The Effects Of Political Instability On Economic Growth: A Case For Sub-Saharan Africa, Gregory Wayne Willis Jan 1990

The Effects Of Political Instability On Economic Growth: A Case For Sub-Saharan Africa, Gregory Wayne Willis

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The countries of Sub-Saharan Africa have experienced both poor economic performance and substantial political instability since their independence. There have been numerous studies investigating the possible relationship between political instability and economic growth. The common approach to investigating this relationship is to measure the effect of economic growth on the probability of political instability. This paper takes the opposite approach by investigating the effects of political instability on economic growth. We believe that political instability disrupts the economic system causing a reduction in growth. We measure this effect using regression analysis to estimate two models we have developed. The first …

The Benefits And Detriments Of Beer: Health And Economic Impact, James M. Rice Jan 1990

The Benefits And Detriments Of Beer: Health And Economic Impact, James M. Rice

Theses

This thesis will focus on studies which have been conducted showing both the benefits and detriments of beer to health. Further, illegal drugs and beer will be compared, regarding economic impact and effect on users.

In recent years, the beer industry has been attacked by the media and other elements of society. It is considered a detriment to health by some. The negative media attention in recent years has given the beer industry and its products a bad image. Further, in the last 24 months, efforts have been made by supporters of the anti-alcohol movement to equate beer with illegal …

Assessment Of Integration In R & D / Marketing Interface Conditions In The New Product Development Process, Pamela A. Hoffman Jan 1990

Assessment Of Integration In R & D / Marketing Interface Conditions In The New Product Development Process, Pamela A. Hoffman

Theses

This thesis will focus on the relationship between the Research and Development (R&D) and marketing functions as they relate to the new product development process in a corporate setting.

New product development processes are a complex and dynamic series of activities which require a transition in the organization from a hierarchical structure to a colleague-based, horizontal structure. Cross-departmental teams and project management methods lead to shared responsibilities for new products among R&D, manufacturing, and marketing groups.

Research has established that communication problems, goal conflicts, and a lack of openness often characterize the relationship between R&D and marketing. Research has also …

Believability And Attitudes Toward Alcohol Warning Label Information: The Role Of Persuasive Communications Theory, J. Craig Andrews, Richard G. Netemeyer, Srinivas Durvasula Jan 1990

Believability And Attitudes Toward Alcohol Warning Label Information: The Role Of Persuasive Communications Theory, J. Craig Andrews, Richard G. Netemeyer, Srinivas Durvasula

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Based on tenets of persuasive communications theory, five recently proposed alcohol warning labels are examined for their differential impact on label believability and attitudes. While all warnings are rated as believable, the ones regarding birth defects and driving impairment are perceived to be significantly more believable than the others. In addition, persons with more favorable attitudes toward alcohol consumption tend to disbelieve specific instance hazards (e.g., birth defects, driving impairment and drug combination warnings), while disliking longterm risks of alcohol consumption and abuse (e.g., hypertension, liver disease, cancer and addiction warnings). Implications for public policy and researchers are discussed.

Lethargy And Low Water Intake By Sows During Early Lactation: A Cause Of Low Piglet Weight Gains And Survival?, David Fraser, P. A. Phillips Aug 1989

Lethargy And Low Water Intake By Sows During Early Lactation: A Cause Of Low Piglet Weight Gains And Survival?, David Fraser, P. A. Phillips

Farm Animal Husbandry Collection

Daily water intake was monitored for 40 sows during 5 days before and 14 days after farrowing. Intake averaged 9-12 l day‒1 before farrowing, dropped to a mean of 6 l on the day of farrowing and increased gradually over 4 days to a plateau of ~14 l day‒1. Sows varied greatly in the degree of reduction in intake during the day of farrowing and the first 3 days of lactation, and those sows with low water intake on these days had low average weight gains by the piglets in the same period. Most of the piglet …

A Dss For Animal Nutrition Planning, Krishna Prasad, M R Gopalan, S Sridhar

IIMB Management Review

In recent years, after the much acclaimed success of the Green
Revolution, the nation’s planners are coming to realize that it is not adequate for
the nation to have enough to eat, it is also important to have quality food. There
has, therefore, recently been a new emphasis on industries such as dairy and
poultry. It has been realized that there is a need to harness India’s enormous
animal resources. (There are, by one estimate, some 480 million livestock in the
country, including about 230 million cattle and 136 million poultry). Significant
improvements in the productivity of livestock can be …

Data on the handweaving program at the Quicksand Craft Center in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky were compiled and analyzed. Four areas--history of the craft program, business organization and financial structure, weave patterns of goods woven and sold by the craft center, and weavers employed in the program --were examined to assess the success of the program in the local community. Factors in the four areas examined contributed to the success of the program. The benevolence, perseverance, and co-operation of the founders, directors and community members involved with the craft center have been largely responsible for the continued success …

Increasing Profit On Dairy Farms, G R. Olney, Warren Standing Jan 1989

Increasing Profit On Dairy Farms, G R. Olney, Warren Standing

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Farmers continually make decisions on all aspects of their farms that influence profit. For dairy farmers these include the number of cows, calving pattern, level and type of supplementary feeding, area of each pasture type and fodder crop, and the areas for hay or silage, or both. The extent and type of the beef sideline operations also influence the overall profitability of the farm.

The WesternAustralian Dairy Farm Model (WADFM) is a whole farm model developed by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture to help farmers maximise profits by considering all effects of such decisions on the farm.
