A Study Of The Inhibiting Value Of Various Separators On The Plating Of Lead, Lawrence E. Ehrnst May 1932

A Study Of The Inhibiting Value Of Various Separators On The Plating Of Lead, Lawrence E. Ehrnst

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis was suggested by the work of Mr. B. J. Pozorski and Mr. W. Adashek. Mr. Pozorski investigated the inhibiting qualities of various separators when placed between two platinum electrodes in a copper sulfate solution. Mr. Adashek worked on the efficiency of various lead plating solutions using lead electrodes and electrlyes containing soluble lead salts. Combining the work of these men, the author is investigating the prohibitive plating properties of various separator using a lead plating solution. By so doing, the investigation has a closer relationship to the actual performance of the storage battery .

Determination Of The Adsorptive Power Of Charcoal For Caffein In Coffee Infusions, James G. Lappa May 1932

Determination Of The Adsorptive Power Of Charcoal For Caffein In Coffee Infusions, James G. Lappa

Bachelors’ Theses

In recent years, the American public has been confronted with considerable advertising on the part of the large coffee merchants with regard to the reputed harmful effects of the caffein contained in coffee. The attitude taken against this constituent of coffee, was of course, determined by the form of coffee sold by the respective merchants, those handling the ordinary form stressing the importance of correct brewing in preventing any nervous disorders or loss of sleep, and those selling the decaffeinized brand blaming the caffein as the cause. There is considerable disagreement between authorities on this question, since most knowledge of the …

Current Efficiency Of Various Chromium Plating Baths, Clarence R. Hanus May 1932

Current Efficiency Of Various Chromium Plating Baths, Clarence R. Hanus

Bachelors’ Theses

Chromium is one of the hardest metals and when properly plated gives a beautiful lustre. It has a fine resistance to oxidizing agents and does not tarnish up to 600°C. Oxygen has little effect on chromium plate, making the latter invaluable for embellishments and decorative purposes.

However, there are difficulties to be overcome in chromium plating, such as,

  1. Poor throwing power.
  2. Formation of trivalent chromium.
  3. Evolution of hydrogen at the cathode.

It has been found that current efficiency is low, resulting in low throwing power, uneven plating and waste of electric energy.

In this thesis it will be attempted to …

The Effect Of Fruit Acids On Aluminum, Glenore M. Dugan May 1932

The Effect Of Fruit Acids On Aluminum, Glenore M. Dugan

Bachelors’ Theses

Aluminum has been used in cooking utensils for about thirty years and is still the favorite material employed. There is no disagreeable taste, odor or discoloration discernible from its use.

There have been many experiments to prove that aluminum does not depreciate the quality of the food cooked in it. It does, however, add itself to the acidic and basic foods cooked therein. The amount taken up by neutral foods is negligible.

For experimental purposes, fruit juices were chosen as the attacking substances and the strips of aluminum were of the quality used in ordinary cooking utensils, not cast aluminum.

A New Method For Determining The Rate Of Evaporation And The Relative Humidity, Willliam T. Shaw Apr 1932

A New Method For Determining The Rate Of Evaporation And The Relative Humidity, Willliam T. Shaw

Bachelors’ Theses

The presence of water vapor in the air is of the greatest importance to organic life. Animal and vegetable life is entirely dependent on water which very largely reaches the the earth through precipitation of water vapor held in the atmosphere. Not only does the water vapor in the air supply organic life with the life-giving fluid, but it also significantly modifies the climatic conditions of any region. Even in temperate climates such as in southern Australia, the air is often so dry that ordinary wooden furniture and articles of wood cannot be used because the air in this condition …

The Extraction Of Waxes And Wax Mixtures By Means Of Common Organic Solvents, Bernard J. Finley

Bachelors’ Theses

This work was performed with the intention of giving some information of the solubility of the more common waxes, by means of extraction with several commercial solvents. Besides the individual waxes, various mixtures of waxes were also used to determine the effect of the mixtures on the extractability.

Determinations are also made to find the extractable matter in a commercial furniture polish and shellac. The acid, saponification and iodine values of the polish and shellac are also found.

Very little work seems to have been done on the accurate determination of percentage of extractable matter in waxes and mixtures of …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Chapter I: Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent the reaction between stannous and arsenate ions in silicic acid gels is influenced by temperature.

This was to be done by observing (1) the rate of crystal growth; and (2) the appearance of the crystal growth in sets of gels identical in composition but kept at different temperatures throughout the process of crystal growth.

The Influence Of A Halowax Oil On The Viscosity Of Lubricating Oil At Various Temperature, Clarence J. Riordan Aug 1931

The Influence Of A Halowax Oil On The Viscosity Of Lubricating Oil At Various Temperature, Clarence J. Riordan

Bachelors’ Theses

Halowax Oil is used as a.filler in plastic compounds, on wood as an insecticide against termites, and the Petroleum industry finds it a very good valve lubricant in internal combustion engines and a solvent for tarry residues which deposit on combustion chambers. Due to its low viscosity and very low congealing point it would therefore seem logical to investigate this further with the idea of using Halogenated oils as winter lubricants for automobile engines. The work naturally suggested further study, such as its effect on corrosion of steel, aluminum, iron and copper, the flash and fire points, viscosity at various …

The Effect Of Alternating Current On The Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, William Howard Schumaker Jun 1931

The Effect Of Alternating Current On The Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, William Howard Schumaker

Bachelors’ Theses

However much may be said regarding the advantages of direct current, there is little doubt at present, that from the viewpoint of power generation and transmission, alternating current has considerable advantages over direct current. While such is the case, there is, and probably always will be, a need for direct current. According to our present development, this direct current is indispensable in wireless work, radio, and in the laboratory test shops, where it is necessary to work with very sensitive meters, which are inexpensive and easy enough to secure for direct current measurements, but which necessitates an elaborate and costly …

For a great many years, the science of chromium plating has been investigated by eminent research workers in the domain of chemistry. The problem of deposition was solved some years ago by Carveth and Curry of Cornell University. At the present time there has accumulated such a vast mass of data upon the subject that it does not lie in the power of a single individual to obtain a truly thorough and comprehensive study of the entire problem in all of its aspects.

Substitution Of Hydrofluoric Acid For Sulphuric Acid In Chromium Plating, Leonard Schulze May 1931

Substitution Of Hydrofluoric Acid For Sulphuric Acid In Chromium Plating, Leonard Schulze

Bachelors’ Theses

Chromium plating or the electrodeposition of chromium from chromic acid baths has been an accomplished fact for almost a century. However, it has not been until the last few years that considerable attributive information has been published to make the mechanism of the process sufficiently understood to permit its commercial operation.1 Most of the scientific information published on chromium plating thus far is general there being very little specific information revealed as yet. Material, as shall be referred to occasionally, may be read about its early successful applications stressing the unusual properties, advantages, interests, and activities but very little …

The Solubility Of Certain Salts In Ethyl Iodide And The Miscibility Of Organic Liquids In Ethylene Bromide And Ethyl Bromide, Theodore F.X. Tribovii May 1931

The Solubility Of Certain Salts In Ethyl Iodide And The Miscibility Of Organic Liquids In Ethylene Bromide And Ethyl Bromide, Theodore F.X. Tribovii

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem is solely one of scientific interest. Ethyl iodide is commonly Known as an organic compound which is a very poor solvent, For this reason salts were chosen, which resembled atomically ethyl iodide. That is salts containing iodine. It would be commonly suspected that salts of this nature would, if any, be soluble in ethyl iodide.

A Volumetric Method Of Chromium Determination With Mercurous Nitrate, Gerald W. Lawton May 1931

A Volumetric Method Of Chromium Determination With Mercurous Nitrate, Gerald W. Lawton

Bachelors’ Theses

Boncyk in his research on potentiometric titrations, made the observation that apparently mercurous nitrate could be used to titrate chromic acid solution. He used potassium iodide as an outside indicator and found that a slight excess of mercurous nitrate gave a gray precipitate with potassium iodide solution. The precipitate seemed to indicate the end point, or the neutralization of the chromic acid; a slight excess of the mercurous nitrate causing the immediate formation of a gray precipitate. Not knowing the exact normality and purity of the solutions used, he could not ascertain whether the gray was the true end point, …

A Study Of The Plating Prohibitive Properties Of Various Separators, Bruno J. Pozorski May 1931

A Study Of The Plating Prohibitive Properties Of Various Separators, Bruno J. Pozorski

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of this thesis is to study the plating prohibitive properties of the various materials commonly used in the manufacturing of separators, and to indicate which material would be most serviceable and feasible in a separator. At one time positives and negatives were kept not more than 0.25 inches apart, with the idea of reducing the intervening layers of electrolyte, and, therefore, the internal resistance of the cell, as much as possible. It was, however, found that the output could actually be increased by putting the plates at greater distances, the fact being that the larger bulk of solution …

Studies Of Respiration And Carbohydrate Changes In The Potato At 3 Degrees C And 20 Degrees C, Hermann I. Karl May 1931

Studies Of Respiration And Carbohydrate Changes In The Potato At 3 Degrees C And 20 Degrees C, Hermann I. Karl

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effect which different factors would have on the respiration and the sugar content of potatoes. It is known that the sugar content of a potato may be increased with the lowering of the temperature. It is also known that with this lowering of temperature the respiration is also lowered. What other factors will effect the respiration and the sugar content of the potato and to what extent is the question to be answered.

Although this problem may seem of little importance because sugar .1e not wanted in a potato, yet the …

Hardness And Porosity In Chromium Plating, Waldemar Wick May 1931

Hardness And Porosity In Chromium Plating, Waldemar Wick

Bachelors’ Theses

In recent years chromium plating has been subjected to much research due to its ever-increasing demand. The results of these investigations have demonstrated the valuable properties of this plate. Of its many advantageous properties, hardness is one of the outstanding ones, but its application in industry is as yet not fully realized. This being due to the fact that it is difficult to produce a plate that is uniform and does not chip. Many chemists have investigated the porosity of the chromium plate in order to produce a coating that could be used for protective purposes, but there seems to …

Reactions Between The Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Willard Merle Farr Jan 1931

Reactions Between The Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Willard Merle Farr

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Observation of crystal growths resulting from the chemical interaction of stannous chloride and sodium arsenate in silicic acid gels revealed the following very interesting fact. Gels identical in every respect except acidity, contained crystal growths varying greatly in appearance.

The purpose of this investigation was, therefore, to allow stannous and arsenate ion to combine in a series of accurately prepared gels, identical in all respects except the acid content, and to observe the effect upon crystal growth of: (1) varying the acid concentration; and (2) varying the kind of acid
