Pyrochemical Changes In Missouri Halloysite, Frank Joseph Zvanut
Pyrochemical Changes In Missouri Halloysite, Frank Joseph Zvanut
Doctoral Dissertations
"For centuries it has been known that the application of heat to a clay or a clay body produces changes that make it an entirely different substance from the original raw clay. Ever since the earliest civilizations produced crude building brick by baking formed clay bodies in the sun's rays, mankind has been speculating on the nature of the changes that convert soft, friable, plastic clays into hard, strong, non-plastic, rock-like masses. It has been only within the last two decades, however, that progress has been made in the solution of problems dealing with the resultant products in fired clay …

A Comparison Of Ths Digestive Powers Of Trypsin And Papain On Casein And The Effect Of Certain Mild Antiseptics On These Powers, Joseph E. Steker
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect of certain mild antiseptics, such as Benzoic acid, Boric acid, salicylic acid, Phenol, Cresol, Thymol, on the digestive action of the enzymes Trypsin and Caroid (papain). A thorough perusal of the literature reveals only a small amount of data dealing with the influence of common antiseptics on enzyme action. Because of the important uses of enzymes in industry and the need of antiseptics for protective action, this problem is of great importance. The author wishes to acknowledge the kind cooperation of Dr. John R. Koch, Head of the Department of …
A Study Of The Decomposition Potentials Of A Commercial Gluconic Acid Bath, Roman L. Pozorski
A Study Of The Decomposition Potentials Of A Commercial Gluconic Acid Bath, Roman L. Pozorski
Bachelors’ Theses
The study of electrochemistry is not only fascinating and worthwhile, but essential to the student of chemistry in the understanding of many theories and chemical phenomena. Though electrochemistry is still in its infancy, numerous substances are prepared electrolytically in industry. It is reported that about 15% of all the chemical goods manufactured are prepared by electrochemical industries. Of the various types of studies, in electrochemistry, the one which appears to be most appealing is the analysis of chemical reaction sin which electrochemical methods are used. The determination of decomposition potentials is one of these methods. A knowledge of decomposition values …

The Vitamin D And Provitamin D Content Of Some Varieties Of Utah Wheat, Harold M. Nielsen
The Vitamin D And Provitamin D Content Of Some Varieties Of Utah Wheat, Harold M. Nielsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Cereal grains were known to be notably deficient in the anti-rachitic principle even before the discovery of vitamin D. Clinicians had associated a type of rickets of infancy, characterized by an over-weight, flabby, bowlegged condition, with a diet consisting mainly of cereals. Mellanby (1) in 1921 concluded that this type of rickets is induced by overfeeding with carbohydrates. He also showed in the same report, however, that oatmeal, although it contains less carbohydrates than the other grains tested, possesses a special tendency toward rachitogenesis.

An Investigation Into The Bromate Method Of Manganese Determination, Ray A. Bunday
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the history of research in the science of Chemistry the problem of the quantitative determination of manganese has always been a perplexing one. The results have usually fallen short of the theoretical value and has necessitated the application of an empirical factor(1) which is always undesirable to the true research scientist, if not to the commercial analyst.

A Study Of Methods Of Determining The Rate Of Acid Hydrolysis Of Wheat Gluten, Angus V. Honrickson
A Study Of Methods Of Determining The Rate Of Acid Hydrolysis Of Wheat Gluten, Angus V. Honrickson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Because of the nutritious value of sodium glutamate and its meat-like flavor, which is very pleasing to most people, and hence its demand if it were properly promoted, and because of the abundance of protein in accessible form for its manufacture, it is only reasonable to assume that if the optimum conditions of protein hydrolysis were found, the manufacturing could be made a highly successful enterprise. it was the purpose of this research to investigate the methods by which the hydrolysis of wheat glutes can do conveniently followed in order to determine the efficiency of reactions run under specific conditions.

A Study Of The Products Of The Reaction Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Frank K. Thompson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The fact that characteristic crystalline products result upon the diffusion of arsenate ions into silicic acid gel which has been impregnated with stannous ions has been known by the Pacific Chemistry Department for some time. The optimum conditions with regards to heat and hydrogen ion concentration have been determined. The purpose of this investigation was to study the products of the reaction. First to determine whether or not the silicic acid itself combined with the stannous and arsenate. ions in the formation of the crystalline product, and second to determine its chemical composition.

The Lime Content Of Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Ellis County, Kansas, G. Lawrence Rarick
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The report which is being submitted here is the result of several weeks of field and laboratory work investigating the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous System of Ellis County, Kansas. The writer has attempted to consider the subject primarily from a chemical viewpoint although much of the background for the work has been of a geological nature. There has been no attempt to give a complete chemical analysis of the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous System, but rather a more or less thorough analysis in regard to the percentage of lime that the rocks of the various formations and members …
The Effect Of Sodium Fluoride On The Bright Plating Range Of Chromium, Ernst Curschmann
The Effect Of Sodium Fluoride On The Bright Plating Range Of Chromium, Ernst Curschmann
Bachelors’ Theses
Chromium is used very extensively at the present time as an exterior plate over other metals. It has found favor not only because of its brilliant blue, untarnishable lustre, but also because of its extreme hardness. The great increase in the demand for chromium plate in recent years, rapidly relegating nickel plate into the background, has resulted in increased research and experimentation .in the field of chromium plating, in the endeavor to provide a lasting, beautiful plate at a minimum of expense.
Present chromium plating baths containing sulphuric acid as the active agent of deposition leave much to be desired …
Conductivity Applications, Henry W. Koch
Conductivity Applications, Henry W. Koch
Bachelors’ Theses
Since the introduction of Arrhenius’ theory of electrolytic dissociation more than forty years ago, many applications of the chemistry of electrolytes have been formulated. Of the many uses of conductance measurements, conductivity titrations have lately assumed the theoretical and technical importance which they rightfully should have. Conductance measurements enjoy prominence both in practice and in research, and the almost unlimited field provides a wealth of material for the ardent electrochemist. There is no doubt that many of the old analytic methods will soon be largely supplanted by this newer procedure which even at the present finds such varied usefulness.
The Preparation Of Calcium And Barium Gluconate, Ronald Anthony Plzak
The Preparation Of Calcium And Barium Gluconate, Ronald Anthony Plzak
Bachelors’ Theses
The privilege of working on this subject is one which the author has sincerely appreciated, as it has given him the opportunity of incorporating many of the more recent contributions along the line of oxidizing aldose sugars. In reviewing these contributions, he has abstained from conveying an impression of finality and has attempted to show the many possibilities which the free sugar acids offer for the future. The experience of the last few years has proved that even long-cherished conceptions and apparently well-established facts may at any time undergo drastic revision. For this reason, the author has referred directly to …

A Comparison Of The Caffeine Content Of Various Coffees, Emil J. Petrusek
Bachelors’ Theses
Coffee must be rated as one of the most important commodities in the commercial world due to the statistics or output and consumption. There are various brands and kinds of coffee produced by the different growers and roasters. Now to sell the brands, the various concerns base their advertising upon the flavor and price of the coffee. It is a fact that the flavor of coffee is in some way affected by the caffeine present. One popular brand is advertised as decaffeinated, that is, the caffeine has been removed. Confronted with these facts, it occurred to the author to test …

In the summer of 1932, the Milwaukee Public Museum, sent an expedition to the Bad Lands and Black Hills of South Dakota, under the direction of Dr. Ira Edwards, Curator of Geology in that institution. It was at this time that the author, a member of this group, while studying the pegmatites of the Black Hills, became interested in the tantalum-columbium bearing minerals of that region, namely tantalite and columbite. At that time the writer made a detailed mineralogical study of these two minerals, as well as a thorough investigation of their occurrence in that region. In the fall of …
Sensitivity Of Curcumin As An Organic Reagent In Testing For Beryllium, James W. Bookhamer
Sensitivity Of Curcumin As An Organic Reagent In Testing For Beryllium, James W. Bookhamer
Bachelors’ Theses
For many years the analytical chemist avoided by design or more probably by accident the general use of organic chemicals in his work. Some few of them he accepted as a matter of course, and perhaps without much thought of their organic nature. In qualitative analysis he used chloroform as a solvent in testing for bromine and iodine. A few indicators were in common use, but organic chemicals were used but little in analytical work. It was not until the twentieth century that their use in analytical procedures received any worthwhile attention. Since then they have rapidly come to the …
