Resource Requirements For Scheduling With Different Processor Sizes - Part I, Venkateswara Reddy Dondeti, Hamilton Emmons Jun 1986

Resource Requirements For Scheduling With Different Processor Sizes - Part I, Venkateswara Reddy Dondeti, Hamilton Emmons

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Given a start time sj, duration pj, and the minimal processor capacity required rj, for each of n jobs (j=1,...,n), we wish to find the optimal mix of processors, available in two different sizes, required to complete all jobs on schedule. A job with a smaller size requirement can be done by a bigger processor, but not vice versa. We present algorithms for solving this problem under two different objectives: (a) Minimize the total number of processors, and, given that, minimize the number of bigger processors: (b) Minimize the total costs of the processors.

An Inventory Model For The Specialty Chemical Industry, Paul Murchison May 1986

An Inventory Model For The Specialty Chemical Industry, Paul Murchison

Theses

The specialty chemical industry is a unique segment of the chemical industry. This industry produces chemical intermediate products for the pharmaceutical, agricultural, cosmetics, and other chemically related industries. Most of the products that are produced are covered by patents or involve proprietary know—how. The specialty chemical products are a minor part of a total formulation but contribute unique properties to the end product. This feature of specialty chemicals gives the manufacturer unusual pricing power compared to producers of commodity chemicals. This industry has proven to be very competitive, profitable and in the forefront of the present automation revolution over the …

Cybernetic Theory Applied In Production Control, Ding-Hsin Fang May 1986

Cybernetic Theory Applied In Production Control, Ding-Hsin Fang

Theses

There are many theories for the control of production. Also. there are many successful cases for each of the different theories.

Cybernetic theory is quickly evolving as a design basis for management control systems. Cybernetics is the science of self-regulation and its basic tenents are control, or the ability to direct action toward a predetermined goal, and communication, or the ability to send and receive information.

The objective of this thesis is to identify and discuss this theory applied to the management techniques of production control for a Far Eastern textile firm and to investigate the extent that the firm …

Minimal Resources For Fixed Job Schedules With Defferent Processor Size Requirements And A Hierarchical Structure, Venkateswara Reddy Dondeti May 1986

Minimal Resources For Fixed Job Schedules With Defferent Processor Size Requirements And A Hierarchical Structure, Venkateswara Reddy Dondeti

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

In resource allocation and scheduling problems, we frequently come across situations wherein the tasks, although similar in nature, require resources of different capacities. An example is the assignment of airplanes to different flights. In this case, the basic task is the same, but depending on the expected load of a flight, we would assign a plane of larger or smaller capacity to that flight. The essential feature of this type of problem is that not only the tasks require resources of different capacities, but also a resource with a higher capacity can, if necessary, undertake a task which requires a …

Leading The Electronics Industry Into Total Automation, George P. Rossi May 1986

Leading The Electronics Industry Into Total Automation, George P. Rossi

Theses

The introduction of an automated PCB facility in today's technological society still includes a people-oriented facility. The main thrust should be to develop Artificial Intelligence, then the incorporation of LANS, CAD, ICAM, and CIM.

The ability to lace all the functions together is by far the biggest obstacle. The hardware of the equipment is not so much the obstacle to the chemical process and knowledge as the software. Software, which is the capability to talk from the computer to the equipment, is the greatest stumbling block because there is no standardization in the language format.

The method which a computer …

Inferential Operations Research On Surface Finish Of Castings, D. C. Ekey Jan 1986

Inferential Operations Research On Surface Finish Of Castings, D. C. Ekey

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

This paper reports the result of an experiment using statistical research methodology to evaluate previous findings, identify new effects and focus on potential future research efforts to improve the control of casting surface roughness.

The objective of developing a functional equation to predict casting surface roughness was achieved. A reliable and valid methodology for obtaining operational "surface imprints" of casting surface roughness was developed.

Gray iron castings within a weight range of 1 to 7000 pounds were studied. The population of 142 surface roughness measurements came from five foundries in the northeast regions of Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts. The …

Many Faces Of Luca Pacioli: Iconographic Research Over Thirty Years, Ernest Stevelinck Jan 1986

Many Faces Of Luca Pacioli: Iconographic Research Over Thirty Years, Ernest Stevelinck

Accounting Historians Journal

This article, first delivered as a paper at the 1980 World Congress of Accounting Historians in London,1 presents the results of three decades of the author's research in pursuit of a true image of Luca Pacioli. Portraits, sculptures, and sketches are traced to painters and artists of several periods. The mystery relating to Pacioli's likeness is considered. Stevelinck suggests that the search for a true portrait continues, given the disputes over the authenticity of various paintings and their faithfulness in representing the appearance of Pacioli. The research also provides important information about the career of Pacioli by considering the relationships …
