Economic Foundations For The Competition Policy Implemented By The Eec, J. Patrick Raines Jan 1983

Economic Foundations For The Competition Policy Implemented By The Eec, J. Patrick Raines

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical economic framework for the analysis of the competition policy implemented by the European Economic Community (EEC). The fundamental objective is to demonstrate that the EEC's actual approach to regulating restrictive business practices can be related to a concept of competition that is relevant and adequate for the analysis and explanation of competition policy in the EEC. The thesis is that a strong theoretical relationship can be shown to exist between EEC business regulation and the conceptual parallels in the theories on competition of J.A. Schumpeter and J.M. Clark.

Some aspects of slaughtering were reported to be more bothersome than others. The Behavior Of Confined Calves Raised For Veal: Are These Animals Distressed?, M. Kiley-Worthington

Ethology Collection

The behavior of 12 calves confined in crates was recorded at 1-minute intervals for 12-hour periods. These recordings were made at fortnightly intervals from approximately 2 to 16 weeks of age. In all, 864 hours of observations were recorded.

The activities that were performed and the amount of time spent doing each are outlined. Circadian rhythms were controlled largely by feeding time, although there was a difference between diurnal and nocturnal behavior. Individual calves vaned tn how they adapted to the restricted environment. Individual personality profiles and data on the ontogeny of behavior under these conditions are presented.

Mapping Strategic Management Research, Howard Thomas Jan 1983

Mapping Strategic Management Research, Howard Thomas

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

During the last two decades, in particular, there has developed a substantial body of literature in the fields of strategic management, strategic planning, corporate and business policy, and related topics. This literature owes much to the prior writings of Alfred Chandler [10] and the decades of case writing and research undertaken at Harvard Business School by many learned professors. Indeed, Harvard's tradition of leadership in this field dates from 1914 when it first introduced a course requirement for business policy into the business school program. The term strategic management is of relatively recent origin [49] and is currently the accepted …

Robust Regression: Method And Applications, Vijay Mahajan, Subhash Sharma, Jerry Wind Jan 1983

Robust Regression: Method And Applications, Vijay Mahajan, Subhash Sharma, Jerry Wind

Historical Working Papers

Four approaches to linear robust regression analysis are presented. In the presence of outliers or bad data points in marketing data, these procedures provide formal methods to identify outliers and to reduce their influence on the final estimates of the regression coefficients. Use of these procedures in regression models is considered in two typical marketing applications and superiority of these procedures, as compared to the traditional ordinary least squares procedure, in reducing the effect of influential observations is documented. The paper concludes with suggested guidelines for their use in marketing applications.

Accounting Paradigms And Short-Term Decisions: A Preliminary Study, Michael Van Breda

Historical Working Papers

A survey was conducted of firms that were chosen based on the perception that it would be easiest to observe management and production variables. The Oral Interview As A Predictor Of Academic Performance In A Preservice Law Enforcement Training Program, M. Nicholas Meier Jan 1983

The Oral Interview As A Predictor Of Academic Performance In A Preservice Law Enforcement Training Program, M. Nicholas Meier

Masters Theses

The oral interview is a standard technique used in the selection of police officers and the prediction of their subsequent academy and on the job performance. This study attempted to construct a model that could accurately predict academic performance from oral interview performance in a preservice law enforcement training program. Previous research in the use of the oral interview as a predictor of academic performance has produced conflicting results.

The sample in this study consisted of 159 candidates accepted by an oral interview board for training in a preservice police academy. Average academic performance was correlated to scores on an …

Controlling Market Variability By The Restructuring Of The Investment Portfolio, Dennis G. Welker Jan 1983

Controlling Market Variability By The Restructuring Of The Investment Portfolio, Dennis G. Welker

Theses

The major concern in a financial transaction is to maximize profit while minimizing the possibilities of capital loss . The first step necessary to obtain either of these goals is to enhance the financial investor's knowledge of the industry and specific company's history, prospects, and management intentions for the future. Secondly, the present and future economic conditions should be analyzed and their effect on how the respective investment reacts in these types of environments should be determined. After this knowledge has been obtained the investor may have enough supportive information to quantify the components of risk and make his investment …

Motivation, Management Motivation, And Its Perceived Decline In American Bureaucratic Organizations In The Context Of Changing Attitudes And Values, Jon Lawrence Johnson Jan 1983

Motivation, Management Motivation, And Its Perceived Decline In American Bureaucratic Organizations In The Context Of Changing Attitudes And Values, Jon Lawrence Johnson

Theses

This Culminating Project represents an inquiry into the existence, applications, and parameters of human motivation and its impact on perceived management attitudes, values, and motivation to manage.

The topic is examined from three vantage points. Part I embodies a selective indoctrination in human motivation concepts and suggests relevant organizational applications and examples in illustration. The term "motivation" has evolved into a popular but often misapplied catch phrase. Therefore, a foundation in prominent human motivation theory is provided as precedent to issues subsequently discussed in the Project, to offer the reader an accurate base of subject knowledge.

Part II addresses the …

Can The Free Enterprise System Survive In An Ethically Schizophrenic Culture?, Richard C. Chewning Jan 1983

Can The Free Enterprise System Survive In An Ethically Schizophrenic Culture?, Richard C. Chewning

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The stock market remained on a virtual plateau from 1968 until 1983—hardly a sign of vigorous national health. Our long-term decline in productivity indicates economic anemia. The national debt continues to soar even when a President espouses fiscal conservatism and Congress passes the largest single tax increase in its history. There are also many social and political problems: decay in our inner cities; rising crime; environmental concerns; and many international crises. Under these pressures the culture is beginning to manifest some neurotic characteristics as it develops many negative attitudes. There is a growing sense of nonspecific guilt. We seem uneasy. …

Social Desirability Response Effects: Three Alternative Models, Daniel C. Ganster, Harry W. Hennessey, Fred Luthans Jan 1983

Social Desirability Response Effects: Three Alternative Models, Daniel C. Ganster, Harry W. Hennessey, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Three models are developed for the effects of social desirability (SD) on organizational behavior research results. SD can act as (a) an unmeasured variable that produces spurious correlations between study variables, (b) a suppressor variable that hides relationships, or (c) a moderator variable that conditions the relationship between two other variable.
