The Determination Of The Solubility Of Hafnium Oxide In Aqueous Solution By The Radioactive Tracer Technique, Hampden O. Banks Jan 1950

The Determination Of The Solubility Of Hafnium Oxide In Aqueous Solution By The Radioactive Tracer Technique, Hampden O. Banks

Masters Theses

"To date, there is no information in the open literature concerning the solubility of hafnium oxide in water other than the fact that it is very insoluble. This lack of experimental information is due, partly, to the fact that hafnium is a relatively new addition to the list of known elements"--Introduction, page 1.

Some Reactions Of Tris (Hydroxymethyl) Aminomethane, Ralph Walton Raiford

Master's Theses

Most of the work on alkanolamines has been confined to the preparations and reactions of the ethanolamines. The results reported herein deal with the reactions of H2NC(CH2OH)3, tris(hydroxymethly)aminomethane, which is a beta-hydroxy amine.

An Electrochemical Determination Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Silver And Mercury Sulfides, Arthur G. Cole Sep 1949

An Electrochemical Determination Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Silver And Mercury Sulfides, Arthur G. Cole

Theses and Dissertations

The problem consists of measuring accurately the free energy of formation, heat of formation, entropy, and solubility product constant of silver and mercury sulfides, and is a part of a larger study extending to many other metal sulfides. The confusion now existing in the chemical literature amply justifies a study of this nature. The thermodynamic properties of several important metal sulfides have never been measured, and the only values available for them are estimates. Determinations of the properties of many other metal sulfides have been carried out, but the results given by different authors often differ widely.

Factors Influencing The Solubility And Oxidation Of Commercial Iron Pyrites, Neldon Lamont Jensen Aug 1949

Factors Influencing The Solubility And Oxidation Of Commercial Iron Pyrites, Neldon Lamont Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Studies were made (1) to determine the effect of air and oxygen and verying concentrations in distilled water, on the solubility of iron pyrites; (2) to determine the effect of acid, base and buffer solutions of varying pH; (3) to observe the effect of some oxidizing and reducing agents on the solubility of iron pyrites. These investigations would aid in deciding the possibilities of using iron pyrites as a soil conditioner.

A Determination Of The Decomposition Potential Of Sulfamic Acid And Certain Of Its Metallic Salts, Francis J. Shell Jul 1949

A Determination Of The Decomposition Potential Of Sulfamic Acid And Certain Of Its Metallic Salts, Francis J. Shell

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The present investigation of decomposition potentials, or the potential where continuous electrolysis begins, was suggested by a paper by Choguill (5) on the electrodeposition of some metals from solutions of their sulfamates. Sulfamic acid or amidosulfonic acid H2N•SO2•OH is a strong inorganic acid obtained from chlorosulfonic acid and ammonia, or by heating urea with fuming sulfuric acid. The latter process is now used on a commercial scale. The acid forms white or colorless non-hygroscopic crystals that are stable when dry but in solution at elevated temperatures it slowly hydrolyzes forming ammonium bisulfate.

A Study Of Aldehyde Derivatives Of Metallic Sulfamates, Edmond A. Morin Jul 1949

A Study Of Aldehyde Derivatives Of Metallic Sulfamates, Edmond A. Morin

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Sulfamic acid at one time had no particular value, and very little was known about the physical and chemical properties of this acid. At the present time , however, this acid is a commercial product of considerable importance and extensive investigation has been conducted to discover its many chemical properties. A very interesting group of compounds derived from sulfamates are the aldehyde addition products. The aldehyde derivatives of calcium sulfamate were studied and had a particular interest because of their greater stability, especially in the isolated, solid form. The aldehyde addition products of calcium studied included benzaldehyde, furfuraldehyde, for aldehyde, …

The Reactions Of Ethyl Acetoacetate With Certain Halogen Derivatives Of Alcohols, Harold E. Sullivan Jul 1949

The Reactions Of Ethyl Acetoacetate With Certain Halogen Derivatives Of Alcohols, Harold E. Sullivan

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Chemical literature records many series of compounds produced by the acetoacetic ester synthesis, but in no instance is combination of the acetoacetic ester with the halogenated alcohols, of which the chlorohydrins are examples, mentioned. The products of these reactions are substituted derivatives of the acetoacetic ester. These products yield, upon hydrolysis, hydroxy-ketones. These acids and ketones may serve as intermediates for synthesizing other compounds. Many compounds which have medicinal value, such as pyrazolones and other ring compounds, may be synthesized from the acetoacetic ester derivatives. This study of the reactions of the acetoacetic ester with certain halogen derivatives of alcohols …

Solid Reactions: The Influence Of Temperature And Concentration, Norman H. Kowert Jul 1949

Solid Reactions: The Influence Of Temperature And Concentration, Norman H. Kowert

Bachelors’ Theses

Reactions are constantly taking place all around us. They are the basis of chemistry. Without reactions, there could be no change, and, therefore, no chemistry. Most reactions can be easily visualized; as, for instance, when two liquids are mixed together, or two gases, or a gas and a liquid. When reactions between these substances take place, we take it as a matter of course. There is another type of reaction, however, which does take place, but which is not easily visualized. This is the reaction between two solid substances. Due in part to the nature of solids, their crystalline form, …

Preparation Of The Phenyl Urethans Of Saturated Aliphatic Liquid Alcohols And A Comparison Of Their Properties With Those Reported In The Literature, Mary Ann Mesoloras Jul 1949

Preparation Of The Phenyl Urethans Of Saturated Aliphatic Liquid Alcohols And A Comparison Of Their Properties With Those Reported In The Literature, Mary Ann Mesoloras

Bachelors’ Theses

An investigation of the phenyl urethans of saturated, aliphatic, liquid alcohols disclosed that there was a great discrepancy in the literature with regard to the melting points of these compounds. It was also found that the preparations of the phenyl urethans were either vague or specific for a few selected alcohols.

The purpose of this thesis was to prepare these derivatives in the laboratory in order to compare the melting points found to those in the literature.

Liquid Potassium Soaps From Coconut And Corn Oils, Jack R. Kaestner Jul 1949

Liquid Potassium Soaps From Coconut And Corn Oils, Jack R. Kaestner

Bachelors’ Theses

My interest in liquid potassium soaps began a number of years ago. At this time I was employed at a company that manufactured various cleaning preparations, one of these being a liquid soap prepared by the interaction of potassium hydroxide and cocoanut oil. It was there that I first became acquainted with techniques and problems encountered in the soap industry.

The above mentioned notes took place during the middle of World War II, and consequently the author became familiar with some of the different fats and oils that were substituted for the then unavailable Philippine coconut oil. All of the …

The Preparation Of Alkyl Chlorobenzoates And Their Application As Alcohol Derivatives, Robert Gudwin Johnson Jun 1949

The Preparation Of Alkyl Chlorobenzoates And Their Application As Alcohol Derivatives, Robert Gudwin Johnson

Bachelors’ Theses

While engaged in the preparation of alcohol derivatives during a course in the characterization of organic compounds, the writer noticed in a chemical catalog that various chlorobenzoyl chlorides are now available commercially. Since many of the present reagents for the preparation of alcohol derivatives are deficient in at least one respect, it seemed to be a worthwhile project to prepare alkyl chlorobenzoates by the ·action of these substituted benzoyl chlorides on alcohols. A study of the physical properties of these chlorobenzoates would then be undertaken to determine the feasibility of using them as alcohol derivatives.

A search of the literature …

The Effect Of Certain Reagents On The Consolute Temperature Of The Phenol And Water System, Donna Louise Bleck Jun 1949

The Effect Of Certain Reagents On The Consolute Temperature Of The Phenol And Water System, Donna Louise Bleck

Bachelors’ Theses

The phenol water system was one of the first of a number of partially miscible liquid systems to be investigated. The mutual solubility has been determined for the pure system at various temperatures and pressures by many investigators.

Particularly interesting is the effect of the addition of a third substance on the mutual solubility of this system.

It is, the purpose of this work to determine the effect of certain previously untried substances on the mutual solubility of phenol and water by investigation of the critical solution temperature before and after their addition. The compounds used have been selected on …

Study Of Ether Soluble Factor From Urine Capable Of Reducing The Viscosity Of Gelatin, Lawrence H. Docta Jun 1949

Study Of Ether Soluble Factor From Urine Capable Of Reducing The Viscosity Of Gelatin, Lawrence H. Docta

Bachelors’ Theses

Leonard Driss reported that urine contained an ether soluble factor capable of reducing the viscosity of a gelatin solution.

This thesis intends to further investigate-this point · and to determine the nature of the viscosity reducing factor. Also, to further investigate the phenomena reported by Driss that male urines obtained soon after emission had a greater amount of this viscosity reducing factor than normal urine.

The Chromatographic Separation Of Gilsonite, Harold Albert Bezzant May 1949

The Chromatographic Separation Of Gilsonite, Harold Albert Bezzant

Theses and Dissertations

Separation of natural hydrocarbon minerals into their constituents non-destructively is a very difficult problem. A non-destructive analysis of the hydrocarbon minerals is essential to their wise utilization. Chromatography represents a non-destructive means of separating adsorbable substances non-destructively with a high degree of purity. The chromatographic separation is based upon the simple principle of the difference in adsorption affinity of compounds for a particular adsorbent. The chromatographic separation of gilsonite was, therefore, undertaken in an effort to prove that the adsorbable compounds of this hydrocarbon mineral could be separated by this simple non-destructive method. The first chromatographic columns of alumina, silica …

An Investigation Of The Dissociation Of Certain Cyclohexane Derivatives Of Aliphatic Acids, Jack Norman Finch May 1949

An Investigation Of The Dissociation Of Certain Cyclohexane Derivatives Of Aliphatic Acids, Jack Norman Finch

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

For years it has been known that certain cyclic derivatives of aliphatic acids show hormone activity as growth regulators for some plants, and popular acceptance and application of the regulators has been remarkably rapid. Two commercially available growth regulating substances are indoleacetic acid and phenylacetic acid. Others also include indolebutyric acid and naphthaleneacetic acids (13). There are also certain phenoxy derivatives of acetic acid such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (commonly called 2,4 D), which have specific destructive effects to growing plants. Many derivatives of phenoxyacetic acid have been prepared, their physical properties determined, and an attempt made to correlate molecular …

The Preparation Of M-Ethylphenol And M-Phenylphenol From Resorcinol, Ronald Kenith Robins May 1949

The Preparation Of M-Ethylphenol And M-Phenylphenol From Resorcinol, Ronald Kenith Robins

Theses and Dissertations

The lack of a convenient method for the synthesis of m-alkylphenols has long been recognized by organic chemists. Within recent years the study of the physiological properties of these compounds and their derivatives, particularly the curare analogues, has caused much more concern to be placed upon a satisfactory method of synthesis. The problem of their synthesis offered an interesting study in synthetic organic chemistry. Both groupd, the alkyl group and the hydroxyl group of a meta-alkylated phenol, direct to the ortho and para positions. This makes it impossible to prepare the m-alkylphenols by the usual procedures employed in the synthesis …

The Electrolytic Deposition Of Uranium From Aqeous Solution Containing Various Percentages Of Organic Reducing Agents, Joseph J. Leben May 1949

The Electrolytic Deposition Of Uranium From Aqeous Solution Containing Various Percentages Of Organic Reducing Agents, Joseph J. Leben

Bachelors’ Theses

Until recently uranium was not a much sought after metal. It had few uses, and it was considered merely as a by-product of radium production. The Second World War and the advent of atomic energy altered the uranium picture completely, so that uranium is now more sought after than gold and other precious metals.

With this demand for uranium there came also a need for a more simple method of isolating the metal. The following work is an attempt at solving this need for a simple and cheap method of producing uranium

The Distribution Coefficient Of Acetic Acid Between Bromobenzene And Water And The Distribution Coefficient Of Acetic Acid Between Cyclohexene And Water, John D. Steppler May 1949

The Distribution Coefficient Of Acetic Acid Between Bromobenzene And Water And The Distribution Coefficient Of Acetic Acid Between Cyclohexene And Water, John D. Steppler

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the purpose of this thesis to give a brief outline of the study of distribution coefficients and to determine the distribution coefficient of acetic acid between water and bromobenzene, and the distribution coefficient of acetic acid between cyclohexene and water. There has been a great deal of work done in distribution ratios. However the research possibilities in this field are very extensive and the work done by the author is but a small part of what can be done in this field.

Polarization And Transition In Commercial Waxes Using Dielectric Constant And Dissipation Factor Data, Lewis B. Mcclellan

Bachelors’ Theses

Many of the commercial waxes are of unknown chemical composition. Those for which the composition has been fairly well established, still contain elements of unknown character. It is the purpose or this thesis to investigate the possibility of gaining knowledge or the composition and configuration or wax molecules from a study of the dielectric constant and dissipation factor.

The first part or the thesis is devoted to the principles of dielectrics and dielectric properties. This is to acquaint the reader with the theory of dielectric phenomena. The second part deals with the experimental work and the method employed in measuring …

Qualitative Reactions Of Chlorine On Titaniferous Slags At Elevated Temperatures Without The Use Of Catalysts, Richard K. Brehm May 1949

Qualitative Reactions Of Chlorine On Titaniferous Slags At Elevated Temperatures Without The Use Of Catalysts, Richard K. Brehm

Bachelors’ Theses

For the past twenty-five centuries man's mastery of nature has been based largely on his ability to produce and work iron into implements, tools, and machines. This has been due to the relatively simple task of converting abundant iron ores to metallic iron. No other common metal has the durability of iron. Aluminum has sometimes been called the second most important structural metal, but its extreme softness, even in its alloys, and low melting point have barred it from heavy duty applications. Pound for pound it is stronger than iron, but its bulk is a disadvantage.

Regardless of its durability …

The Determination Of Hydrogen Numbers Of Various Olefins And Unsaturated Fatty Acids Using A Semi-Micro Hydrogenation Apparatus And To Compare These Numbers To Their Iodine Numbers, Francis J. Romeo Apr 1949

The Determination Of Hydrogen Numbers Of Various Olefins And Unsaturated Fatty Acids Using A Semi-Micro Hydrogenation Apparatus And To Compare These Numbers To Their Iodine Numbers, Francis J. Romeo

Bachelors’ Theses

Many important industrial applications for fatty acids and their derivatives are based on the ability of the unsaturated members of a series to combine with other molecules through the reactivity of their double bonds.

Investigators for quite some time have sought means and methods for determining the number and the position of these double bonds and correlating the results as a means of identification for the unsaturation in fats and oils. Iodine addition to the double bond is employed generally in analytical work as a measure of unsaturation and as a means of separating acids of varying degrees of unsaturation. …
