Farm Management Memo - Advice To Help Farming Through The Rural Downturn, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

Historically, commodity prices cycle between a "boom and a bust" every few years. Farmers are often able to adjust their operations to reduce the impact of a downturn in commodity prices by:

  • Increasing efficiency through reducing or maintaining input costs while maintaining or increasing production levels.

  • Maximising returns through seeking price premiums on commodities (protein, noodle quality, finer wool, increased clean wool yield).

  • Reducing overhead costs

  • Seeking cheaper finance or refinancing costly loans

  • Careful planning and management with a high degree of attention to detail.

  • Seeking advice

Bulletin No 4187 - Choosing Commercial Beef Bulls, David Barker Jun 1990

Bulletin No 4187 - Choosing Commercial Beef Bulls, David Barker

Bulletins 4000 -

This bulletin provides a method of placing realistic differences in value on young bulls offered for sale.

The prices paid for young bulls are often based on superficial appearance alone, and this has important financial implications for the purchaser. Different characteristics have either large or small effects on the net value of progeny produced. They are dependent on such factors as: the variability of different characteristics in cattle; differences in reliability of the assessment; the extent to which the characteristic is passed on to the progeny; the effect of the characteristic on realized net value of the progeny; the effect …

The Role Of Multinational Corporations In Nigeria : A Case Study, Eteng Bassey Eno May 1990

The Role Of Multinational Corporations In Nigeria : A Case Study, Eteng Bassey Eno

Theses

Multinational corporations in Nigeria are as old as Nigeria itself. This section has been recognized as an important area of economic activity which is capable of having both positive as well as negative economic implications regarding employment, technology transfer, international capital investments and other sociocultural issues in Nigeria. In Nigeria multinationals corporations (MNC) have virtually dominated such industries as cement, beer brewing, tobacco products, soap and cosmetics, chemicals, pharmaceutical, machinery, electric equipment and assembly activities ie. motor vehicle and bicycle. However, much as the host country is aware of the inherent danger posed by direct investment by transnational corporations, the …

Women And Philanthropy: New Voices, New Visions, Marcy Murninghan Mar 1990

Women And Philanthropy: New Voices, New Visions, Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article examines the growing presence and influence of women in American contemporary philanthropy. Based in part upon structured interviews conducted with leaders in the women's funding movement, it identifies how the voices and visions of women — within older, more traditional foundations as well as newer "women's funds" — are having an impact on the way the needs of human community are met. It also sheds light on how these voices and visions serve to reconceive the connections among morality, money, and power, thereby contributing to an understanding of economic morality.

The Role Of African Women In Informal Industry : A Case Study, Ayorkor Eulalie Deganus Jan 1990

The Role Of African Women In Informal Industry : A Case Study, Ayorkor Eulalie Deganus

Theses

The informal industrial sector has in recent years been recognized by development agencies as an important area of economic activity which is capable of creating employment opportunities. This sector is also growing faster than its formal counterpart.

In developing countries, women dominate the informal sector by virtue of their traditional and unique roles in food processing, pottery and* basketry, alcholic beverage brewing, handicrafts, clothweaving, cosmetic manufacturing and a host of manufacturing activities. However due to a general misconception about the actual economic roles of women in society, very little attempt is made by development planners and agencies to improve their …

Toward A Generic Taxonomy Of The Not-For-Profits, Not-For-Profit Managers, And Not-For-Profit Managerial Functions, Arnold Reisman Jan 1990

Toward A Generic Taxonomy Of The Not-For-Profits, Not-For-Profit Managers, And Not-For-Profit Managerial Functions, Arnold Reisman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The not-for-profit sector encompasses a diverse range of organizations, from large entities like the American Red Cross to small neighborhood associations, collectively representing the third largest economic sector and employing as many civilians as the federal government and all 50 states combined. This sector, influenced by privatization trends under the Reagan administration, necessitates a deeper understanding of the roles and functions of its managers. Existing literature highlights the importance of systematic taxonomies for classifying the functions, structures, and characteristics of nonprofit organizations. These frameworks assist educators, policymakers, and practitioners in comprehensively analyzing the sector, from identifying operational profiles to refining …

Characteristics Of College Student Volunteering, Ronald W. Fagan

Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management

The focus of this paper is on college students and their attitudes, values, and activities, including altruism and volunteering. College students from a southwestern liberal arts university were sampled. We found that the students repeatedly stressed traditional, moralistic, and altruistic attitudes and values. We found relatively high levels of volunteering. We also found that students placed significant limits on their volunteering.
