Inconsistencies And Turnover, Lori A. Strawhun Jan 1990

Inconsistencies And Turnover, Lori A. Strawhun

Theses

In any organization, turnover is inevitable - employees come and employees go. A great deal of research has been devoted to exploring the causes of turnover as well as turnover's costs and benefits. There is much to say about turnover. It is a complicated phenomenon affected by many variables and having many effects itself.

To better- understand turnover, several formulas have been created to quantify this phenomenon in terms of percentages. These formulas are presented and one formula was used to examine a company referred to in this text as "Company X". There is little agreement on how much turnover …

Treasuries, Repertories And Collections In The Production Of Common Goods, Roger A. Lohmann Sep 1989

Treasuries, Repertories And Collections In The Production Of Common Goods, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

What types of resources are involved when members of a voluntary association combine their efforts in pursuit of joint goals or common goods? This paper examines the question from the vantage point of a rational choice theory termed endowment theory. Endowment theory is concerned with the rational allocation of productive surpluses to associations and other voluntary groups in pursuit of identified common goods. At least three distinct types of resource dowries can be identified in the current world of nonprofit associations. Treasuries are endowments of money and market-priced resources. Two other categories of "priceless" resource endowments are also evident among …

Resilience And Survival: Executive Careers In Major California Nonprofit Organizations, Cathie J. Witty Jan 1989

Resilience And Survival: Executive Careers In Major California Nonprofit Organizations, Cathie J. Witty

Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Despite the increasing social involvement of nonprofit organizations in public activity, we really know very little about the education, values and career patterns of the executives who manage this nonprofit sector.

This study begins to address these issues through interviews with fifty executive directors of large California nonprofit organizations. Four types of nonprofit organizations were included in the study. Human service agencies [20] and arts organizations [17] comprise the bulk of the organizations, with foundations [10] and scientific research facilities and museums [3] completing the sample.

The study explores the personal dimensions of mobility, career choices, education and …

A Study Of Nonprofit Boards Of Directors From The Chief Executive Officer's Point Of View, Kathleen Brown Fletcher Jan 1989

A Study Of Nonprofit Boards Of Directors From The Chief Executive Officer's Point Of View, Kathleen Brown Fletcher

Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Little has been written to help executive directors of nonprofit organizations with one of the most important parts of their job: working with their Board of Directors. Previous studies show that board-related behaviors are responsible for the difference between effective executives and their less effective peers and that neither academic nor professional literature adequately addresses the board/executive relationship. Behavioral definitions of a "good board" can be found in books written for board members, but no definition could be found that reflected executives' opinions on what behaviors they value most in the boards with which they must work.

This …

Collaborative Approaches To The Sociopolitical Environment: The Emergence Of Issues Management Alliances, Douglas R. Austrom, Lawrence J. Lad Jan 1989

Collaborative Approaches To The Sociopolitical Environment: The Emergence Of Issues Management Alliances, Douglas R. Austrom, Lawrence J. Lad

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Increasing turbulence in the sociopolitical environment is reshaping the environmental management strategies employed by business and other institutions. New expectations of the role of business in society, changing demographics, critical social problems such as spiraling health care costs, educational reform and child care, and environmental degradation are posing serious challenges to business organizations and society as a whole. Private, public, and independent sector institutions have initiated a wide variety of collaborative, multi-organizational approaches to issues management which we describe as issues management alliances (IMAs). Known by a myriad of labels such as public-private partnerships, innovating organizations, community development corporations, and …

Information Technology In Youth Agencies : A Rural Perspective, Rod Underwood, Barry Sherridan Jan 1989

Information Technology In Youth Agencies : A Rural Perspective, Rod Underwood, Barry Sherridan

Research outputs pre 2011

A survey of rural youth agencies investigated current or projected applications of computer technology to agency management and service delivery. The expectations of agency administrators regarding computer usage by youth workers, the nature of training provided or considered desirable, and identification of issues critical to the applications of computer technology in rural youth: services were studied. Youth agencies generally recognised that computers have the potential to enhance the quality of service provision. The lack of formal training in the use of computers may have serious implications for future developments.

Peace, Or The Problem-Free Interval, Roger A. Lohmann Oct 1988

Peace, Or The Problem-Free Interval, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper argues for wider recognition of general program indicators as evaluative criteria and sets forth four general dimensions of outcome measures that might serve as comparative evaluative indicators for a wide range of programs and services. Pragmatic problem-solving is outlined as a theoretical basis for an approach to such general indicators. The argument for general program indicators of problem presence, frequency, duration and severity is grounded in general problem-solving theory and is part of an evaluative study of a mental health crisis unit. Peace, defined as a problem-free interval, is offered as an example of a general program outcome …
