determine with a minuteness the strain thrown upon any part of a bridge. We are thus enabled to give the proper dimensions …
