Effect Of Varying Supports On Nickel As A Catalyst In The Hydrogenation Of Unrefined And Refined Soy Bean Oil, Nate W. Fredman Aug 1934

Effect Of Varying Supports On Nickel As A Catalyst In The Hydrogenation Of Unrefined And Refined Soy Bean Oil, Nate W. Fredman

Bachelors’ Theses

Hydrogenation is a subject that has grown in importance only within the last thirty years. Before 1900, little was known about the process of adding hydrogen to a liquid oil to form a solid fat, the latter of which has a great deal more uses than the former. Much trouble was experienced, since conditions controlling the process must be very definite in order to obtain good results.

Chemists have found that the main requisite in the above process is the catalyst. It must be very carefully prepared and controlled. But instead of using only the catalyst, many modern research workers …

The Effect Of Halowax 1012, 1013 & 1014 On The Melting Points Of Various Waxes, Louis Henry Kroening May 1934

The Effect Of Halowax 1012, 1013 & 1014 On The Melting Points Of Various Waxes, Louis Henry Kroening

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is concerned with the melting points of various waxes and the effect of Halowax 1012, 1013 and 1014 upon their physical constants. Interest in this problem was aroused "by the fact that Halowax as shown by Nathan Smith in his thesis, "The Effect of Halowax Upon Lubricating Oils and Greases”, decreases the viscosity of oils. Since lubricating oils contain waxes it is logical to expect that this decrease in viscosity is due to the lowering of the melting point of the waxes present. It was to investigate the truth of this assumption that this work was begun.

A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Ternary Mixtures Of Waxes, Leonard Anthony Veranth May 1934

A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Ternary Mixtures Of Waxes, Leonard Anthony Veranth

A Method Of Determining The Relative Thermal Conductivities Of Liquids, Lohr Arthur Burkardt May 1934

A Method Of Determining The Relative Thermal Conductivities Of Liquids, Lohr Arthur Burkardt

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis concerns the development of apparatus suitable for the practical determination of the thermal conductivity of liquids. The data presented in the literature refers to the determination of absolute conductivity values and-is very unsatisfactory from a practical point of view. The aim here has not been to furnish absolute data, but to provide a simple means of determining the relative conductivity of any series of liquids. Knowing such a set of relative conductivities, absolute values can readily be calculated therefrom.

The aim has been to develop an apparatus that is simple enough to be constructed in the ordinary laboratory, …

A Contribution To The Preparation Of Synthetic Rubber From Butadiene. Ii., Joseph Patrick Iding May 1934

A Contribution To The Preparation Of Synthetic Rubber From Butadiene. Ii., Joseph Patrick Iding

Bachelors’ Theses

Since the World War, the production of synthetic rubber has become the problem not only of the laboratory, but of commerce as well. Several factors demanded this research.

In the first place, the World War made the dependence of countries on each other strikingly evident in several ways, one of which was the need for rubber by great nations whose situations prohibited the planting of the rubber tree and consequently put them under obligation to other countries for their supply.

And now in the last few years this demand for rubber has been increased enormously, through the increased production of …

The Action Of Tertiary Butyl Hypochlorite On Certain Nitrogen Compounds, Myrl Lichtenwalter Aug 1933

The Action Of Tertiary Butyl Hypochlorite On Certain Nitrogen Compounds, Myrl Lichtenwalter

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

In an earlier unpublished study, made in this laboratory, of the preparation and properties of positive halogen compounds, it was found that the replacement of hydrogen on an imide nitrogen in certain compounds sensitive to hydrolytic agents could be accomplished in tertiary butyl alcohol solution. It seemed likely that this reaction took place through the intermediate formation of tertiary butyl hypochlorite. Such mechanism has been proposed by Sandmeyer to account for the formation of chlorylimino ethyl carbonate by the action of chlorine on an alcoholic solution of potassium cyanide. The isolation of tertiary butyl hypochlorite by Chattaway and Brackenburg makes …

A Study Of The Cooling Curve Of Several Waxes And Various Binary Mixtures Of These Waxes, Casimir A. Smyk May 1933

A Study Of The Cooling Curve Of Several Waxes And Various Binary Mixtures Of These Waxes, Casimir A. Smyk

Bachelors’ Theses

A cooling curve may be defined as a graphic representation of the relationship which exists in the elapse of time and temperature of a substance surrounded by a medium of a temperature lower than itself. There is no heat added to the substance and the only heat taken away from the substance is by means of the surrounding medium. It is time plotted against temperature. Time on the x-axis and temperature on the y-axis. Many methods have been mentioned for the determination of purity and identification of a wax. But the methods are not standardized because of the length and …

The Effect Of Halowax On Lubricating Oil And Grease: The Instability Of Aluminum Grease In Regard To Viscosity, Nathan Smith May 1933

The Effect Of Halowax On Lubricating Oil And Grease: The Instability Of Aluminum Grease In Regard To Viscosity, Nathan Smith

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is concerned with lubricating oils and solid lubricants. The initial problem in this research was the effect of Halowax 1012, 1013, and 1014 on lubricating oil. During the investigation, however, it was observed that the addition of Halowax to the lubricating oils formed a false gel at ordinary temperature, the consistency depending on the percentage of Halowax added. The result no longer favored continued research since the lubricating oil was made impractical. The problem then lent itself to the influence of Halowax on solid lubricants, in particular lubricating greases. It was on this phase of the investigation that …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the volumetric course as offered by the Department of Chemistry of South Dakota State College for the spring term of 1931, we experienced difficulties in the methods which we were using for the determination of iron. The general method used was that of Penny's, using an outside indicator of potassium ferricyanide, and titrating with potassium dichromate.

Wax Analysis With Special Reference To Montan, Spermaceti, And Chinese Insect Wax, Margaret M. Plonsker, Margaret E. Seippel Jan 1933

Wax Analysis With Special Reference To Montan, Spermaceti, And Chinese Insect Wax, Margaret M. Plonsker, Margaret E. Seippel

Bachelors’ Theses

The presentation of this thesis under joint authorship finds its justification in the fact that much of the experimental work, though performed individually, is of such a nature as to warrant a unified description. In this way the reader is afforded a better representation and clearer conception of the problem, and a substantial guide for further investigation. Though much work has been done in the field of wax analysis, little is known of the higher fatty acids and alcohols of many of the waxes. Their isolation has been infrequent, and few if any of their derivatives have been formed. It …

A Study Of Methods For Separating The Elements That Interfere In The Electrolytic Deposition Of Lead As Lead Oxide, John Shaw Sabine Jan 1933

A Study Of Methods For Separating The Elements That Interfere In The Electrolytic Deposition Of Lead As Lead Oxide, John Shaw Sabine

Masters Theses

"The electrolytic determination of lead as lead dioxide is a very desirable method, due to its simplicity, accuracy, and the small amount of the analyst's time required. The electrolytic method functions when both large and small amounts of lead are present. The method depends upon the fact that from a nitric acid solution the lead is plated upon the anode as lead dioxide; from the lead dioxide deposit the percentage of lead may be calculated.

An electrolytic method, for determining the lead in samples containing from 5 to 150 mg. of lead, was described in a paper by Schrenk and …

The Preparation And Specific Gravity Of Pure Formic Acid And Its Aqueous Solutions, Leo Henry Merchie Jan 1933

The Preparation And Specific Gravity Of Pure Formic Acid And Its Aqueous Solutions, Leo Henry Merchie

Masters Theses

"Formic acid, the lowest member of the fatty acid series, was obtained as early as the seventeenth century by distilling ants with water. Other methods were later found after the correct constitution of the acid became known. This acid is not difficult to prepare in a water solution, but it is difficult to obtain in the anhydrous state...The purpose of this work is to study the various methods of preparing anhydrous formic acid, to improve a method for preparing the anhydrous acid, and to correct specific gravity tables for aqueous solutions of formic acid"--Introduction, page 1-2.

Bachelors’ Theses

Organic chemistry offers a large field for quantitative investigation. The nature of many organic compounds makes for difficult analysis. The separation of simple mixtures is oftentimes a problem. The work undertaken in this thesis is of special interest because it combines several phases of chemistry, in the investigation of a problem, which by its very existence, suggests the need for solution.

The Electrodeposition Of Chromium And Iron Alloy, Duane J. Windau May 1932

The Electrodeposition Of Chromium And Iron Alloy, Duane J. Windau

Bachelors’ Theses

The plating of stainless steel, or more correctly, the plating of iron chromium alloys is among the recent projects undertaken by the steel industry to improve its products. Publications on this industrial endeavor are few, although undoubtedly there is considerable work going on. The reason for the sudden interest in stainless steel may be traced to the interesting and valuable properties of chromium steels and especially the stainless steels. However, articles made entirely of stainless steel are expensive and therefore cheaper substitutes have been considered, names the plating of a base metal with chrom-iron alloys. This project will be of …
