The Role Of Agro-Industries In Promoting A Food Culture In Nigeria, M. O. Ojo Dec 1991

The Role Of Agro-Industries In Promoting A Food Culture In Nigeria, M. O. Ojo

Economic and Financial Review

The paper discusses in a general way the role of agro-industries in the promotion of a Nigerian food culture. It observes that the agro-industrial and trade policies pursued in the 1970s and early 1980s contributed immensely to a food habit characterised l1y preference for foreign and imported foods. Agro-industries in the present economic environment can contribute positively to the development of a Nigerian food culture through corporate promotions, investments in the production of local foodstuffs and funding of relevant research and development. The paper concludes that agro-industries should be supported in the development of an indigenous food culture by fostering …

Thispaper focuses on the nature of this debate as it has emerged over the last decade and addresses, among other things, the legacy of the 1960s, the rise of the fitness movement, the …

A Review Of The Federal Government Fertilizer Subsidy Scheme In Nigeria, Grace O. Evbuomwan Sep 1991

A Review Of The Federal Government Fertilizer Subsidy Scheme In Nigeria, Grace O. Evbuomwan

Economic and Financial Review

This paper reviews the fertilizer subsidy scheme in Nigeria. Using descriptive statistics and econometric methods, the study shows that farmers' access to fertilizer has improved since the commencement of the subsidy scheme in 1976 and the direct involvement of the Federal Government in the procurement and distribution of the input. This also coincided with the period when remarkable improvements were recorded in the yield of virtually all the major crops, especially staples. The econometric analysis confirms that a positive correlation exists between fertilizer supply/consumption and output, while the level of subsidy on the input influences its consumption (utilization) and tends …

Stockless Medical Materials Management: Applications For The United States Air Force Medical Service, Thomas M. Harkenrider

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to study stockless materials management in an effort to determine if it could improve the Air Force Medical Service's supply operations. The main result of this study was a decision support system (DSS) that would evaluate potential savings if stockless materials management were implemented in an Air Force medical treatment facility (MTF). In the process of developing the DSS, stockless materials management was studied in civilian hospitals that had previously converted to stockless materials management. Data included facility bed size, annual medical supply purchases, pre and post stockless medical supply full time equivalents (FTEs), …

Miscellaneous Publication 28/91 - Midas (Model Of An Integrated Dryland Agricultural System), David J. Pannell, Andrew Bathgate

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

MIDAS is a bioeconomic model of mixed crop/livestock farms in Western Australia. It selects farm management strategies which maximise profit subject to resource, technical and environmental constraints using the linear programming technique. This document provides a thorough documentation of the version of MIDAS developed for the "eastern wheatbelt" region. If you are learning to use MIDAS with the MARG menu driven system, you need to read the MARG manual as well as this documentation.

From early in the life of MIDAS, we gave a high priority to making the data and assumptions readily accessible in documentation and in microcomputer spreadsheet …

Discovery Of Selected Water Dispensers By Newborn Pigs, P. A. Phillips, D. Fraser Mar 1991

Discovery Of Selected Water Dispensers By Newborn Pigs, P. A. Phillips, D. Fraser

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

Newborn pigs in 86 litters were offered drinking water from four types of dispenser to determine how quickly each design would be discovered. On average piglets discovered water within about 24 h from an exposed water surface (bowl or cup), whereas discovery time was delayed to more than 72 h with nipple or push-lever dispensers. A prototype dispenser with a wide bowl and continuous bubbling action reduced (P < 0.05) average discovery time to about 14 h.

Bulletin No 4189 - Training And Care Of The Sheep-Dog, John Charlick, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Mar 1991

Bulletin No 4189 - Training And Care Of The Sheep-Dog, John Charlick, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

A well trained sheep-dog is a considerable asset to a farmer — in a recent Queensland Department of Primary Industries study, participating graziers estimated the value of a good working dog to be up to $20,000 a year.

Despite their value, dogs can be maintained cheaply. The Queensland study quoted $130 a year as the most any grazier spent on an individual dog — for dry food, vaccine and treatments for internal and external parasites.

This Bulletin aims to show how to train a sheep-dog from a raw pup to a highly useful and well trained, mature dog. The methods …

Are Acquisitions A Poison Pill For Innovation?, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, R. Duane Ireland, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

The recent wave of acquisition activity may be damaging the innovative capabilities of American firms, thus making them less competitive in the global marketplace. In fact, acquisitions often serve as a substitute for innovation, which may cause further neglect of internal research and development (R&D) programs. Additionally, acquisitions often lead to increases in leverage, diversification, and absorb significant amounts of executive time, which may lead to reduced managerial commitment to innovation.

In this article, evidence is presented suggesting that acquisition activity may result in reductions in R&D inputs and outputs. On average, the 191 firms in the sample reduced their …
