A Note On Equivalence In Ranking Investments, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1986

A Note On Equivalence In Ranking Investments, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Present net worth, benefit/cost, and internal rate of return are considered for ranking investments. In some cases, rankings can be contradictory, and the investment criterion can influence inter-project allocations. There are situations, however, when ranking equivalence is assured. In this article, conditions for equivalence in ranking investments are presented using simple graphics and algebra. The conditions are restrictive, and can be effective in demonstrating the need for discretion in selecting an economic criterion for evaluating investments.

Global Competition For Environmental Markets - The Case Of The Water-Pollution Control Equipment Industry, Andrew C. Gross Jan 1986

Global Competition For Environmental Markets - The Case Of The Water-Pollution Control Equipment Industry, Andrew C. Gross

Marketing

Describes how pollution control spending around the world is set to increase from $70 billion (1979) to $115 billion in 1990 in real terms. Expands on the theory that cleaning up - or preventing mistakes - in the environment makes for financial and healthwise good sense. Posits that cleaner air leads to fewer respiratory problems and cleaner water in most areas of manufacturing results in lower fuel use. Focuses on trade, end use competitive modes and marketing patterns regarding water pollution control equipment (WPCE). States that WPCE shipments world wide are projected to rise from $3.3 billion in 1979 to …

Selecting Joint Venture Partners Is Easy ... Almost, J. Michael Geringer Jan 1986

Selecting Joint Venture Partners Is Easy ... Almost, J. Michael Geringer

Historical Working Papers

Interviews with over 100 executives previously involved in joint ventures were used to study the criteria and outcomes of partnering. The study suggests that successful joint ventures depend on more than complementary resources and require committment to the venture's objectives beyond the short term. Consideration of management styles, strategies, and culture should be part of the venture formation process.

The Alternate Incentive To Early Teacher Retirement, Vernon Dean Guinn Jan 1986

The Alternate Incentive To Early Teacher Retirement, Vernon Dean Guinn

Masters Theses

The major emphasis of the study was to formulate an answer to the question being asked by the study group under the Illinois Project for School Reform, "How to improve the quality of teachers within the school system?" Specifically, this study analyzed the results of a study done by the Planning and Research Department of the State Board of Education, prepared in April 1977. Under this study's proposal, four areas of substantial disincentives were identified as reasons for teachers not taking early retirement. The age discrimination effect has since been overcome with early retirement incentives now being offered in many …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Perceptions Of The Successful Woman In Management, John P. Gavin Jan 1986

An Empirical Investigation Of The Perceptions Of The Successful Woman In Management, John P. Gavin

Master's Theses

This research paper is an empirical study of the perceptual differences of male management and the female professional employee population at Philip Morris U.S.A. Operations. The female professional employee population has been further categorized into two groups, "successful" (grade 10 and above) and all other exempt females (those who have yet to attain the stated level to be considered successful).

The perceptual differences between the three groups was determined by responses to a survey administered to a statistically valid representative sample of the male management and female populations (2).

The data from the survey was examined for significant differences from …

A Sequential Linear Programming Approach For Solving The Linear Complementarity Problem, Syamal Roy Jan 1986

A Sequential Linear Programming Approach For Solving The Linear Complementarity Problem, Syamal Roy

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This research is concerned with the linear complementarity problem (LCP). In the first part of this research, we develop an algorithm which finds a solution to the LCP or detects that none exists when the given matrix M is either a P-matrix, or M is nonsingular and its inverse is nonpositive. Our approach is to solve an equivalent constrained optimization problem, the feasible region of which is the same as that defined by the linearity constraints of the LCP. The algorithm starts with a solution to the linearity constraints, if one exists, and solves a sequence of linear programming subproblems. …

Decision Support System For Capacity Planning And Operational Design, Mahesh Chandra Pati Jan 1986

Decision Support System For Capacity Planning And Operational Design, Mahesh Chandra Pati

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The purpose of this dissertation was to provide a decision support system to address the capacity planning and operational design issues of a multi-product, multi-family, multi-stage serial flow production line. The existing algorithms find production schedules either for a single-product case or for a multi-product, single-family manufacturing system of only one stage. The latter problem is an NP-complete problem. The model developed in this thesis is called the Manufacturing Analysis System (MAS). MAS determines a feasible schedule that will minimize the total setup and inventory holding costs, which should be close to the optimal schedule. The Extended Basic Period (EBP) …

A Study Of Nonferrous Casting Surface Finish Using Statistical Theory And Computer Technology, D. C. Ekey Jan 1986

A Study Of Nonferrous Casting Surface Finish Using Statistical Theory And Computer Technology, D. C. Ekey

This research is based on statistical research methodology to evaluate variation in casting surface finish in nonferrous production operations.

The Data Base of 82 cast surface finish measurements were produced in three U.S. foundries. The data base is comprised of two sub-groups. One data sub-group has a sample size of 58 aluminum cast surfaces. The second data sub-group consists of 24 cast bronze surface finishes.

The research is a continuation of preceding research with Gray Iron Castings. A macro operational level, rather than a micro laboratory level is used. The results substantiate the primary objective to help improve casting quality …

Combining The Learning Curve Concept With Economic Lot Sizing, James C. Goodwin Jr., Jack S. Goodwin Jan 1986

Combining The Learning Curve Concept With Economic Lot Sizing, James C. Goodwin Jr., Jack S. Goodwin

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Simple concepts familiar to most operations management students are frequently not integrated as a result of the complexity generated by their combination. This expository note demonstrates a method for combining the economic lot size concept with the learning curve and using a simple computer algorithm for solution purposes. It avoids the traditional trade-off of reality and accuracy for expediency.

Satellite Remote Sensing And Fisheries Applications, Holly M. Turton Jan 1986

Satellite Remote Sensing And Fisheries Applications, Holly M. Turton

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Satellite remote sensing has the capacity to aid the three major components of a fishery: research, management, and the fishing industry. An evaluation of the potential of satellite-derived data to the fishery is based upon six case studies which are presented as evidence of the capabilities of satellite-borne sensors. Peripheral applications pertaining to the marine environment and possible applications for the future are reviewed. Three basic categories of remote sensing programs related to the fishery are defined: one to test the applicability of the technology to the field of fisheries; another to employ the technology to fisheries research; and a …

Discrimination In The Assessment Process: The Role Of Professional Appraisal, Christopher G. Sansone Jan 1986

Discrimination In The Assessment Process: The Role Of Professional Appraisal, Christopher G. Sansone

Theses

The thesis Discrimination in the Assessment Process: The Role of Professional Appraisal by Christopher G. Sansone explores the complexities of property tax assessment and how disparities in appraisal practices contribute to inequities. It argues that many citizens lack an understanding of property taxation, making them vulnerable to unfair assessments. The study examines the historical evolution of property taxation, including taxpayer revolts that have shaped modern assessment policies. It highlights issues such as assessment discrimination against lower-income property owners, political influences on the appraisal process, and the impact of legislative and judicial decisions.

A key argument is that professional real estate …

Mathematical Programming Model Of Western Australian Dairy Farms, G R. Olney, D A. Falconer Nov 1985

Mathematical Programming Model Of Western Australian Dairy Farms, G R. Olney, D A. Falconer

Animal production and livestock research reports

A profit maximising mathematical programming dairy farm model has been developed which determines the most profitable management strategies for the full year. This model was initially an extension of the one used in the Western Australian Dairy Feed Management Service (DFMS) which determines the most profitable ration to feed for a specific period, the milk yield per cow and the number of cows to milk. The DFMS is useful for formulating a ration for a specific period, particularly during summer on non-irrigated farms in Western Australia when complete hand feeding is required, but it cannot be used to determine optimum …
